  • Benue State Governor Ortom meets Army Chiefs over #Agatu Killings

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has expressed confidence in the current security measures by the Federal and State Governments to prevent further clashes between herders and farmers in Agatu and other parts of the state.

Governor Ortom who spoke shortly after he met with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai who was in Benue State inl continuation of ongoing efforts to end the crisis, said surveillance by military and mobile policemen had intensified in the areas affected by the crisis.

He said the Chief of Army Staff had assured him that more troops will be deployed to the state to complement the ones already on ground, if the need arises, disclosing that security had also been beefed up in the waterways within and around the state.

Governor Ortom commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the prompt intervention to bring an end to the killings, describing the invasion of the state by herdsmen as unwarranted.

“Mr President has proven that he is the father to all with his quick approval for the deployment of more troops to Agatu and other areas affected by the crisis. The killing of our people by herders is unjustifiable and I expect every Nigerian to rise in condemnation of this act,” he stated.

He said farming remains the main occupation of the people of the state which has earned it the status of Food Basket of the Nation, stressing that anything capable of depriving the people of their farm lands must be condemned by all Nigerians.

Governor Ortom advised the people of Benue not to take the law into their hands, remain peaceful and report trespasses on their land to security agencies.

In the meantime, the Benue State Government has, through the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, sent additional relief materials and medical assistance to the camps of persons displaced by the crisis.

  • Nigeria! Senate postpones passage of 2016 Budget again

Senator Danjuma Goje led Joint Committee on Appropriations, on Wednesday failed to submit the report on the 2016 Budget thus forcing the National Assembly to once again postpone its passage.

It has now been moved from Thursday, (tomorrow) to next week.
The Joint Appropriation Committees of the National Assembly had, in a press briefing last two weeks, assured Nigerians that based on their timetable, the report will be presented at both chambers yesterday, while the consideration and passage of the Appropriation Bill will take place today, Wednesday.
But during Wednesday’s plenary, there was no mention of the 2016 budget both in the Senate Order Paper and also during the plenary session.
However, the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, who spoke to journalists after the plenary session, said the passage of the budget will be next week, even as he said the report of Joint Appropriation Committee will be laid before the Senate on Thursday, 17th March, 2016.
He said the National Assembly will deliberate on the report on Tuesday next week, while the Bill will be passed Wednesday, adding that the National Assembly will forward the Bill back to President Mohammadu Buhari for assent before the lawmakers vacate for Easter break.
Addressing journalists on the same issue, the Senate Spokesman, Abdulahi Sabi (APC Niger North) corroborated what the Senate leader said, by assuring that all was set for the laying of the Bill on Thursday.
According to him, “all is almost set for the laying of the 2016 budget on Thursday in the Senate chamber as we have promised Nigerians and with that, one or two processes that are required will take place and we will have our budget as promised.
“This has put to rest any suspicion of what is happening. I am here to inform you that tomorrow 17th, God sparing our lives, the 2016 budget would be laid by the Chairman of the Appropriation Committee”, Sabi added.
“We are laying the budget tomorrow, that means that every little work that needed to be done with respect to getting that budget as an appropriation law has been done. We will discuss it, by taking it clause by clause and give it the loud voice that would proclaim its passage.
“When a target is set, it is to allow you to work very hard to achieve the target. By virtue of the fact that the budget would be laid tomorrow, it shows that we had worked so hard to get to that point.
“The rest after laying the budget is merely administrative. As far as we are concerned, in line with the legislative procedure, by laying the budget tomorrow, it is as good as we have passed the budget.
“What remains is for us to go through one or two things as a procedure. We have done very well by ensuring that the budget would be laid tomorrow. There are lots of back and forth with respect to the budget.
“We are not unmindful about the date set for the passage, but we want to give Nigerians a budget that is acceptable, implementable, and that will actually drive the key policies of this government with respect to the change agenda”, he added.
He also explained that for the budget to be laid, it means that there was concurrence, and that all members of the appropriation committee were satisfied, including everybody that had a responsibility to the budget.

