  • Additional 500 Fort Drum soldiers deploying to US southern border

About 500 additional 10th Mountain Division soldiers will be deploying to the U.S. southern border to support a mission to secure the area and “protect the territorial integrity” of the border with Mexico as called for by President Donald J. Trump, the post announced Wednesday.

The soldiers will join an unknown number of servicemembers with the 23rd Military Police Company who deployed from Fort Drum in January, according to a statement from U.S. Northern Command.

The statement says that the 10th Mountain Division will serve as a Joint Task Force headquarters charged with overseeing units from across military services in support of the Southern Border Surge, at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

The unit will operate under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, which is working in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection. Units from multiple installations across the Joint Force will fall under the 10th Mountain Division Headquarters and report directly to them, while physically located in various parts of the southern United States, according to the statement.

“The 10th Mountain Division stands ready to deploy our Soldiers,” Lt. Col. Sarah J. Ray, the 10th Mountain Division spokesperson, said in the statement. “Under the direction of U.S. Northern Command, the 10th Mountain Division will deploy ready forces to support the effort to take operational control of the southern border.”

The Fort Drum soldiers join about 1,600 active-duty personnel from the Army and other services who deployed to the southern border earlier this year, augmenting the about 2,500 service members who were already supporting Customs and Border Protection’s southern border mission.

  • Hydrogen-powered trucks are now in Georgia. A planned $33M station will fuel them

Hydrogen-powered semitrucks are now navigating roads along Georgia’s coast, ferrying supplies and goods from the state’s ports to inland auto factories and construction sites.

Just like their diesel counterparts, those trucks need places to refuel. A company announced Tuesday it will soon provide such a place.

North Carolina-based HydroFleet said it will invest nearly $33 million to build a hydrogen production and fueling station in the Savannah suburb of Pooler to service heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell trucks. The company, which specializes in hydrogen equipment and fuel supplying, said the coastal Georgia refueling center will support dozens of trucks rumbling along the region’s interstates as an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel.

“We know customers want zero-emission fleets but have struggled to source the entire hydrogen ecosystem at a price that is competitive,” HydroFleet CEO Scott Moe said in a news release. “Through strategic partnerships and proven safe technology, HydroFleet solves this challenging industry problem.”

The Pooler location will be close to Hyundai Motor Group’s $7.6 billion electric vehicle factory in Bryan County, which is already tapping into hydrogen power for its trucking fleet. In December, the Korean automaker deployed 21 of its XCIENT hydrogen fuel cell trucks to transport materials from Georgia’s ports to its plant, which began operations in October.

Hydrogen power has caught the attention of Georgia leaders who see the emerging technology as a potential game changer in clean energy shipping and green logistics. Georgia has emerged as a leader in e-mobility, battery and EV production, and the development of a “hydrogen highway” through the Peach State has piqued the interest of Georgia’s economic development brass.

“HydroFleet’s hydrogen refueling and production facilities are a critical link in building out infrastructure for the industrial use of hydrogen fuel cell technology,” Georgia Department of Economic Development Commissioner Pat Wilson said in a statement.

Hydrogen is an abundant element, but to be used as fuel it needs to be isolated from other compounds. The environmental benefits depend on how the hydrogen is produced — more than 90% of hydrogen produced today is derived from fossil fuels, while “green” hydrogen is produced using renewable energy, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. But vehicles fueled by hydrogen produce far fewer tailpipe emissions.

In hydrogen fuel cells like the ones powering the new trucks, hydrogen molecules are split into protons and electrons to create a flow of electricity, much like in a battery.

Founded in 2016, HydroFleet has delivered more than 450,000 kilograms of hydrogen gas to power semis, buses, forklifts and hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles. The new Pooler facility will initially refuel up to 14 trucks a day and will have a future daily capacity to serve 50 trucks.

“The advanced technology that HydroFleet employs to provide hydrogen for forklifts and heavy trucks is truly amazing and the trucks make hardly any noise, reducing noise pollution and have zero emissions,” Trip Tollison, the Savannah area’s top economic development official, said in the release.

  • Thousands of tax forms sent to incorrect addresses, Maryland state comptroller says

A printing malfunction caused about 6,000 1099-G forms to end up at the wrong addresses, a notice posted by the Maryland comptroller’s office warned Tuesday.

