  • Hong Kong vows to keep up ‘national security’ crackdown

This article was originally published by Radio Free Asia and is reprinted with permission.

Hong Kong police say they will keep up a crackdown on dissent in the name of “national security,” citing the actions of overseas activists and “interference by foreign forces” as an ongoing threat.

Deputy Police Commissioner Andrew Kan, who heads the police National Security Department, said the police will continue to focus on threats to “national security” and keep up pressure on overseas pro-democracy activists by questioning their family members and associates in Hong Kong.

Asked if there is still an ongoing threat to national security in Hong Kong, Kan said it has “been there all along.”

“Some people who have absconded overseas continue to commit crimes of endangering national security,” Kan told a news conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday. “We think this is major interference by foreign forces.”

Since Beijing imposed two national security laws banning public opposition and dissent in the city, blaming “hostile foreign forces” for the protests, hundreds of thousands have voted with their feet amid plummeting human rights rankings, shrinking press freedom and widespread government propaganda in schools.

Some fled to the United Kingdom on the British National Overseas, or BNO, visa program. Others have made their homes anew in the United States, Canada, Australia and Germany.

Many are continuing their activism and lobbying activists, yet struggle with exile in some way, worrying about loved ones back home while facing threats to their personal safety from supporters of Beijing overseas.

Hong Kong’s leaders have vowed to pursue activists in exile for life.

Kan said “local terrorism” was also still a threat, while “terrorist and violent speech are being spread both online and offline.”

    “Soft confrontation”

Meanwhile, there was a growing threat from “soft confrontation” with the authorities, Kan said. Previously, Hong Kong officials have suggested that works of art could be a form of “soft confrontation.”

Police have made more than 300 arrests under two national security laws passed in the wake of the 2019 protest movement, according to their annual crime report.

“As of the end of December 2024, the National Security Department of the Police had arrested a total of 316 persons,” the police said in its 2024 crime report. “Among them, around 60% had been charged.”

The arrests were made under both the 2020 National Security Law, which was imposed on the city by Beijing in the wake of the 2019 protests, and the 2023 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, passed in March 2023 at Beijing’s insistence following a two-decade delay due to widespread public opposition.

The report didn’t provide a breakdown of arrests under each law.

More than 10,000 people have been arrested and at least 2,800 prosecuted in a citywide crackdown in the wake of the 2019 protest movement, mostly under public order charges or colonial-era sedition laws.

According to the U.S.-based Hong Kong Democracy Council, 1,920 of those defendants are classed as political prisoners –- peaceful critics of the government. Defendants in national security cases are far less likely to be granted bail, swelling the population of remand prisoners.

Critics said the authorities in Hong Kong seem to want to keep up a sense of political tension despite the disappearance of most forms of political dissent, and that the police don’t seem to want to end the crackdown.

“Foreign countries, which have their own threats to national security, use methods that achieve a balance between practical results and public peace of mind,” current affairs commentator Johnny Lau told RFA Cantonese in a recent interview. “It’s about both governance and prosperity, and the overall atmosphere in society.”

“It’s clear that the authorities could actually relax their methods now.”

Hong Kong saw a total of 94,747 crimes in 2024, an increase of 5% compared with 2023, with 10,485 cases of violent crime, a rise of 3.6% on the previous year.

Meanwhile, crimes of deception rose by 11.7% during the year, 61.8% of which were online crimes.

Applications to join the police force rose by one third from 2023, to 897, following a publicity campaign in Hong Kong’s schools and universities, the report said.

  • Trump admin uncovers $20 billion wasted by Biden-Harris admin

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Lee Zeldin revealed on Wednesday that the Trump administration located $20 billion in American tax dollars that the Biden-Harris administration intentionally wasted ahead of President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, Zeldin announced that there will be “zero tolerance of any waste and abuse” under the Trump administration. The EPA administrator also referenced a recent Project Veritas video that featured a Biden-Harris EPA advisor admitting that the administration was “throwing gold bars off the Titanic” and trying to “get the money out as fast as possible” ahead of Trump’s inauguration as part of an “insurance policy against Trump winning” the 2024 presidential election.

“An extremely disturbing video circulated two months ago, featuring a Biden EPA political appointee talking about how they were ‘tossing gold bars off the Titanic,’ rushing to get billions of your tax dollars out the door before Inauguration Day,” Zeldin said. “The ‘gold bars’ were tax dollars and ‘tossing them off the Titanic’ meant the Biden administration knew they were wasting it.”

