  • Stealing a few minutes of extra sleep via the snooze button seems beneficial, study says

Hitting the snooze button doesn’t hurt, and might even help one wake up, a new study has found.

While use of the snooze button tends to carry negative connotations, a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Sleep Research found otherwise. Lead researcher Tina Sundelin said in a statement, “Those who snooze on average sleep slightly shorter and feel more drowsy in the morning compared to those who never snooze.” However, they found “no negative effects of snoozing on cortisol release, morning tiredness, mood, or sleep quality throughout the night.”

Snoozing for an extra 30 minutes “improved or did not affect performance on cognitive tests directly upon rising compared with an abrupt awakening,” Sundelin and fellow researchers at the University of Stockholm said in the study. “A brief snooze period may thus help alleviate sleep inertia, without substantially disturbing sleep.”

They were even a little more quick-thinking when they did get up, she said.

“For those who usually snooze, it might even be helpful with waking,” Sundelin told NBC News.

In the two-pronged study, researchers looked at snoozing behavior in 1,732 respondents of different ages and walks of life. Tiredness and wanting to awaken slowly rather than be yanked into the day were snoozers’ two main motivations. In all, 69% of the respondents hit snooze or set several alarms at least occasionally, and 60% of those said they usually or always fall asleep between alarms.

Next, 31 regular snoozers spent two nights in a sleep lab, hitting snooze for 30 minutes one morning, and getting up at first alarm the next. Snoozers turned out to be calmer.

“In the snooze condition no one had to wake up from deep sleep, and the snoozers performed a bit better on cognitive tests right upon waking,” the researchers said.

  • UK special forces preparing to aid Israel in efforts rescue Hamas hostages

The UK’s Special Air Squad is preparing to aid Israel in any potential attempt to rescue up to 10 British civilians being held by Hamas in Gaza, Britain’s i newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Several military sources told the newspaper that SAS personnel were working with members of the elite Israeli Sayeret Matkal force and US Delta Force on potential attempts to rescue more than 200 hostages of various nationalities believed to be held by Hamas in hideouts and tunnels.

“It is understood that events in southern Israel have triggered a change in the readiness of UK special forces,” one source told the i.

“An SAS squadron on a training operation had last week finished its detachment several days early as part of unspecified deployment plans,” the source added.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly confirmed on Monday that the government believed as many as 10 British nationals were being held hostage in Gaza.

Only three hostage-rescue missions are believed to have been carried out by UK special forces since 2011, the i reported. They took place in Kenya, Nigeria and Yemen. Six intelligence-gathering deployments took place over the same period of time, including one in Ukraine prior to Russia’s invasion last year.

“The way that Hamas is holding the hostages looks like they’ve scattered them over the territory of Gaza very widely,” Justin Crump, a military veteran and chief executive of security and intelligence group Sibylline, told the newspaper.

He added that Hamas wants to keep the hostages alive and will be giving them food and water, and taking care of their medical needs, because they are considered “bargaining chips” in any negotiations with Israel.

  • US targets Hamas’ financial network, key members with sanctions

The U.S. sanctioned several individuals associated with Hamas’ “secret” investment portfolio as well as two senior members of the organization’s leadership in a move designed to limit the group’s ability to raise funds following its attack on Israel.

Six of the individuals are accused of running an investment portfolio worth hundreds of millions of dollars with companies in Turkey, Algeria, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates and other countries. The network uses front companies to disguise its activities and generates revenue used to support senior Hamas officials, allowing them to live in luxury, Treasury said in a statement Wednesday.

The U.S. also sanctioned two senior members of Hamas’ leadership and a virtual currency exchange based in Gaza. The investments and networks allow Hamas — which is categorized as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and European Union — to raise money independently of the support the group receives from Iran, Treasury said.

“The United States is taking swift and decisive action to target Hamas’s financiers and facilitators following its brutal and unconscionable massacre of Israeli civilians, including children,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement. “We will continue to take all steps necessary to deny Hamas terrorists the ability to raise and use funds to carry out atrocities and terrorize the people of Israel.”

The two senior Hamas members are Muhammad Ahmad ‘Abd Al-Dayim Nasrallah, who Treasury describes as a “longtime Hamas operative based in Qatar with close ties to Iranian elements.” He is accused of transferring tens of millions of dollars to Hamas, including the group’s military wing: the Izz al-Din al-Qassim Brigades.

Ayman Nofal, the second senior member, is a part of the brigades and the commander of military relations for Hamas. He was allegedly killed in an airstrike Tuesday, Treasury said.

