  • Former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield ‘incapacitated’ after stroke

Former MTV VJ and New Jersey native Matt Pinfield has been “incapacitated” after suffering a stroke, his family said.

Pinfield, 63, had the incident in Los Angeles on Jan. 6 and is incapable of moving or making cognitive decisions, according to court documents obtained by the Asbury Park Press.

His daughters, Jessica and Maya Pinfield, are petitioning the court for a temporary conservatorship and asking that the court not give his girlfriend Kara Brown any decision-making power.

Los Angeles radio station KCSN said earlier this month that Pinfield was taking a leave of absence for health reasons.

Pinfield began DJing out of his family home in East Brunswick and on college radio at Rutgers. He gained a following spinning records at the Melody Bar in New Brunswick in the 1980s and ’90s. At the same time, he was the program director of Eatontown’s WHTG-FM, which became a renowned alternative rock station.

Between 1995 and 1999, he hosted “120 Minutes” — another alternative rock launching pad — and other programs on MTV. From 2001 to 2006, he was the vice president of A&R and artist development for Columbia Records.

He’s since been a radio personality in a number of cities, an occasional TV host and has made frequent appearances as a talking head in documentaries.

“I found my calling by the time I was in kindergarten,” he wrote in his autobiography “All These Things That I’ve Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life.”

“All I wanted to do was listen to records and get other people as excited about them as I was.”

  • Hollywood star admits ‘I’ve done some damage’

Hollywood star Bill Murray seemed to admit that he has “done some damage” during an appearance at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday following allegations of a string of behavioral incidents on movie production sets.

While speaking with Elvis Mitchell, a film critic, in the “Elvis Suite,” the 74-year-old Hollywood actor was asked about the characters he portrayed in “Riff Raff” and “The Friend,” according to Variety. Asked about playing characters who “lead lives of enormous charm” while being “aware of how poisonous their charm can be,” Murray said, “It’s always interesting when you’re playing a guy who has done some damage.”

“I know I’ve done some damage,” Murray added. “It’s sort of a penance to play them; to show that you’re accepting responsibility for it. It’s certainly always unconscious damage you’re doing, but you are responsible for the damage you’re doing.”

Entertainment Weekly reported that Murray pointed to his role in the film “On the Rocks,” which features the relationship between a woman and her playboy father, as an example of his statement.

“I was answering for a lot of things through that role,” Murray said.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Murray’s film career was temporarily paused after an incident occurred on the set of “Being Mortal” in 2022. The outlet noted that film production was stopped by Searchlight Pictures after the Hollywood star was accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior toward a young female assistant on the production set.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Murray previously addressed the incident, saying, “I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way. The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check it all out, investigate it, and so they stopped the production. But as of now, we’re talking and we’re trying to make peace with each other.”

“The world is different than it was when I was a little kid,” Murray said at the time of the allegations. “What I always thought was funny as a little kid isn’t necessarily the same as what’s funny now. Things change and the times change, so it’s important for me to figure it out. And I think the most important thing is that it’s best for the other person.”

Variety reported that Murray was also accused of “hurling insults” at a female star during the production of “Charlie’s Angels.” Additionally, Murray was also accused of harassment against another female star during the filming of “Quick Change.”

  • Giant fish attacks mermaid performer in Chinese aquarium

A shocking video shows a giant fish attacking and biting the head of a Russian “mermaid” performer in front of an audience of children at a Chinese aquarium.

In the video shared on X, formerly Twitter, by The Daily Mail, the Russian “mermaid” performer, identified as a 22-year-old by the name of Masha, can be seen swimming in an aquarium alongside a variety of fish. The Daily Mail reported that the 22-year-old was performing for children at an aquarium located at China’s Xishuangbanna Primitive Forest Park when the incident occurred.

The Daily Mail reported that the “mermaid” performer was able to break free from the jaws of the giant fish in just a matter of seconds and quickly swim to the top of the aquarium; however, the fish appeared to swallow the performer’s goggles and nose clips.

According to The New York Post, Russian media outlets said the 22-year-old “mermaid” performer suffered wounds to her neck, head, and eye during the incident. The Russian media outlets also reported that the 22-year-old was allegedly forced to return to the aquarium after the attack despite being in pain from her injuries.

A picture of the injuries Masha sustained in the fish attack has been shared on social media.

The New York Post also reported that the Russian performer was offered less than $100 as compensation for the incident and was warned by her employers at the Xishuangbanna Primitive Forest Park not to share footage of the fish attack. The outlet noted that despite the aquarium’s attempt to prevent footage of the incident from being released, the video went viral on Douyin, which is the Chinese version of TikTok.

According to The Daily Mail, Masha’s performance at the Xishuangbanna Primitive Forest Park was in a freshwater aquarium that contains rare amphibians and various native species from the Yangtze and Mekong Rivers. The outlet noted that it is not yet clear what specific fish attacked the 22-year-old Russian performer.

