So no Mortal Kombat 12 then?
Fighting game fans have been eagerly waiting to see NetherRealm Studios’ next title that’ll follow up Mortal Kombat 11 for over a year now and looks like they know what the project won’t be.
Mortal Kombat Co-creator Ed Boon recently shared a message to fans regarding the next NRS game announcement and how it won’t be connected to MK’s 30th anniversary this year.
“PSA/FYI We know a lot of you are excited about the next NRS game announcement & it will happen in due time,” wrote Boon on Twitter. “But first [it’s] all about 30 years of Mortal Kombat. That’s what we’re going to celebrate and focus on. Our next game announcement will be separate from MK30 ❤️.”
There’s certainly some interesting phrasing used in that statement, but what does he really mean by all of that?
Our immediate reaction was that sounds like Mortal Kombat 12 won’t be the next NRS game because why would you announce it and not tie it in with the big anniversary?

Some may also read into this that means some sort of Mortal Kombat anniversary collection is off the table too, but we don’t see that necessarily being the case.
If Warner Bros. is planning to drop a new compilation at some point, NRS almost assuredly wouldn’t be the ones making it, so that doesn’t really have anything to do with their next project technically.
Over the past decade or so there have been multiple attempts to get a remake or remaster of the classic MK titles off the ground, but only managed to see release
His mention of focusing on the anniversary is intriguing as well considering there hasn’t been any actual game content released to celebrate the event.
While there’s plenty of rumors swirling around about what NeatherRealm is working on (whether that be MK12, Injustice 3, a Marvel fighting game or something else), the only concrete information we have is that the answer is apparently multiple of those choices.
Ed Boon also recently held a brief AMA session on Twitter where he obviously was asked a bunch of questions regarding the next game, and the creative director of the studio confirmed they are actually making more than 1 project right now.
Whatever is coming down the pipeline next, they should be approaching the time to reveal it to the world somewhat soon although the earliest we’ll be getting a peek is probably December at The Game Awards.