The department also sanctioned Buy Cash Money and Money Transfer Company, a virtual currency exchange. A virtual wallet associated with Buy Cash was seized by the Israeli government in June 2021.

    Qatar communication

In a call with reporters, a senior Treasury official said the U.S. been in communication directly with Qatar and all the countries involved in the financial network to go after individuals promoting terrorism in the region.

The official said part of the U.S. goal in going into the region and meeting with Qatari officials and others in the Gulf is to make sure that the U.S. is signaling to them the importance of working in coordination to take out these financial networks as they not only serve as a threat to the U.S. and to Israel but also to their countries as well.

  • Report: North Korea shipping ammunition, weaponry ‘at scale’ to Russia

This article was originally published by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and is reprinted with permission.

orth Korea appears to have begun secretly shipping large amounts of munitions to Russia, according to a new report, using ships and trains to move the weaponry and bolster Moscow’s war against Ukraine.

The report, published on October 16 by the London-based Royal United Services Institute, is based on high-quality satellite imagery surveying ports and train shipments. It adds further evidence to accusations made by the United States and other Western countries that Pyongyang has been helping Russia rebuild its weapons stocks.

More than 18 months into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has already ramped up its military industrial infrastructure, retooling factories and supply lines to bolster production of weapons, ammunition, and other equipment for the war effort in Ukraine.

But Russian forces are believed to have struggled to keep up with the furious rate of fire of some important weaponry, such as artillery shells. This summer, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu traveled to North Korea in what Western officials said was likely a negotiation to acquire armaments from Pyongyang.

Weeks later, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a rare trip abroad, traveling by train to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin and to tour Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome, where satellites and other Russian rocketry are launched.

According to the London institute, known as RUSI, dozens of satellite images taken in recent months appear to show two Russian-flagged cargo ships moving between Rajin, a port on North Korea’s eastern coast and an obscure port in Russia’s Primorye region known as Dunai.

According to RUSI’s account, the ships transported “hundreds of containers” that, the institute said, likely contained North Korean armaments. One of the cargo ships is alleged to have ties to the Russian Defense Ministry, and it, along with a Russian maritime leasing company, were sanctioned by the United States last year.

RUSI said the images also show dozens of shipping containers of the same color and same size arriving weeks later in Tikhoretsk, in Russia’s Krasnodar region, nearly 10,000 kilometers to the west of Primorye. An ammunition depot at Tikhoretsk has been expanded noticeably since August, according to the imagery.

“North Korea’s supplying of significant quantities of munitions to Moscow will have profound consequences for the war in Ukraine,” the report’s authors wrote.

“For the Russians, a major North Korean supply line will alleviate shortages of munitions,” they said. “Ukraine and its supporters will also have to contend with this new reality, potentially escalating their support by providing additional quantities of weapons and munitions to Ukraine’s defenders.”

Last month, White House national-security adviser Jake Sullivan said that U.S. intelligence had been tracking the possibility of North Korea supplying Russia with weapons “for quite some time.”

“And the reason why…there is such an intense effort on the part of Moscow to generate this kind of support from North Korea is that we have continued to squeeze…Russia’s defense industrial base, and they are now going about looking to whatever source they can find for things like artillery ammunition,” Sullivan said in September.

Other researchers have also documented evidence pointing to increased rail traffic between North Korea and Russia following Kim’s visit to Russia.

“The level of rail traffic is far greater than what [has been] observed at the facility during the past five years, even compared to pre-Covid-19 levels,” the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies said in a report released earlier this month.

“Given that Kim and Putin discussed some military exchanges and cooperation at their recent summit, the dramatic increase in rail traffic likely indicates North Korea’s supply of arms and munitions to Russia.”

  • Biden admin issues ‘worldwide caution’ travel advisory

The U.S. State Department issued a “worldwide caution” travel advisory on Thursday.

“Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution,” the advisory states.

The State Department urged Americans to:

    • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
    • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
    • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.

The advisory comes nearly two weeks after Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, killing 1,300 people, including Americans, and wounding thousands more. The terrorist attacks triggered a declaration of war from Israel.

The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Christopher Wray, also warned there is a rising number of terrorist threats in the United States in the wake of the Hamas terrorist attacks.

“In this heightened environment, there’s no question we’re seeing an increase in reported threats and we’ve got to be on the lookout, especially for lone actors who make take inspiration from recent events to commit violence of their own,” Wray said during a speech at the International Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference last weekend.

