  • Reps Honour Exceptional Ayodele, A UNILAG Graduate With 5.0

The House of Representatives on Wednesday honoured 29 year-old Ayodele Dada, who graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 5.0 from the University of Lagos.
He received a standing ovation from the House during plenary in honour of his rare academic feat.
In an unprecedented gesture, the House suspended its rules to invite Mr Dada into its hallowed chamber to honour him and commend his remarkable achievement, a tradition usually reserved for visiting presidents and parliamentarians.
Some of the lawmakers said young Dada’s success story, in the face of the challenges in the education sector, is compelling and an inspiration to the Nigerian youth and the country in general. [Channelstv]

  • BREAKING NEWS: Senate passes N6.07 trillion 2016 budget

Following a motion by Senator Danjuma Goje on Wednesday for the passage of 2016 Appropriation of N6.07trillion and seconded by Senator Andy Uba, the Senate having been satisfied with sectoral explanations which show that the nation stands to benefit from the proposal passed the budget into law.

“That the Senate do consider the Report of the Committee on Appropriations on the 2016 Bill,” Goje urged.

While elucidating on the budget, Goje admitted that the budget being the first to be presented by APC-led administration was fraught with irregularities which he described as strange.

He pointed those irregularities to be late presentation by the Executive, inconsistencies by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, inadequacy of revenue to simulate the economy as well as omission on personnel cost.

In his report, Goje recommended that the subsequent budget should be brought to the National Assembly by the Executive in strict compliance with the processes so as to reduce volume of errors and to avoid instances where Ministers will deny knowledge of figures of the affected agencies as presented by the budget office.

He added that government should shore up Capital Expenditure by reducing Recurrent Expenditure for massive infrastructural development of the nation.

“Mr. President, Distinguished Colleagues, at this juncture, I want to recommend that subsequent budget should be brought in strictcompliance with the procedure so that we will not see Ministers denying their own budget before Committee on Appropriations,” Goje added.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, however, expressed fears that omission of personnel which was reflected on the report was fundamental, while urging the Senate for a redress so as not to be misinterpreted as a deliberate attempt by the Senate to withhold salaries of some Ministries.

In his clarification, Goje confirmed that a window has been created by the Committee to mitigate the gap, hence there was nothing to fear by the affected agencies.

“Distinguished Senators, the Joint Appropriation Committee has created a window where funds can be drawn by the federal government to pay staff salaries of those agencies,” he maintained.

In line with the tradition, Senate President reads through the schedule, short and long title while insisting that section 318of the 1999 Constitution of the federal Republic as amended be complied with.

“Distinguished Senators, government must comply with Section 318 of the 1999 Constitution which means the budget runs for 12 Calender months from March and ends in March the preceding year,” Saraki said.

Saraki commended the Committee for a good job done on the budget in view of hiccups inherent in it while urging the full implementation by Executive so that it will support made in Nigeria goods.

He hopes that 2017 Budget would be presented on time.

Meanwhile, in a motion moved by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, asked that the plenary be adjourned till 2.00pm for adoption of voice votes.

  • “As Ill Prejudices Turns Out To Be Fresh Juices” By Emmanuel Idris

Speaking on our governments and politics, it’s always turned out to be a fiery tunnel for the citizenry as more commotion has been treading the hearts of the people; for many, they are scared of the mask worn by their leaders.

You know, if you’d remember the popular saying “one apple spoils the rest“, you’ll take all our leaders to be one, but this same people still said “a tree cannot form a forest”.  I wonder where we have to stand.

This brings us to a sweet piece of work as written by Emmanuel Idris; speaking as he’d examined the achievements of the Hon. Jarigbe’s government since he’s inception, and I was completely astonished by what he’d discovered. In the course of this discourse, you’ll be compelled to agree with him, that Hon. Jarigbe is indeed a Political Messiah. You have to read through though to get the inside out while we still have good leaders irrespective of our reputation.

    1) In less than six(6) months in Office, Hon. Jarigbe employed well over 35 persons (27 Official staff and some domestic staff) from his Constituency.

The aforementioned action greeted a lot of criticisms from even those who were purporting to support him. The doubters maintained that Hon. Jarigbe will be unable to pay the staff he employed.
Three months and counting, Hon. Jarigbe has continued to pay his employees(the economic hardship our country is facing notwithstanding)  This unprecedented sacrifice and exhibition of magnanimity is extremely overwhelming. However, Hon. Jarigbe has continued to endure the discomfort as he continues to squeeze out from his salary to share with his people.

    2) They made all sorts of ridiculous purportions, fabricated all manner of ludicrous allegations, coined the most comic mendacity, but at the end, Light always Conquers darkness.

For a man whom detractors swore on their lives would be humiliated out of the Green Chambers for the ill conceived Prejudices they had of him. For a man who ‘forged’ his certificate, i must say he’s doing better than professors. If certificate(s) forgery makes one so eloquent and outstanding, i beg to plead for all our elected officials to be certificate forgers.

Within 9 months in Office, Hon. Jarigbe has gotten overwhelming recognitions at the National Level. He has continued to keep his Constituency at the spotlight. For a first time rep. to be the one representing a house of 360 persons on many issues, one can only wonder what manner of man he is. Hon. Jarigbe has been on National and Continental Televisions discussing national issues, while representing the House Of Representatives. Most concurrently was his appearance on the NTA, where he represented the house of Representatives on the issue of ‘Unbundling the NNPC’. As usual, his contribution and argument was outstanding.

    3) Many days back, Hon. Jarigbe who has always frowned at the neglect of the younger ones in the political administration (at least in Cross River) distributed writing materials to schools across his Constituency. The smiles on the faces of the pupils /students were heartwarming. They were all very grateful Hon. Jarigbe remembered them.

    4) Did you know not all Hon. Members are representatives? Representation is the Nitty-gritty of being a Hon. Member. Since he got to office, Hon. Jarigbe has remained accessible to his constituents and has always been there to listen to their plea. Hon. Jarigbe has contributed immensely to the everyday running of the House.

    I needn’t say more, need l?

I definitely can’t forget to say THANK YOU HONOURABLE JARIGBE AGOM JARIGBE FOR BEING A REPRESENTATIVE AND NOT JUST A HONOURABLE MEMBER.