Zeldin noted that following his confirmation by the U.S. Senate, his team “shockingly” discovered that $20 billion in taxpayer funding was “parked at an outside financial institution by the Biden EPA.”

“This scheme was the first of its kind in EPA history, and it was purposefully designed to obligate all the money in a rush job with reduced oversight,” Zeldin added.

READ MORE: ‘Dirty little secret’ of gov’t spending exposed

Zeldin noted that the $20 billion was awarded under the Biden administration to eight entities to distribute money to non-governmental organizations with “far less transparency.” As an example, Zeldin shared that $7 billion was sent to the Climate United Fund.

While Zeldin emphasized that there is “zero reason to suspect any wrongdoing by the bank,” he said that the agreement with the bank should be “instantly terminated” and that the bank “must immediately return all of the gold bars that the Biden administration tossed off the Titanic.”

Zeldin also announced that the EPA will be referring the incident to the inspector general’s office, that the EPA will “review every penny that has gone out the door,” and that the agency will work with the Department of Justice under the Trump administration.

“The days of irresponsibly shoveling boatloads of cash to far-left activist groups in the name of environmental justice and climate equity are over,” Zeldin said in the video. “The American public deserves a more transparent and accountable government than what transpired these past four years.”

  • Trump DOJ sues New York, warns ‘You’re next, get ready’

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Wednesday that the Department of Justice is suing New York for deciding to “prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens.” The attorney general also warned other states not following federal immigration laws, saying, “You’re next, get ready.”

During a Wednesday press conference, Bondi explained that President Donald Trump’s administration filed charges against Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.), New York Attorney General Letitia James, and New York Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark Schroeder.

“This is a new DOJ, and we are taking steps to protect Americans, American citizens, and angel moms, like the mom standing right behind me, who you’re gonna hear from in a moment,” Bondi said. “New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops today.”

“As you know, we sued Illinois, and New York didn’t listen. So now you’re next,” Trump’s attorney general added. “Millions of illegal aliens with violent records have flooded into our communities, bringing violence and deadly drugs with them.”

Bondi warned that if states do not follow federal immigration laws, the Department of Justice will hold them accountable. She described the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Illinois as “strike one” and the administration’s lawsuit against New York as “strike two.”

Bondi added, “And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next, get ready.”

READ MORE: Pic: Secret anti-Trump resistance plan signed by 22 blue states exposed

Addressing the lawsuit against New York regarding its illegal immigration policies, Bondi said the Democrat-run state has “green light laws” that prevent law enforcement officials from checking the identity of illegal immigrants and accessing their background information when they “pull them over.” Bondi explained that the state’s green light laws put law enforcement officers’ “lives on the line” as they often have “no idea who they’re dealing with.”

“Violent criminals, gang members, drug traffickers, human smugglers will no longer terrorize the American people,” Bondi said during Wednesday’s press conference. “And that is why we are here today. You will be held accountable if you do not follow federal law. It’s over, it ends, and we’re coming after you.”

Following Bondi’s announcement on Wednesday, Hochul released a statement claiming that the press conference was just “smoke and mirrors” and that the Trump administration’s lawsuit was just a “routine civil action about a law passed in 2019 that has been upheld by the courts time and again.”

“We expect Pam Bondi’s worthless, publicity-driven lawsuit to be a total failure, just like all the others,” Hochul added. “Let me be clear: New York is not backing down.”

  • 8 illegal immigrants arrested, charged in sex trafficking ring

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that eight Venezuelan illegal immigrants were arrested and charged with allegedly operating a transnational sex trafficking ring with ties to the Tren de Aragua gang.

In a Wednesday press release, the Justice Department announced that eight defendants had been charged with “various offenses arising from their respective roles in a transnational commercial sex enterprise.” According to the press release, the eight illegal immigrants used motels in Nashville to conduct “an illegal commercial sex and sex trafficking enterprise” from July of 2022 to March of 2024.

“According to the indictment, once the defendants facilitated the victims’ arrival in the United States, the defendants utilized online commercial sex websites to post advertisements for the victims and then used the internet and their cellular phones to direct commercial sex buyers to engage in commercial sex with the victims at the motels before collecting the proceeds from that commercial sex for the defendants’ benefit.” the Justice Department stated.