“So I’d encourage you to stay vigilant, because as the first line of defense protecting our communities, you’re often the first to see the signs that someone may be mobilizing to violence. I’d also ask you to continue sharing any intelligence or observations you may have, and on our end, we’re committed to doing the same so that together we can safeguard our communities,” Wray added.

Wray’s warning came one day after a former leader and founding member of Hamas urged Muslims around the world to engage in a global day of Jihad.

  • Trump leads Biden with swing state voters, survey shows

A recent Bloomberg News and Morning Consult poll shows that “Bidenomics” is not resonating with swing state voters, as President Joe Biden trails former President Donald Trump, largely due to voters’ concerns with the U.S. economy.

The Bloomberg News and Morning Consult poll surveyed 5,023 registered voters earlier this month from Arizona, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, and North Carolina. Based on the survey of voters from the seven crucial swing states, Trump currently leads Biden 47% to 43%, with the poll’s margin of error at only 1%.

According to the poll, 65% of voters who indicated that the economy was the most important issue to them showed disapproval of Biden’s economic policies. Only 26% of registered voters indicated that Biden’s economic policy, Bidenomics, has benefited the economy. Additionally, 51% of voters said the economy was stronger under the Trump administration.

“Right now, Biden is not getting any credit for work he’s done on the economy,” Caroline Bye, vice president of Morning Consult and a pollster for the survey, stated. “Almost twice as many voters in the swing states are saying that Bidenomics is bad for the economy, as opposed to good for the economy, which is a really startling fact if you’re the Biden campaign.”

According to Bloomberg, 49% of voters indicated they would trust Trump on the issue of the economy, compared to 35% of voters who indicated they would trust Biden. The poll also found that Trump has a 22-point advantage over Biden among independent voters regarding the issue of who to trust on the economy.

Based on the recent poll, Trump also leads Biden in five of the seven swing states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, and Georgia.

In a statement to Axios, Kevin Munoz, a Biden campaign spokesperson, said, “Predictions more than a year out tend to look a little different a year later.” He added, “We’ll win in 2024 by putting our heads down and doing the work, not by fretting about a poll.”

  • US Navy ship intercepts missiles in Middle East: Report

The USS Carney, a U.S. Navy warship located near the coast of Yemen in the Middle East, intercepted multiple missiles Thursday, according to two U.S. officials.

This is breaking news that will be updated as more information becomes available. Keep reading below.

The anonymous U.S. officials told CNN that the missiles were fired by the Houthis, an Iranian-backed group previously designated by the United States as a terrorist organization. The Houthis are currently involved in a conflict in Yemen.

One of the U.S. officials noted that roughly two or three missiles were intercepted; however, the officials said it was not clear what the intended target was of the missiles.

According to a post on X by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, which showed photos of the USS Carney transiting the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on Wednesday, the guided-missile destroyer has been deployed to the Middle East region “to help ensure maritime security & stability in regional waters.”

The interception of missiles near the coast of Yemen is the latest incident in the Middle East, which has witnessed a significant increase in tension since the Hamas terrorist attacks launched against Israel earlier this month. Both Hamas and the Houthis are supported by Iran.

Previously, a Wednesday press release by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) noted that the U.S. military had intercepted attack drones that had targeted an Iraqi air base housing American troops.

“In the last 24 hours, the U.S. military defended against three drones near U.S. and Coalition forces in Iraq. In western Iraq, U.S. forces engaged two drones, destroying one and damaging the second, resulting in minor injuries to Coalition forces,” the press release stated. “Separately in northern Iraq, U.S. forces engaged and destroyed a drone, resulting in no injuries or damage.  We are continuing to assess the impacts to operations.”

CENTCOM described the current situation in the Middle East as a “moment of heightened alert,” during which the U.S. military is “vigilantly monitoring” Iraq and the surrounding region.

The press release added, “We want to emphasize U.S. forces will defend U.S. and Coalition forces against any threat.”

  • GOP mega-donor, tech icon exposed as FBI informant: Report

Tech magnate Peter Thiel, best known for co-founding PayPal and his role as a Republican mega-donor, secretly served as a “confidential human source” (CHS) for the FBI, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The revelation of Thiel’s role as an FBI informant was unveiled by a recent Business Insider report based on sources close to the tech billionaire.

Peter Thiel, the man behind major Silicon Valley investments and a key player in the cryptocurrency realm, reportedly began working with the FBI in the summer of 2021. Sources told Business Insider that Thiel funneled information to Los Angeles-based FBI agent Johnathan Buma, an expert in probing political corruption and foreign influence campaigns.

