  • Napoli turn focus to other Manchester United star

Over recent times, Napoli have shown a great interest in Manchester United, targeting many of their stars over the last year.

In the summer The Azzurri signed Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay who is in great form, establishing himself in the Italian squad.

With six goals and four assists in 22 games, edging close to his career best of 10 goals and three assists in 43 games last season.

However, since the summer, Napoli haven’t stopped looking at the talent at Old Trafford, spending most of the winter transfer window targeting Alejandro Garnacho.

Antonio Conte wanted the Argentine as a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who moved to PSG, however, refused to submit an offer higher than £42 million.

Ultimately, the deal fell apart with United wanting between £60 million and £70 million for the Puskas Award winner.

Now, the Italian side are looking to The Red Devils once more, but this time for Joshua Zirkzee.

Napoli look to move for Joshua Zirkzee

Corriere dello Sport, as reported by Daily Sports, has reported that Napoli are now looking at signing Zirkzee with the money they’ve received for Kvaratskhelia and what they hope to get for Victor Osimhen in the summer.

PSG signed the Georgian winger for £60 million, with the Italian club hoping to get a similar amount for Osimhen who is currently on loan with Galatasaray.

If they manager to sell their unwanted striker, the new plan is reported as targeting Zirkzee, who is proven in Serie A with Bologna, and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Georgiy Sudakov.

Naturally with the rest of the season still to go, a lot can change between the winter market closing and the summer window opening, however Juventus have also had a keen eye on Zirkzee, making a return to Italy even more of a potential.

  • Oliseh weighs in on Haaland vs. Isak debate—picks his favourite

Former Super Eagles Head coach Sunday Oliseh, has joined the debate on who is the better striker between Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak.

Both players are crucial to their clubs and have impressive goal-scoring records in the English Premier League. While Haaland has already won two Golden Boots, Isak is yet to claim one but remains a strong contender this season.

“Depends on the kind of football you want to play or club that you are! Isak, in my opinion, is a more complete all-around striker.

He is constantly in motion across the pitch, has an exceptional first touch, is great in 1v1s, and brings his entire team into play. I overwhelmingly prefer Isak… but then, what do I know?”

The competition for the Premier League Golden Boot is heating up. Mohamed Salah leads the charts with 21 goals, while Haaland (19) and Isak (17) remain close behind.

Sunday Oliseh, has joined the debate on who is the better striker between Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak.

  • Five things we learnt from Man Utd 2 vs 1 Leicester City

    Getty Images: Gareth Copley

    Phew, that was intense.

After an exhaustingly turgid first half, Man Utd with the help of Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee, overturned a 1-0 lead to qualify for the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Without a further due, here are five things we learnt from Man Utd vs Leicester City:

    1) Alejandro Garnacho changes the game

For the umpteenth time under Ruben Amorim, Man Utd struggled to break down a team. In the first half, Ruud van Nistelrooy got his game plan right and Utd couldn’t find gaps again.

Alejandro Garnacho’s impact as a substitute, not for the first time changed the course of the game. Simply by getting the ball wide to the Argentinian and have him running at James Justin gave the attack penetration.

    2) An awful first half, a better second

Eerily similar to the Southampton victory, Man Utd were worryingly bad, they eventually changed the game in the second half, but Ruben Amorim has to figure out why Utd lack so much insurgency and need the fear of failure to turn the game around.

Credit to Utd for keeping going and turning it around, but we’ve seen the first half performance far too many times.

CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE CENTRE DEVILS WHATSAPP GROUP CHAT NOW!

    3) Not enough movement in attack

It feels as though the players are in the right position in Amorim’s 3-4-3, what we aren’t seeing enough of is any manipulation of space in attack. Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo started either side of the striker, but a huge problem was the little movement from both players.

This system requires runs in the half-space and wide from the full-backs and the attackers either side of the striker, the lethargy is far too much from the front line.

    4) Zirkzee and Hojlund Assessment

Both the young strikers have the burden of being Man Utd’s lead striker early in their careers, at the moment Josh Zirkzee off the bench is at least having somewhat of an impact.

For Rasmus Hojlund the ball doesn’t stick, he wrestles too much with the defenders and his confidence is seemingly stagnating.

Zirkzee’s link-up play, hold-up and general game awareness makes the team a little more fluent in attack. Hojlund is possibly being asked to do things he doesn’t excel at, but at this point either his role in the team needs to change or he must stop being so physical with defenders, as it stunts United’s penetration overall.

