  • Tinubu’s Daughter – Buhari’s govt neglecting market women

The Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Chief Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, on Thursday, led market women to protest the non-inclusion of market women in the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress administration.

Tinubu-Ojo, who is also the daughter of the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, led several women who converged on the party’s (APC) national secretariat in Abuja.

According to her, it was the opinion of market women of Nigeria that the present administration is not carrying them along even after they worked tirelessly to ensure the party emerged victorious during the 2015 election.

She lamented that ‘after the inauguration, most of us were not carried along’.

Tinubu-Ojo said, “I am here this afternoon to represent the market women and market men of Nigeria. There have been agitations. The people believed that the government of the day is not carrying them along as it should be; that they worked round the clock for the party during the electioneering, but after the inauguration, most of us were not carried along.

“We only hear on the news that the First Lady is doing programme this and that and we just see it on the news and they (market women) wouldn’t allow me be. All the complaints come to my table – morning and night, and I say okay, enough is enough.

“We even heard that another FCT woman leader is organising another market association and named it Association of Organised Market People in Abuja and most of these people are PDP. They were nowhere to be found when we were working for the party day and night.

“Now, our people are not happy because they need to benefit from where they believe they have the right to. All we need, all we are crying for is for the government to give them a sense of belonging and carry them along properly.”

When asked whether her father knew about the agitation, she said, “Because I am the daughter of the National Leader of the APC doesn’t mean that I must not represent my people well. I have to represent my people’s opinion, I am a leader, and as a leader my people are crying foul and I won’t fold my hands and keep quite because my father is a national leader, it is wrong.

“I am not mobilising against the party, no. I am solidly behind the party. I have worked for the party before and I will still work for the party tomorrow, but that does not stop me from saying the truth.”

  • Cross River Representative Tackle Kachukwu Over Unbundling Of NNPC Into 30 Companies

The House of Representatives yesterday condemned the planned unbundling of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, as proposed by the Minister of State for Petroleum and Group Managing Director of the Corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachukwu, this week without following the constitutional process.

It said instead of embarking on an unconstitutional journey, the President should send an executive bill to the National Assembly as soon as possible if he had the intentions to unbundle NNPC or carry out fundamental restructuring or reforms in the oil and gas sector and not for the Minister to usurp its functions.

The resolutions of the House followed the motion sponsored by Hon. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency of Cross River State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, entitled, “Urgent need to investigate acts of procedural breach by the GMD of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.”

Jarigbe in the motion noted that the minister on Thursday, March 3, 2016, was quoted as saying that for the national oil company, a lot of work was going on, adding, “I am sure some of you have seen the effects, but within the next one week, we are going to be announcing some real major overhaul of the system, one that hasn’t been done in over 20 years.”

The lawmaker also stated that the Minister also added that, “The effect of that will be to quite frankly unbundle the huge company into four to five main operational zones, the upstream, downstream, midstream, refining and of course, every other company that is trending to the venture group.”

  • President Buhari – Dasuki must go to jail

President Muhammadu Buhari has again expressed his displeasure at how former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) handled funds meant for purchase of arms under the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

Buhari in an interview with Al Jazeera television aired on Sunday, said the “sharing” of the funds was responsible for the boldness at which the Boko Haram sect operated in recent years.

He was reacting to a question by the interviewer on controversial use of security votes by office holders.

“Why not scrap these votes which end up in opaque destinations?” the interviewer quipped.

Responding, Buhari said while security votes of his office, his deputy’s, and a number of officials in the executive arm had been greatly reduced, plans were on to extend such to states.

“We are trying to recover such used for personal purposes.

“That is why we are prosecuting those who shared monies meant to procure hardware and software for the military.

“It is easy to say we have not recorded a high-profile conviction but there must be court processes.

“However, with the revelations coming out from the arms probe, you can imagine where Dasuki will end up.”

It would be recalled that a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday struck out Dasuki’s application seeking to stop his trial pending his release from detention.

Justice Peter Affen held that the former NSA was unable to prove that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was holding him after he was granted bail.

Affen maintained EFCC did not in any way acted contrary to court order because it did not have Dasuki in its custody.

  • Alcohol consumers to pay tax in Akwa-Ibom State – Akan Okon, Commissioner for Finance

The Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Finance, Mr Akan Okon, said consumption of alcohol in hotels and beer parlours in the state would now attract tax.

Okon told journalists in Uyo on Saturday that people who consumed alcoholic drinks would begin to pay a token as tax.
“Some people who lodge in hotels and consume alcohol will henceforth pay taxes to the state government.
“The focus is to look inward to see how the various opportunities that are available in the state can be harnessed to raise the Internally Generated Revenue(IGR),’’ he said.
The commissioner, however, decried the attitude of some businessmen in the informal sector of the economy who failed to pay tax to government.
Okon said that if those in the informal sector paid their taxes, the state would pull the resources together and that would help in providing social amenities.
He said that property tax and entertainment tax were not collected in the state in order for tax uniformity.
Okon explained that the state government had put measures in place to ensure that revenue opportunities were tapped to raise its IGR.
The commissioner disclosed that a new tax consultant had been appointed to block leakages associated with revenue collection.
“We have in place a new consultant that is working closely to ensure that we block all the leakages associated with revenue collection system in the state.”
The commissioner explained that e-receipt system had been introduced to check revenue leakages.
“We are introducing electronic e-receipt instead of the manual receipt, this is one of the avenues we believe will help sort out some leakages that are associated with a manual receipt,” he said.
Okon said the state government would soon convene a tax summit to rub minds with its stakeholders, adding that the aim was to encourage the people to pay their taxes according to their incomes.
“As a state, we intend to ensure that we widen the tax net and also engage the informal sector to ensure that we derive the maximum opportunity that is available in this area.
“With the summit coming up, the issue of poor tax payment will be a thing of the past,” Okon said.
He noted that the state government would anchor its development on taxes paid by the citizens.
The commissioner said Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration was doing everything possible for tax system to be efficient and effective. (NAN)