The path to Thiel’s role as an FBI informant was reportedly paved by Charles Johnson, an internet troll and long-standing associate of Thiel’s. Johnson shared with Business Insider that he was instrumental in linking Thiel with Agent Buma, a claim backed by another anonymous source familiar with Thiel’s FBI association.

One source indicated to Business Insider that Thiel’s assistance to the FBI emerged in an attempt to distance himself from former President Donald Trump and the broader MAGA movement, as the former president has been vocally critical of federal law-enforcement agencies such as the FBI under the Biden administration.

According to the FBI’s Confidential Human Source Policy Guide, once someone becomes an FBI source, “[They] will be either an ‘FBI source’ or a ‘former FBI source’ and, in turn, his or her conduct or misconduct will reflect upon the FBI.”

The policy guide also stipulates that only people who can provide “valuable information… on a recurring basis” can be given CHS status.

Thiel, as a CHS, was reportedly given a code name and an internal serial number, with the intel he provided being meticulously cross-referenced against other sources.

READ MORE: FBI secretly targeting Trump supporters: Report

Johnson, who also self-identified as an informant for Buma, emphasized to Business Insider that Thiel’s FBI contributions were mostly about foreign interferences in Silicon Valley, and he was told not to report on his connections with Trump or other political figures. Thiel has previously advocated for the FBI to more closely scrutinize Google’s connections with China.

Thiel’s vested interests also appear to intersect with the FBI and other government entities. According to Business Insider, Thiel currently possesses a 10% stake in Palantir, a data firm that has secured contracts worth billions from the federal government, including the FBI. Another of Thiel’s investments, Boldend, positions itself as an American rival to NSO Group, a company whose products have been procured by the FBI.

While Thiel has not yet addressed the revelation of his role as an FBI informant, the discovery has added another layer to his various roles.

  • China now has 500+ nukes, will have 1,000+ by 2030: Pentagon

China currently has more than 500 nuclear warheads and will likely double that number to more than 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030, according to a new Pentagon report released this week.

“DoD estimates that the PRC will probably have over 1,000 operational nuclear warheads by 2030, much of which will be deployed at higher readiness levels and will continue growing its force to 2035 in line with its goal of ensuring PLA modernization is ‘basically complete’ that year, which serves as an important milestone on the road to Xi’s goal of a ‘world class’ military by 2049,” the report states.

A top Defense Department officials warned China’s nuclear power is “on track to exceed previous projections,” according to Politico.

“What they’re doing now, if you compare it to what they were doing about a decade ago, it really far exceeds that in terms of scale and complexity,” said the official, who was granted anonymity to speak ahead of the report’s release. “They’re expanding and investing in their land, sea and air-based nuclear delivery platforms, as well as the infrastructure that’s required to support this quite major expansion of their nuclear forces.”

The White House is working on a face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping in California in November, the Washington Post reported earlier this month.

One administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the meeting is “pretty firm.”

“We’re beginning the process” of planning the meeting, the official added.

Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said the United States and China “are in communication on bilateral engagement and exchange.”

“Both sides,” he added, “need to work in the same direction, clear obstacles and manage differences with concrete actions, and enhance dialogue and expand cooperation in good faith.”

This was a breaking news story. The details were periodically updated as more information became available.

  • Sword poking up from soil leads to discovery of 1,000-year-old Crusader cemetery

When Arthur pulled the sword from the stone, according to legend, he became the rightful king of England. When a local landowner in rural Finland recently pulled a sword from the soil, no one was crowned king — but a major archaeological discovery was made.

The landowner, who lives in Perttel, a small town about 75 miles northwest of Helsinki, spotted the sword in a trench after a bout of rain in August.

Upon examination, the warped, iron weapon turned out to be around 1,000 years old, according to a September news release from the University of Turku.

Assuming the sword wasn’t alone in the ground, archaeologists, who had been alerted to its discovery, scoured the area near where it was found.

Sure enough, they ended up uncovering other blades as well as artifacts, human bones and fragments of possible coffins, university officials said.

Among the more remarkable finds was a rare leather belt decorated with intricately designed pieces of bronze. Articles of clothing belonging to the deceased were also located.

But there wasn’t just one grave, university officials said. At least eight graves were discovered, and it’s likely there are many more, possibly dozens or even as many as 200.

The entire cemetery is believed to date to the Crusader-era, which spanned from 1050–1150 AD.

The Crusades were a series of military campaigns undertaken by Christian monarchies in Europe with the goal of conquering the Holy Land, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Sweden, a Christian kingdom, embarked on its own crusade of Finland and other Baltic territories, according to the book “Crusade and Conversion on the Baltic Frontier 1150 – 1500.”