The printing error was limited to the 1099-G forms, the comptroller’s office said. Marylanders who receive a form that is not theirs are advised to “destroy the document immediately.”

The malfunction was an internal issue and not caused by an external data breach, the office specified.

New copies will be on the way to their rightful addresses later this week, according to the agency, though the information is also available via the General Accounting Division’s website. Affected taxpayers also can expect to receive information on credit monitoring paid for by the comptroller’s office, it said.

Form 1099-G covers “certain government payments” like unemployment benefits, state or local tax credits or refunds and taxable grants and some other payments, according to the IRS.

“We sincerely apologize for not catching the error and for any distress this incident may cause the affected individuals. We will be altering our process in the future on printing jobs to ensure this type of incident does not ever happen again,” the notice said.

  • US Postal Service suspends inbound parcels from China, Hong Kong

The U.S. Postal Service said that it would temporarily suspend the acceptance of inbound international packages from China and Hong Kong Posts until further notice.

USPS said letters and flat mail from China and Hong Kong would not be affected. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move comes after President Donald Trump revoked a “de minimis” allowance that exempts small packages worth less than $800 from duties, used by Chinese-linked e-commerce companies, as part of the 10% tariff order placed on goods from China and Hong Kong issued just after midnight, Eastern time.

  • Army helicopter was flying above limit before midair collision

A U.S. Army helicopter was flying higher than permitted limits when it collided in midair with an American Airlines Group Inc. regional jet last week, according to U.S. aviation safety investigators.

The altitude of both aircraft are central issues to investigators working to unravel how the worst U.S. civil aviation disaster in decades occurred, and how to prevent similar accidents from happening again.

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Tuesday that its latest data shows the Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk was flying at about 300 feet at the time of the accident, about 100 feet higher than a preliminary review of radar data indicated. The updated assessment of what air traffic controllers saw on their display in the tower reflects multiple radar sensors and other data sources, the agency said.

The NTSB said it needs additional information from the Black Hawk itself, which it expects to receive after recovering it from the water later this week.

In addition to altitude, investigators have also looked into staffing at the air-traffic control tower on the night of the accident and are reviewing the maintenance records for both aircraft. The crash killed 67 people.

Helicopters in the area where the crash occurred are limited to 200 feet. Investigators previously disclosed the American jet’s flight data recorder measured the impact as happening at 325 feet — plus or minus 25 feet.

Bloomberg previously reported that the helicopter was flying higher than the permitted limit.

  • Army breaks recruitment records after Trump election win

The United States military appears to be making a major military recruitment turnaround following President Donald Trump’s landslide victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. The recruitment turnaround comes as the U.S. Army revealed record recruitment statistics for the month of December.

In a Tuesday post on X, formerly Twitter, the U.S. Army shared a picture of Army recruits and announced that U.S. Army Recruiting had “their most productive December in 15 years by enlisting 346 Soldiers daily into the World’s greatest #USArmy.”

Army officials added, “Our Recruiters have one of the toughest jobs – inspiring the next generation of #Soldiers to serve. Congratulations and keep up the great work! #BAYCB.”

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also celebrated the Army’s recent recruiting numbers, tweeting, “BREAKING: In December 2024, the @USArmy had its best recruiting number in 12 years. In January 2025, the Army hit its best recruiting number in 15 YEARS. BOTTOM LINE: America’s youth want to serve under the bold & strong ‘America First’ leadership of @realDonaldTrump.”

According to Military.com, internal data reviewed by the outlet shows that the Army is roughly halfway toward its goal of recruiting 61,000 active-duty soldiers during Fiscal Year 2025. Since the start of the fiscal year in October, the Army has reached 30,000 new enlistments, which is an increase of approximately 6,000 enlistments compared to the same period in Fiscal Year 2024, according to Military.com.

The Army’s increased recruitment following Trump’s election win in November represents a stark contrast to the military’s recruitment shortfall in Fiscal Year 2023. According to the Department of Defense, the military missed its recruitment goal by roughly 41,000 recruits in Fiscal Year 2023 under the Biden-Harris administration.