    5) Amorim still justifiably chopping and changing

It feels like there are glimpses of good performances of a player in a certain position e.g. Kobbie Mainoo in right attacking forward role in the Europa League. Once it’s given more time to develop, it doesn’t work and Amorim has to change again.

At the moment, Man Utd haven’t settled on wing-backs that work (that could change with Patrick Dorgu signed) or on the forwards that work.

It doesn’t help that Man Utd keep conceding first then need to change games. But with more time on the training ground coming up with a bit of a breather in the schedule, more time on the training ground can help Amorim figure out what a settled side is and hopefully inject more pace with and without the ball.

  • Flamingos set for intense U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifier against South Africa

Nigeria’s Flamingos are set to begin their preparatory camp on Sunday at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne-Remo. The two-time World Cup semi-finalists will face South Africa’s Bantwana in a crucial two-legged qualifier for a ticket to Morocco 2025.

The Flamingos, who secured a historic bronze medal at the 2022 edition in India, advanced to the second round of the African qualifiers without kicking a ball. In contrast, South Africa delivered a brutal statement, obliterating Gabon 21-2 on aggregate in the first round.

The Bantwana ran riot with a 12-1 demolition in Gabon before sealing their superiority with a 9-1 victory at home.

    A Battle of African Heavyweights

The upcoming fixture is far from a routine encounter—it’s a battle of two ambitious teams with a fierce history of rivalry in African football.

Nigeria, a dominant force in the continent’s youth football scene, is well aware that South Africa will come into the clash with confidence, hunger, and momentum after their devastating show of attacking firepower in the first round.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, emphasized the importance of early preparation for such a high-stakes encounter.

“This is not just another qualifier. Nigeria vs South Africa is always a heated contest, full of intensity, emotions, and a strong desire to conquer.

The Flamingos remain one of the best teams in Africa and the world, and we are leaving nothing to chance in ensuring that they are well-prepared for the challenge ahead.”

While the Flamingos enter the tie as favourites based on pedigree, Bantwana’s head coach, Ntombifuthi Khumalo, has already raised concerns about his team’s ability to match Nigeria in quality and physicality.

“Tactically, Nigeria is very good, just like us. But when you go pound-for-pound, we are not ready yet. We need reinforcements, a longer camp, and more competitive friendlies to be able to stand up to Nigeria.

There are quality players in our country who deserve a place in the squad, and if we can get them, we will be in a stronger position.”

    Flamingos’ Road to Morocco 2025

This year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Morocco from October 17 to November 8, marks the first time the competition will be held annually and feature an expanded 24-team format.

Africa has been allocated five slots, including the host nation Morocco, leaving just four available for qualification.

Coach Bankole Olowookere, who guided the Flamingos to third place in 2022 and the quarter-finals last year, has assembled a 30-player squad filled with both experienced talents and promising newcomers.

Notable names include goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, midfield sensation Shakirat Moshood, and deadly forwards Harmony Chidi and Peace Effiong.

  • Lord’s Taverners Donates Sports Kits to CSED Initiative

    By Frank Ulom

UK based sports recycling charity, Lord’s Taverners recently donated sports kits and equipment worth over thirty million naira to CSED (Community Sport and educational Development) Initiative. The donated kits and equipment which weighed 998 kilogrammmes was warmly received by the Trustees of CSED Initiative. It would be recalled that since 2019, this is the fifth batch of sports kits donation that Lord’s Taverners have successfully donated to CSED Initiative. In total, CSED Initiative has received sports kits weighing over three thousand kilogrammes from Lord’s Taverners.

Most of this batch of donated sport kits items are for cricket, netball, badminton, football, casual sportswear and tracksuits. Some of the prominent institutions that have benefitted from the kits that were donated by Lord’s Taverners in the past are Edo State Cricket Association, the cricket team of ABU Zaria, the cricket team of IDPs Uhogua, Cameroonian refugees in Ogoja (Cross River State). Furthermore, some selected schools in Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom and Taraba States have benefitted from the free cricket kits that were donated by Lord’s Taverners to CSED Initiative.

In a recent email correspondence between a Trustee of CSED Initiative, a Project Manager of Lord’s Taverners, a representative of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) acknowledged the role the kits that Lord’s Taverners donated to CSED Initiative played in the development of some of the cricketers who recently played in the Nigerian female cricket team at the recently completed T20, U-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia. Nine out of these fifteen cricketers are players from Edo State whose cricket Association received 250 kilogrammes of donated cricket kits from CSED Initiative in April 2019. Furthermore, CSED have also donated cricket items to a cricket project that has supported the development of the two cricketers from Akwa Ibom State who featured for Nigeria in the Malaysian tournament.