  • No survivors after American Airlines plane collides with Black Hawk helicopter in mid-air

An Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines plane in mid-air near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C., late Tuesday. Officials said all passengers, crew and troops were killed in the collision.

D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly told reporters that 28 bodies have been recovered as of late Thursday morning.

In an update posted on X, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said emergency personnel are continuing recovery efforts after a search-and-rescue mission was called off.

“Emergency personnel from across the region continue their recovery efforts this morning. We are lifting-up in prayer the families of the passengers and crews. The NTSB is leading the investigation with our full cooperation and support,” Youngkin wrote.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Black Hawk was on a training flight when it collided with the passenger plane.

“At about 8:48 last night, a UH60, assigned to the U.S. Army Aviation Brigade in the military district of Washington, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, collided tragically with a civilian airliner,” Hegseth said on Thursday. “The Army unit involved was with Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion at Fort Belvoir. It was an annual proficiency training flight.”

“We do know on our side who was involved. It was a fairly experienced crew, and that was doing a required annual night evaluation. They did have night vision goggles,” Hegseth added. “It’s a tragedy, a horrible loss of life for those 64 souls on that civilian airliner. And of course, the three soldiers in that Black Hawk. They’re in our prayers, their families and their communities as people are notified. I can’t imagine and I know it’s it’s gone from a rescue mission to a recovery mission.”

  • ‘Alice’ star Linda Lavin’s immediate cause of death revealed

Stage and screen actor Linda Lavin’s immediate cause of death has been revealed.

The “Alice” star’s death certificate, obtained and posted online Monday by TMZ, said that her immediate cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest due to her underlying lung cancer. Cardiopulmonary arrest, which is also known as cardiac arrest, occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating effectively and prevents blood from circulating through the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Confirming her death in late December, her representative, Bill Veloric, said the 87-year-old died in Los Angeles after complications from recently discovered lung cancer. Lavin’s death certificate said that it was not known how long she had been living with lung cancer.

The document, issued by the Los Angles County Department of Public Health, confirmed that Lavin died Dec. 29 at her home in Malibu. On Dec. 19, the actor had undergone a bronchoscopy — a procedure that allows doctors to examine airways in the lungs. She was cremated in January and her remains were given to her husband, Steve Bakunas, the document said.

Aside from her Emmy-nominated starring role in “Alice” — the 1976 CBS sitcom adaptation of Martin Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” that ran for nine seasons — Lavin was a Tony Award winner. She won the award for best actress in a play for Neil Simon’s “Broadway Bound” in 1987 and scored five other Tony nominations during her Broadway career. The actor also appeared on the small screen in “The O.C.,” “The Sopranos,” “9JKL,” “Santa Clarita Diet” and “Sean Saves the World.”

More recently, Lavin appeared in the CBS sitcom “B Positive,” the 2021 film “Being the Ricardos” and the Netflix series “No Good Deed.” At the time of her death, she was filming the upcoming Hulu series “Mid-Century Modern.”

  • Former Special Forces soldier from Florida among ‘J6ers’ still in jail after pardon

Retired U.S. Army Special Forces master sergeant Jeremy Brown remains in jail while his attorney advocates for his release under President Donald Trump’s pardon for Jan. 6 crimes.

Brown, a Tampa resident sentenced to seven years on weapons charges, is among a handful of still-incarcerated convicts who are most associated with the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot, but who were charged with other crimes outside of Washington, D.C.

The argument being made for Brown’s release: His other crimes came to light only through the course of Jan. 6 investigations.

As hundreds of prisoners walked free following Trump’s proclamation, Brown, 50, was transferred last week from a Washington, D.C., jail to the Grayson County Detention Center in Kentucky. The reason for the transfer is unclear.

A jury in 2022 convicted Brown on charges of possessing an unregistered sawed-off shotgun, a short-barrelled rifle, fragmentation grenades and a classified military document. Federal agents said they’d found them on his Florida property while serving a search warrant related to Jan. 6 and his ties to the Oath Keepers, a militaristic extremist group that entered the Capitol.

Brown also was charged with two misdemeanors for attending the Jan. 6 riot, where he was photographed in a helmet and military gear. Those charges, court records show, were dropped shortly after the president’s pardon.

A memo prepared by one of Brown’s attorneys with the heading “Free Jeremy Brown” argues that the pardon should apply to Brown’s federal convictions for crimes in Florida because they are “100% J6 related as required by the Presidential Proclamation. Jeremy was arrested and imprisoned based on J6 allegations that led to a pretextual search warrant.”

That lawyer, Plant City-based Carolyn Stewart, posted online Saturday that “our facts have reached the White House & the solution is in the works.”

Other “J6ers” with similarly unclear pardon situations include Homosassa’s Daniel Ball, 38, who was released and quickly re-arrested on a warrant for gun possession – a charge that emerged from a search related to Jan. 6.

