  • Akwa-Ibom Ex-governors and their deputies reconcile with Governor Udom Emmanuel

FORMER governors and deputies, including Obong Victor Attah, Godswill Akpabio, Ambassador Etim Okpoyo, Sir Michael Udofia, Patrick Ekpotu and Lady Valarie Ebe have agreed to bury the hatchet and work with Governor Udom Emmanuel in the interest of peace and development of the state.

Speaking under the aegis of the Committee of Former Governors and Deputy Governors of Akwa Ibom State (CFGDGA), the forum’s leader, Attah who was governor between 1999 and 2007 originally opposed the emergence of the incumbent as Akpabio’s successor.

In a statement issued by the ex-leaders in Uyo, they resolved to jettison premodial sentiments and work for the unity, peace and development of the state.

“It is quite a relief that the Supreme Court has at last given a final determination in your favour regarding your election. With this confirmation of your mandate, we bring you our best wishes for a successful and peaceful tenure in office.

“So far, by your demonstration that decorum and not impunity should guide and regulate our affairs, you are already on the right path. By affirming your desire to create employment and engage our people, you have inspired hope. By constantly reiterating your emphasis on industrialisation and not indecent and selective demonstration of patronages to loyalists, you have made a bold statement.”

“Let the task of reconciliation and putting back our people together be considered one of your most urgent tasks ahead, towards achievement of these goals,” the statement read in part.

  • Find Political Solution To Cross River, Akwa Ibom Oil Wells Issue, CRUTECH Alumni President Tells FG

The National President of Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Alumni Association, Eyam Abeng has called on the Federal Government to find a political solution to the lingering oil wells issue between Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.

Abeng who made the call recently in Uyo during the inauguration of the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Alumni, noted that since the 2012 Supreme Court ruling that ceded Cross River’s 76 oil wells to Akwa Ibom, relations between both states has taken a frosty turn.

He lamented that both states no longer relate like sister states but as rivals within the South-South region. He however urged the newly inaugurated chapter executives to use their position to rebuild the soured relationship between the two States.

“After Cross River state which is the host state of our University, Akwa Ibom has produced the highest number of graduates from CRUTECH. This means that a large percentage of the work force in both states are products of CRUTECH but despite this, the relationship between both states collapsed in 2012 after the court ruling that ceded the 76 oil wells to Akwa Ibom.

“This has drastically affected development in both states but to resolve this, I want to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to find a lasting political solution to the issue.

“Although we are a young association, our collective objective must be to rekindle the defoliated relationship between our states. We must begin to see ourselves as formidable forces to take over affairs of our states within the nearest future.

“I have confidence in Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State and Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom state to set a standard for the younger generation of leaders to follow in terms of feasible projects that will enhance robust relationship among their citizens” Abeng said.

  • Ireland to Establish Development Centre in Calabar

The Republic of Ireland has indicated its preparedness to partner Nigeria, using Cross River State as the pilot state, to ensure it attains socio-economic and infrastructural development.

Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Sean Hoy, disclosed this while on a courtesy call to the Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade.

The Irish government believes this will help address the problem of youth restiveness in the Niger Delta region.

The Ambassador said that  his team are in Calabar to draw a framework of development that involves the state and Federal Government, in a bid to find the way forward in their respective developmental strives, as well as help curb restiveness in the Niger Delta region.

Mr Hoy who also announced the establishment of a development centre in Calabar as part of the initiative, said he had visited Bayelsa and Rivers States before choosing Calabar as the choice location.

Governor Ayade revealed that it is critical to address the restiveness that has characterised the Niger Delta region, saying no development can take place where crisis and tension exist.

He maintained that the crisis and challenges of Niger Delta are unpardonable and no matter how much one has given to a man, liberty is better than slavery.

The Governor also pointed out that the people of the area yearn for redemption, which comes from a philosophical change of attitude, re-orientation and restructuring of issues to ensure equity and fair play.

Ayade further went to commend the Irish government on the choice of Calabar for the development centre, which it intends to run in partnership with the Savannah Centre.