During an interview with sports reporters, a representative of CSED Initiative stated that the new batch of donated equipment from Lord’s Taverners will enable them to empower three thousand children and youths in respect of supporting some of their basic sports kits needs. The donated kits will enable CSED Initiative to train three hundred P.E. Teachers in 2025. “So, it is going to be a win-win situation for grassroots sports.”

However, CSED Initiative have been informed that the Lord’s Taverners sports kits recycling project is going to close in March 2025, as a result of financial constraint. The National Coordinator of CSED Initiative stated that this news was a huge shock to them, and the sports recycling community all over the world. As Lord’s Taverners has a global
base of sports for change NGOs that they have supported in the past few decades. Though Lord’s Taverners was mainly set up as a cricket charity, it has over the years supported other sports at the grassroots level. “We in CSED Initiative, will forever remain grateful for the support we have received from Lord’s Taverners. Especially in respect of the sport of netball. As they have supported us with balls, bibs, netball jerseys, T-shirts and skirts. These donated netball kits gave us the courage to strive to revive the game of netball in Nigeria through our ongoing: “Project 2027” drive where we have trained and equipped more than three hundred and seventy P.E. Techers and community leaders.”

While receiving the donated items in their Niger Delta base, the National Coordinator of CSED Initiative assured Dave Pemberton (Project Manager of Lord’s Taverners) that the sports kits will be distributed for free to selected schools and vulnerable community groups (IDPs and asylum seekers/refugees) they currently work with, as well as new sets of schools and communities who will be expected to put the donated kit into good use.

  • Former Manchester United star receives four month sentence

It’s recently been revealed that a former Manchester United star has just received a four-month suspended sentence after an altercation with the police last summer.

The ex-Red Devil, Memphis Depay arrived at Old Trafford back in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven where he’d risen through the youth academy ranks to join the senior squad.

However, in a move to United worth £30 million, Depay struggled to make his mark.

In two years, Depay made 53 appearances with only seven goals and four assists, sealing his departure from United for only £13 million to Olympique Lyon.

Since then, the winger spent four years with Lyon where he found his form once more, grabbing 76 goals and 55 assists in 178 games, sparking interest from Barcelona, where he moved in 2021 on a free transfer.

However, the move didn’t exactly go to plan. A series of injuries limited Depay’s game time, seeing him only take to the pitch 42 times in two years, grabbing 14 goals and two assists.

He ultimately moved on to Atletico Madrid in 2023 where his injuries persisted, seeing him depart in 2024 without a club.

Now playing for Brazilian side Corinthians, Depay’s grabbed seven goals and five assists in 19 games, however, is also facing charges from an altercation prior to joining the Brazilian side.

The Dutch international has been handed a four-month suspended sentence for “dangerous driving” after being stopped by the police whilst on a night out in Monaco last summer.

Depay was “stopped by officers and breathalysed, with his blood alcohol level found to be 1.01 per millilitre – above the legal limit in Monaco, which is lower than in England and Wales, but the same as Scotland.”

Now, the attacker has been banned from driving for two years, with a fine issued of £75,000.

Taking to Instagram, Depay posted: “Last summer during my holidays in Monaco I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having some drinks in a restaurant.”

The post continued: “I should’ve got in a taxi instead but I didn’t so I would like to apologise and want to take full responsibility for my action. 2024 was a year of lessons and I will definitely learn from this one. 2025 we will do better. Memphis.”

  • Chelsea stars Chukwuemeka & Ugochukwu to ditch England and France for Nigeria? here’s the truth

Reports have been circulating that Chelsea midfielders Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu are set to switch their international allegiance from England and France to Nigeria ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speculation erupted after reports suggested that Chukwuemeka and Ugochukwu had applied for a nationality switch and were included in Nigeria’s 31-man provisional squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

However, BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji has confirmed, through a top NFF (Nigeria Football Federation) official, that no such process has been initiated.

“Only a federation can apply on behalf of players if they intend to switch. The news circulating now is fake,” the official clarified.

While both players remain eligible to represent Nigeria due to their heritage, there is no official confirmation that they have taken steps to commit to the Super Eagles.