According to The New York Post, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee Robert McGuire told reporters on Tuesday that when the sex trafficking ring victims arrived from outside the United States and were “far from home,” the women were “bullied, intimidated and threatened to have sex with total strangers.”

READ MORE: Suspected Venezuelan gang members protected by federal judge

Law enforcement officials noted that some of the victims had their immigration documents and children taken from them to ensure that they complied with the orders of the sex trafficking ring, according to The New York Post.

The Justice Department identified Yilibeth Del Carmen Rivero-Del Caldera and her son, Klebier Daniel Mota Rivero, as the leaders of the sex trafficking ring. Law enforcement officials claimed that the leaders of the sex trafficking ring used their connection to the Tren de Aragua gang and the gang’s “reputation for violence” to threaten the victims and to “compel them to continue engaging in commercial sex acts until the defendants deemed their debts repaid.”

Addressing the recent indictment against the eight Venezuelan illegal immigrants, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David B. Rausch emphasized that law enforcement officials will not “stand by and allow TdA or any criminal organization to get a stronghold in Tennessee.”

“They are not going to be here. They will not be allowed to commit crime here. We will hunt these bad actors down,” Rausch added. “We will dismantle them, and we will work with every tool that we have under the law to hold these violent criminals absolutely accountable for my fellow Tennesseans.”

  • Major case against Trump aides dropped by appeals court

The appeal charges against President Donald Trump’s aides, Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, in the classified documents case that was launched after the Biden-Harris administration raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate were dismissed on Tuesday by a federal appeals court.

Fox News reported that the case was dismissed by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday. According to CBS News, Hayden O’Byrne, acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, had requested last month that the court dismiss the appeal in the classified documents case by former Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed under the Biden-Harris administration.

In Tuesday’s order, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals wrote, “Appellant’s ‘Unopposed Motion to Dismiss Appeal’ is GRANTED. This appeal is DISMISSED.”

According to Fox News, De Oliveira, Trump’s property manager for Mar-A-Lago, and Nauta, Trump’s valet, had both pleaded not guilty to federal charges accusing the two Trump aides of conspiring to obstruct the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation into classified documents discovered at the president’s residence at Mar-a-Lago.

READ MORE: Prosecutor disqualified in Trump election interference case

According to Fox News, Smith was appointed as special counsel by former Attorney General Merrick Garland in November of 2022. As special counsel, Smith led the Biden-Harris administration’s investigation into Trump’s retention of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago following his departure from the White House in January of 2021. Smith also investigated Trump’s alleged role in the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and Trump’s actions in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents case against Trump in July of 2024 after ruling that Smith was unconstitutionally appointed by the Biden-Harris administration as special counsel.

According to ABC News, Cannon’s ruling was appealed by Smith; however, the former special counsel was later forced to drop the appeal against Trump following the 47th president’s landslide victory in the 2024 election since the Justice Department’s policies prevent a sitting president from facing federal prosecution.

  • Daughter of Maine war hero shocked that he is Fort Bragg’s new namesake

The country’s biggest military base was abruptly renamed for a Maine hero of World War II on Monday. His daughter didn’t hear the news until a Bangor Daily News reporter called her the next morning.

“This blows my mind,” said Diane Watts of Levant.

Her father, Army Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, is the new namesake of Fort Bragg in North Carolina after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the change. It was named for Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg from 1918 to 2023, then renamed Fort Liberty following the passage of a law that effectively barred Confederate names from military bases.

President Donald Trump criticized the renaming of bases during his campaign. Even though the namesake has changed, Hegseth announced the change with a post saying, “Bragg is back!”

This Bragg is a far different figure. He saved a man’s life during the war. His daughter said he refused promotions. He rarely talked about his service, she said. When he returned home, he became a respected businessperson and was a selectman in Nobleboro.

Bragg lived most of his life there but was born in Sabattus. As a child during the Great Depression, he peddled vegetables to help his family, according to his 1999 obituary in the Portland Press Herald. He was drafted into the war before he graduated, said Watts, the youngest of his three daughters.

Bragg was an Army paratrooper. His 17th Airborne Division was based at Fort Bragg and joined the Battle of the Bulge between Belgium and Luxembourg just before Christmas 1944 on the orders of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was trying to repel a massive German invasion.