In the face of military recruitment challenges under the Biden-Harris administration, the Army announced last year that it would be reducing the size of its force by roughly 24,000 troops.

In a post reshared by Hegseth on X, radio show host Christopher Calvin Reid noted the contrast in military recruitment under Trump’s leadership, saying, “There are several young men from my hometown who were planning to go to college but have now enlisted to serve under @PeteHegseth and @realDonaldTrump! Our military will be back to full strength by the end of the year thanks to ending DEI and promoting the meritocracy!”

  • 5,000 FBI employees linked to Jan 6 cases

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials reportedly provided President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) with information on Tuesday regarding 5,000 employees involved in investigations linked to the storming of Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021.

According to Fox News, the FBI confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the Justice Department had been provided with a list of FBI employees who worked on the January 6 cases under the Biden-Harris administration. The outlet noted that the information was provided to the Justice Department in response to a Tuesday deadline given by the Trump administration’s DOJ.

Sources familiar with the situation told CNN that out of the roughly 13,000 FBI agents and 38,000 FBI employees, the details of over 5,000 personnel were shared with the DOJ.

Fox News reported that FBI employees said a questionnaire was sent to thousands of the agency’s employees asking FBI personnel to disclose any activities they participated in with regard to the January 6 investigations. Employees were asked to answer whether they worked as case agents for various investigations, participated in grand jury subpoenas, or responded to leads from other FBI field offices.

According to Fox News, the information requested by Acting U.S. Deputy Attorney Emil Bove includes the current titles, former titles, identifying numbers, and investigative roles of “thousands” of employees at the agency.

Fox News reported that the FBI’s questionnaire regarding the January 6 investigations has received backlash from some FBI agents and employees. A lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia by nine FBI agents and employees on Tuesday stated, “Plaintiffs assert that the specific purpose of this survey is to identify agents and other FBI personnel to be terminated as a form of politically motivated retribution.”

The lawsuit added, “The very act of compiling lists of persons who worked on matters that upset Donald Trump is retaliatory in nature, intended to intimidate FBI agents and other personnel, and to discourage them from reporting any future malfeasance and by Donald Trump and his agents.”

  • Deadly virus found in US

Researchers recently announced that a deadly virus has been found in short-tailed shrews in the United States. The discovery of the virus has led to concerns regarding the potential for animals to transmit the virus to humans.

A recent press release from Australia’s University of Queensland said, “Researchers at The University of Queensland have identified the first henipavirus in North America.”

According to the press release, researchers confirmed that the “Camp Hill virus” was discovered in northern short-tailed shrews in the state of Alabama. Fox News reported that a henipavirus is classified as a zoonotic virus. According to the Cleveland Clinic, zoonotic diseases are “infectious illnesses that spread between animals and humans.”

In the press release, Dr. Rhys Parry from the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences said, “Henipaviruses have caused serious disease and death in people and animals in other regions.”

Parry added, “The discovery of a henipavirus in North America is highly significant, as it suggests these viruses may be more globally distributed than previously thought.”

READ MORE: CDC ‘monitoring’ Chinese virus outbreak

In the university’s press release, Parry emphasized that additional research is required to determine whether the Camp Hill virus could represent a “threat” to humans.

“The closest known henipavirus to Camp Hill virus that has caused disease in humans is Langya virus, which crossed from shrews to humans in China,” Parry said. “This indicates that shrew-to-human transmission can occur.”

Parry explained that one of the “most dangerous” henipaviruses is the Hendra virus, which was first discovered in Brisbane, Australia. Parry noted that the Hendra virus has a fatality rate of 70%. Parry also noted that the Nipah virus in Southeast Asia has a fatality rate of between 40% and 75%.

In the recent press release, Dr. Ariel Isaacs indicated that the researchers at the University of Queensland plan to focus on developing vaccines for henipaviruses in the future.

“The next step for this work is to characterize key surface proteins on the virus that are involved in cell entry to broaden our understanding of the virus family and identify better ways to protect against it,” Isaacs stated.

To avoid henipavirus infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people avoid “unprotected contact” with animals that could be infected with the virus. While the CDC’s website says that “no specific antiviral treatment” is currently available for henipavirus infections, the CDC’s website notes, “Therapy consists of supportive care and management of complications.”