  • Governor Wike declares Thursday, Friday as work-free days – Rivers Re-run

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared Thursday and Friday as work free days in the state for the smooth conduct of the rerun legislative elections on Saturday, March 19, 2016.

He stated that the work free days will enable workers in both private and public sectors fully participate in the re-run polls.

The governor also stated that he believes that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will conduct free, fair and credible rerun elections from the assurances he received from the commission.

In a state-wide broadcast on Wednesday, Governor Wike said : ” I hereby declare Thursday, March 17th and Friday, March 18th 2016 as work free days in Rivers State to enable workers from the public and private sectors fully participate in the re-run elections and exercise their franchise. He stated that security agencies have definite instructions to enforce the restrictions on human and vehicular movements on election day.

The governor directed the security agencies to : “arrest any person or group of persons, including government vehicles, that violate this order and or attempt to act in any way to undermine the peaceful conduct of the re-run elections in the State. ”

While urging the people of the state to turn out in their number to participate in the elections, Governor Wike noted that he had been assured by the armed forces that they will not deviate from their constitutional role of safeguarding law and order before, during and after the elections.

He said : “In line with the ongoing security operations to rid the state of cult-induced violence and criminality, I have requested the armed forces to increase security surveillance around some identified flashpoints of cultism and banditry in Abua/Odual, Andoni, Akuku Toru, Ahoada-East, Ahoada-West, Emohua, Ikwerre, Opobo/Nkoro, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas of the State.

“There is really nothing to fear for every law-abiding citizen of the State while exercising our right to vote. On the Election Day, simply take your permanent voters cards (PVC), walk to your polling units to be accredited, peacefully cast your vote and, wait at a reasonable distance as allowed by law until the results are counted, announced and documented.

“Do not submit to any intimidation by those who seek to scare you away from voting with the military. Take note that no person is allowed to go to the voting areas with uniform security personnel or thugs.”

He urged the people of the state to take advantage of the court-ordered rerun elections to exercise their democratic rights to vote candidates of their choice.

He said : “You will also be electing worthy representatives to the State House of Assembly to join me to deliver our developmental agenda and help chart the future of our State through effective legislation and oversight.

“Now that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to conduct the court-ordered National and State Assemblies’ re-run elections in Rivers State, it is incumbent that we take full advantage of the opportunity to, once gain, exercise our democratic rights to vote for the candidates of our choice”.

  • Gov. Ayade – Cross River to become net exporter of banana

The Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade says his administration will soon transform the state into a net exporter of banana.

Ayade disclosed this in Mexico yesterday shortly after inspecting overflowing huge acres of banana farms in that country.

While expressing delight at the decision of some Mexican farmers to partner the state to establish a huge banana farm in the state, the Governor observed that banana production and export will help his administration achieve the objective of diversifying and reconstructing the economy of the state.

“This banana farm and estate you are bringing is a thing we are in a hurry to get started. It is a handshake of deep prosperity,” the Governor stated, adding that while Naira is what is required to cultivate banana, it is sold in Dollars.

Continuing, he said; “this partnership will diversify and reconstruct the economy of Cross River State. The State has the largest and best soil among the few states in Nigeria that grow banana.”

The governor attributed the recent influx of Direct Foreign Investment, FDI, into the state on the peace and security in the state.

“Our hospitable, calmness and peace are critical for our economic growth. The choice of Cross River repeatedly is because of the peace that investors enjoy in the state.
I feel we must love one another and sustain this attitude as this is what gives us added advantage.”

The Governor’s visit to Mexico is a follow-up to an earlier visit paid on him in Calabar by the team of investors led by Mr. Carlos Peniche.

In his remarks, Peniche thanked the Governor for the opportunity given to them to invest in the state, stressing that the partnership would be of tremendous benefit to both parties.

He further revealed that the project will start with the cultivation of about 2000 hectares.