Sometime after that, Bragg was briefly captured by the Germans, Watts said. But a Nazi soldier learned that Bragg was a fellow Mason, and he could not kill him in good conscience. The German told the soldiers to hit him over the head and steal an ambulance.

Bragg drove through heavy fighting and took two German prisoners, according to a 1969 book by Eisenhower’s son. He and his partner seated one German between them, and they put the other on the vehicle’s running board. Bragg’s companion shot and killed the one outside the vehicle when he took off and ran.

A German machine gun targeted the ambulance. Bragg floored it through the fire, which killed the prisoner in the middle of the two Americans. He drove the ambulance 20 miles to a Belgium command post. John Martz, a wounded soldier in the back, credited Bragg with saving his life. The two men met in California later in life.

Hegseth cited that episode in his memorandum renaming the fort, noting the Silver Star that Bragg got for bravery and the Purple Heart he got for wounds.

Watts, Bragg’s daughter, said her father didn’t talk in detail about his service with her until she was an adult. Her mother, Barbara, suffered from depression. After Barbara attempted suicide, he recounted his time in the war in detail while Watts stayed with him for a few days.

She spent lots of time with her father as a child. He ran a building moving business, and she often helped him keep books and collect money from clients. Bragg was once asked to move a termite-infested house that collapsed during one move. He rebuilt it at a cost of $180,000, and only charged the man $1,500.

Bragg sold the business in the 1980s and went on to run a portable sawmill. He died of cancer at age 75. Barbara, who was the daughter of MLB catcher Val Picinich, died in 2016, Watts said. She imagines that her father would be appreciative but a little embarrassed by his new honor, saying he always downplayed his service by saying he was “just a private.”

“They tried to promote me, but I wouldn’t accept it,” Watts remembered him saying. “I did not want to have to give an order that sent another young man to his death.”

  • Hamas backtracks on hostage release stop. But Israel surrounds Gaza

Hamas is using hostages to pressure Israel, but risks blowing up the truce. After the announcement made last night about a “to be defined” postponement of the release of the hostages scheduled for next Saturday in response to alleged violations of the ceasefire agreement by Israel, the Islamic group has straightened the line.

With a partial backtrack, Hamas clarifies that the door remains open for the exchange of hostages and detainees on Saturday, as envisaged by the agreement for the truce in Gaza. “Hamas intentionally made this announcement (for the postponement of the release of the hostages, ed) five days earlier to give mediators ample time to pressure Israel to keep its commitments. The door remains open for the exchange to take place as planned, once the occupier implements the commitments made”.

A message that arrives after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after a meeting with security chiefs, had made it known that Israel “remains committed to respecting the agreement” clarifying that “all the families of the hostages have been informed” of the latest developments.

Meanwhile, however, the Israeli army has announced that it is “strongly reinforcing the area” around the Gaza Strip, after receiving orders from Defense Minister Israel Katz to be ready “for all scenarios”. “After assessing the situation (…) it was decided to significantly reinforce the area with additional troops for defensive missions,” the statement read. Earlier, Katz had accused Hamas of violating the truce agreement by announcing that it would postpone the next release of Israeli hostages, scheduled for Saturday.

“We will not return to the reality of October 7,” Katz added, referring to the attack two years ago in Israel that led to the launch of Israeli military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“Today Hamas justified its announcement by accusing Israel of violating the terms of the agreement for a truce and Katz branded the group’s decision as a “total violation of the ceasefire”.

And from the far right, the former Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir returns to incite war: “We must go back to war” in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli forces (IDF) should launch a “massive attack”. His party, Otzma Yehudit, left the government, left the coalition in protest at the ceasefire agreement between Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and Hamas.

“Hamas’ announcement – Ben Gvir now writes on X referring to the group’s decision to postpone the release of other Israeli hostages scheduled for next Saturday “indefinitely” – should have a concrete response: a massive attack on Gaza, from land and from the sky, along with the total blockade of humanitarian aid to the Strip, including electricity, fuel and water, and the bombing of the aid that has already arrived and is in the hands of Hamas”. “We must return to war and destroy,” he concludes.

  • Buckingham sends letter to Trump Administration seeking remains of Texas World War II, Korean War hero

Texas Land Commissioner Dr. Dawn Buckingham sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump, the Honorable Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, the Honorable Pete Hegseth, U.S. Secretary of Defense, and other key leaders Feb. 10 calling for a joint investigation by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense to locate and return the remains of World War II and Korean War Veteran Lieutenant Colonel George A. Davis Jr.