Ugochukwu, a defensive powerhouse, could bring much-needed depth and stability to the Super Eagles’ midfield.

  • Manchester United Viktor Gyokeres summer transfer plans revealed

Links between Manchester United and Viktor Gyokeres have been building since Ruben Amorim took over at Old Trafford back in November.

Gyokeres is easily one of Amorim’s biggest successes from his time at Sporting, taking a striker from Coventry City and making him one of the most in-form strikers in Europe.

As such much of the football world are expecting a reunion for the pair, with Gyokeres even saying previously he wants to join United.

However, with Gyokeres being so in form, with 34 goals and seven assists in 33 games, and with a contract until 2028, Sporting are in a really strong position to negotiate for their star striker.

With United’s current financial struggles, securing the star with an agreement with Sporting will be no mean feat, but plans are reportedly already underway to seal the signing.

Marcus Rashford paved the way for Viktor Gyokeres

It’s now been revealed that an initial part of the plan to land Viktor Gyokeres revolves around Marcus Rashford’s move to Aston Villa, or rather, the move to not replace him.

Rashford is now at Villa Park for the remainder of the season, saving United the vast amount of his wages for the rest of the campaign.

As it looked increasingly likely that Amorim was not going to be using the star, his £325,000 per week wage would have been spent by the club to not even be sat on the bench.

However, this has now created some capacity in the budget, with the option still remaining for Villa to buy him for £40 million at the end of the season.

Another bonus for United is that with Amorim reluctant to Rashford even on the bench, there’s nothing to replace logistically, meaning the spending that would have been done on a replacement can now be set aside for Gyokeres in the summer.

This has been outlined by The Independent’s journalist Miguel Delaney, as reported by TeamTalk, who wrote: “It’s well known Marcus Rashford is angling for a move to Barcelona, but there was some surprise at one major club over his loan to Aston Villa as they were under the impression that he wanted to test himself abroad.”

He continued: “Ruben Amorim had the full backing of the Manchester United hierarchy in offloading him.

“The club did not replace him with any forward – but then it could be said they weren’t playing him anyway – and the thinking there is that Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres is in place for the summer.”

Now, all that remains to be seen is if United can move for Gyokeres before another top European club snaps him up, with the Sweden international having plenty of potential suitors.

  • Bruno Onyemaechi gets Europa League call as Olympiacos shake up squad

Greek champions Olympiacos have reinforced their belief in Nigerian defender Bruno Onyemaechi by including him in their UEFA Europa League squad for the knockout rounds.

Onyemaechi joined Olympiacos from Portuguese club Boavista in January for €2.5 million, and the club has wasted no time in integrating him into their European campaign.

According to CNN Portugal, Olympiacos registered Onyemaechi while removing experienced midfielder Sérgio Oliveira, who has been linked with a move away from the club. Brazilian winger Willian, who has joined Fulham, and Theofanis Bakoulas were also left out of the updated squad.

In 2021, INEOS donated £100 million to set up the Ineos Oxford Institute for antimicrobial research (IOI) which has become a world leading centre of research, training and education focused on overcoming the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

AMR is predicted to cause over 10 million deaths per year and is a huge threat to global health, food security and economic development. At its current rate of growth, AMR would cost the world economy over $100 trillion by 2050.

Thanks to INEOS’ investment, the IOI are developing new drugs to reboot the diminishing supply of antibiotics and training the next generation to continue the research that has been started.

At a special event at the Sheldonian Theatre on Wednesday 5th February 2025, Ratcliffe was awarded the Sheldon Medal, with fellow INEOS co-owners John Reece and Andy Currie also being recognised.

Speaking about the award, Ratcliffe commented: “I am truly honoured to receive the Sheldon Medal in recognition of INEOS’ donation to the University of Oxford to progress the urgent search for solutions to the crisis of antimicrobial resistance.”

He continued: “It is a privilege to partner with such a world-class university, whose history is entwined with that of antibiotics, to tackle such a key global challenge.

“I am encouraged to see Oxford’s remarkable ethos and academic rigour already making promising progress in the field.”

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Irene Tracey also commented: “I truly believe that in the not-too-distant future we will be announcing that the Ineos Oxford Institute for antimicrobial research has made significant headway in addressing the problem of antimicrobial resistance that will protect the future of modern medicine.”

She continued: “Thanks to INEOS’ transformational gift, we can work collaboratively towards global solutions and, together, reduce this significant threat to humanity.”