Dominic Box, who was awaiting sentencing for felony civil disorder, remains in the same Kentucky jail as Brown. While awaiting trial for his Jan. 6 charges, Box was arrested by a deputy who said he found him passed out in his car outside a Jacksonville restaurant.

Ben Martin, a California man convicted of illegally possessing eight firearms that agents found during a Jan. 6-related search, also remains in custody after his Jan. 6 charges were pardoned.

Calls for the release of these so-called “left-behind J6ers” have been amplified in right-wing media and spread through pro-MAGA corners of the internet since the president issued his pardons on his first day back in office. A common refrain: “No man left behind.”

Close Trump ally Roger Stone posted on X about Brown and Martin, writing “I will not rest until these victims are free. In fact, I’m working on it right now.” Former CBS News journalist turned right-wing pundit Lara Logan has also advocated for Brown’s release.

Stewart’s memo on Brown reiterates a claim that Brown’s former attorney made at trial – that federal agents planted the grenades and other evidence. They cited forensics showing the items lacked Brown’s DNA.

The jury, which heard audio of Brown reacting to news that agents found the grenades, apparently didn’t believe that defense. Jurors convicted Brown on six federal charges, including the grenades, and found him not guilty of four.

Brown appealed. Oral arguments in that appellate case are scheduled for March 6 at the U.S. courthouse in Jacksonville.

In a lengthy statement at his sentencing in Tampa, Brown mentioned his connection to Jan. 6, 2021, suggesting the riot was orchestrated by the FBI.

Brown has maintained a public presence despite years of incarceration, recording podcasts over the phone and running an unsuccessful campaign for the Florida House of Representatives from jail.

  • Pilot not injured in F-35 crash at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, military officials say

An F-35 fighter jet crashed early Tuesday afternoon at Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, according to an official there.

The pilot was not injured in the crash, which occurred around 1 p.m., according to Airman 1st Class Spencer Hanson. He said an emergency response is ongoing and had few additional details.

There were no additional reports of injuries within an hour of the crash, Hanson said.

“They cordoned off the area where it crashed on the runway,” he said. Emergency services including ambulances and fire trucks were in the area, he said.

There are 54 of the fighter jets stationed at Eielson, which is located about 25 miles southeast of Fairbanks. The last two arrived at the base in 2022.

Two squadrons of F-22 Raptor fighter jets are also stationed with the 3rd Wing at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson near Anchorage.

The F-35A is the U.S. Air Force’s “latest fifth-generation fighter” that replaced an aging fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt II’s, according to an Eielson fact sheet.

The F-35s are long-range supersonic fighter jets with stealth capability that can reach anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere in one mission.

The average price of one new F-35 was set at roughly $81 million in a preliminary deal for a large order of new aircraft between the U.S. Department of Defense and manufacturer Lockheed Martin as reported in December by Air & Space Forces Magazine.

  • ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape’ star Andie MacDowell diagnosed with rare syndrome

For “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” star Andie MacDowell, life recently has been a real pain in the … sciatic nerve. It runs from the buttocks to the leg and was causing the former Calvin Klein model to suffer from a rare condition.

    Andie MacDowell talks diagnosis

MacDowell, who is 66, recently appeared on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” where she discussed what was troubling her.

“I have piriformis syndrome, so it’s a muscle that kind of clamps down on my sciatic nerve, and it was shooting down my leg,” she told Barrymore, as reported by People.

MacDowell said she had been riding her indoor bike “like a crazy person,” according to E! NewsThe overuse then caused the condition to flare up.

“It’s not appropriate for my body, and I ended up with bad knees and a bad hip,” she said. “I thought I was literally falling apart.”

MacDowell initially thought she was going to need a hip replacement, but she managed to shrug off the condition surgery-free.

“I have to work my tiny little bottom and my hips,” she said. “I have to work the bottom and work my hip. I just do it every day.”

    What is piriformis syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome, according to the American Osteopathic Association, is “a frequently misdiagnosed pain in the buttocks.” It’s associated with sciatica, sometimes leading doctors to incorrect conclusions during examinations.

The neuromuscular condition is caused by the piriformis muscle (found in the buttocks) pressuring the sciatic nerve. It’s usually caused by muscle overuse, making it more common among marathon runners and other athletes.

Symptoms include pain, tingling or numbness in the buttocks, pain while walking, increased pain during extended periods of sitting and pain down the back of the legs.

The AOA reports that there are about 200,000 cases each year. It could be more common, though, according to Harvard Health Publishing senior faculty editor Dr. Robert H. Shmerling.

“Piriformis syndrome may be the most common cause of sciatic-type back pain you’ve never heard of; or it may be rare, no one is really sure,” Shmerling said. “If you have persistent, unexplained buttock pain that travels into the leg, stop carrying your wallet in your back pocket, try not to sit so much, and see your doctor.

“You might have a disk problem or some other common back trouble; but you could have piriformis syndrome and finding out sooner rather than later can make a difference.”