This year, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) will open the fifth Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Lubbock, where Davis’ family resides. In honor of his tremendous courage and sacrifice, the GLO plans to commemorate the grand opening of the new cemetery by holding a special interment ceremony for Colonel Davis.

“As Texas Land Commissioner and Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Land Board, I am responsible for serving the brave men and women who have valiantly defended our nation,” Buckingham said in a news release. “Colonel Davis served with incredible distinction, earning multiple military medals while flying during World War II and selflessly made the ultimate sacrifice for his country during the Korean War. I remain determined to help bring him home to rest in Lubbock where his family resides and uphold Texas’s legacy of exceptional Veteran care. After 73 long years, Colonel Davis and his family must be reunited.”

Colonel Davis began his incredible military career fighting in World War II after joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in March 1942. In just three years, he flew 266 combat missions, accrued 705 combat hours, and was awarded several medals, including the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and nine Air Medals for acts of heroism.

Colonel Davis commanded the 334th Fire-Interceptor Squadron during the Korean War while training new pilots and flying air-to-air combat missions. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership and extraordinary bravery in combat with an armed force. He became known as the Korean War’s ace of aces.

Colonel Davis was shot down 30 miles south of the Yalu River on February 10, 1952, while flying his 59th mission and defending a group of F-84 Thunderjets conducting a low-level bombing mission over North Korea. He was declared missing in action and presumed dead. Colonel Davis was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valorous actions.

Currently, controversy and rumors surround the location of Colonel Davis’s remains. It has been reported that the Chinese military recovered Colonel Davis’s body but did not return his remains to the United States. There are additional reports that his dog tag and remains are possibly on display in a Korean War Museum in Mainland China.

Regarding this critical situation, Commissioner Buckingham stated in her letter:

“These rumors are extremely problematic, and if true, the flagrant disrespect shown to Colonel Davis is unacceptable. I’m calling on the United States to use all diplomatic means to demand the Chinese government permit United States investigators to explore the validity of these claims immediately […] Please help the loved ones of Lieutenant Colonel Davis finally find closure and allow us to provide him a dignified resting place where the free men and women of our country can pay their respects to a hero who defended the freedoms we hold dear.”

  • Secret anti-Trump resistance plan signed by 22 blue states

A new document obtained by The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project reveals a secret resistance plan agreement between 22 blue states, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco following President Donald Trump’s election landslide in November.

In a Monday statement on X, formerly Twitter, the Oversight Project announced, “We have obtained a secret agreement between 22 blue states, DC, and San Francisco, signed beginning on November 8, 2024. This agreement, just 3 days after President Trump’s landslide election win, shows that these resistance actors began, as a matter of absolute urgent top priority, plotting their resistance to President Trump’s anticipated actions to end birthright citizenship.”

Following his inauguration on January 20, Trump signed an executive order to end birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants in the United States. The 47th president argued that the Fourteenth Amendment excludes birthright citizenship privileges from individuals “who were born in the United States but not ‘subject to the jurisdiction thereof.’”

The Associated Press reported that Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship has been blocked by judges in New Hampshire, Washington, and Maryland.

According to the secret agreement made following Trump’s election victory, the attorneys general of 22 blue states agreed to work together to resist Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. The 22 blue states agreed in November to “pursue their common interest” by sharing “information, documents, and communications” related to the resistance plan against the incoming president.

The agreement stated, “The Parties have agreed that they have a common interest in developing potential litigation to challenge executive action related to ending or curtailing birthright citizenship.”

As part of the agreement, the 22 blue states agreed to share information that could be used to file complaints, dispositive motions, amicus briefs, merits briefs, and other legal actions.

The secret agreement obtained by the Oversight Project was signed by the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C.

“Despite the mandate from the American People to end the border crisis and return immigration enforcement to the United States, politicians instead acted to frantically preserve their perceived political gains of the Biden Border Crisis,” the Oversight Project wrote in Monday’s statement. “Their top priority was not gas, groceries, public safety, or any other matter of concerns of their citizen constituents, but instead a raw political calculus to ensure that the future children of the illegal aliens that entered during the Biden Border Crisis could turn into voters.”

The Oversight Project added, “Instead of trying to win back American voters, they seek to create new ones to replace them on the back of the worst border crisis in American history.”
