  • Governor Ayade to build beach resort in Calabar before the end of 2016

As part of value addition to the state’s tourism offering, Cross River State governor, Prof Ben Ayade has announced plans to build a beach resort in Calabar.

Speaking during the inspection of Nsidung Beach in Calabar South, the governor disclosed that construction work will start by the second week of September this year.
He said “it is obvious that as Cross River State continues to blaze the trail in tourism, we must develop our waterfronts in such a way that we find maximum value.”

The governor said funding for the project has been secured with a team of investors already setting aside three million dollars for the project.

Governor Ayade said the resort will complement the 2016 Calabar carnival, even as he hinted that a boat regatta could be in this year’s Calabar Festival calender.

Ayade who unveiled a resettlement plan for the residents of the waterfront noted that “I do not believe in the demolition of any property without adequate compensation,” adding, “it could have been any of us in that slum. As such, it is our own responsibility, divinely provided for in God’s own law that you must be your brother’s keeper.”

Announcing the Deputy Governor Prof Ivara Esu as the desk officer for the project, Ayade disclosed that government will provide houses under its social housing scheme, for those that will be relocated from the waterfront.

He said the social housing scheme planned for the slum dwellers will show the sensibility, sensitivity, softness and care expected of a responsible government.
Continuing, the governor said: “Such houses will be given to them at no cost. The theory that there is no free lunch is not true. For us in Cross River State, we do have free lunch.”

Earlier on arriving at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport from Abuja, Governor Ayade had disclosed a  partnership between Calabar and the city of Dortmund in Germany with the sole aim of building houses that are dependent on renewable energy source for the displaced people of Bakassi.

His words: “Having shared the concern of the displaced people of Bakassi who by circumstances have found themselves as refugees in their own ancestral homes, the people of Dortmund think it is imperative to support Nigeria and indeed Cross River State to find a place for the people of Bakassi.”

Ayade also stressed the need for Nigerians to support the government of President Muhammad Buhari especially on the agricultural sector, as a means of getting the country’s economy out of the woods.

  • Governor Ayade’s N25 Billion Federal Roads Intervention: A Fiction or Reality?

The cyberspace was set on a serious discombobulation on Tuesday, August 10 with heated debates by the concerned and illusive Cross Riverians when the news that Cross River State government expended N25 Billion to fix federal roads in the state filtered online.

So many non reactionaries came up with question like if the purported intervention that cost about N25 billion was a fictitious write up by Governor Ben Ayade media aides to keep themselves busy as it’s alleged that they lack what to do or it is a reality.

Currently, the three federal roads in the state, Calabar-Ogoja, Calabar-Itu and Calabar-Ikang are completely deteriorated. In fact, to say it’s bad or deteriorated is an understatement considering the fact that the roads should exist first of all before you can say they are bad not this current situation where there’s no road at all.

What we have in the name of major roads linking the state capital with other parts of the state and neighboring states can not be considered roads in a state that pride itself as tourists destination. They are completely impassable.

This has in no small measure affected economic activities in the state as business men/women now consider other neighboring states like Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Benue etc as more viable destinations for their businesses to thrive.

While research has shown that some if not all of these states have fixed their federal roads from their respective state coffers on agreement of reimbursement by the federal government, the story with Cross River has been different and remained unchanged.

Perhaps, some would use the dwindling federal allocation accrue to the state as an excuse but the achievements of the current Ebonyi state  government in road infrastructure despite earning relatively lower than Cross River would leave a question mark on the quality of leadership in Cross River.

Apart from Ebonyi, down far north, Adamawa state government celebrated the one year anniversary of the current administration with commissioning of about 44 roads. Again, Adamawa earns slightly lower federal allocation than Cross River. The question of leadership come to bare again.

Also, some people have argued that to fix the deplorable federal roads in the state is a sole responsibility of the federal government alone. While I share in their sentiment, I tend to ask if there’s provision for a federal citizen in Nigeria constitution. If there’s non, then it is rapaciously kleptomaniac for anybody to imagine that if the federal government has failed in providing basic infrastructure in the state, the state government should allow it citizenry die like the current situation.

However, while the previous federal administrations showed little or no interest in addressing the challenge of road infrastructure in the state, the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has shown a strong political will to put this challenge to rest. This is evident in the consideration of the Calabar-Itu and Calabar-Mbok among the 31 federal roads that have been earmarked for rehabilitation in the 2016 appropriation bill.

Although, I am yet to get the exact amount budged for the repairs of Calabar-Mbok road, I’m aware that N6 billion was billed for the Calabar-Itu roads.

But the delay in implementation due to the cumbersome procedures adopted by the Buhari administration to ensure transparency as well as the incessant roads accidents suffered by Cross Riverians made the call for the state government’s intervention more serious and necessary.

So when the story that Ayade was intervening after allegedly having to travel himself across six states before getting to his country home in Obudu broke online, Cross Riverians breathed a sigh of relief.

However, few weeks after, another story of the state government expending N25 billion to fix the roads when in essence nothing tangible has been achieved has caused discontent among the people while making the news of the intervention in the first place look as one of the persistent comic shows from the Ayade’s administration.

When the National Vice Chairman (South South) of APC Ntufam Hilliard Etta said that Cross River state have a comedian in place of governor, I thought he was only trying to make jest of the governor because of his love for “shoki” dance and his insatiable desire to excite his audiences with grammar, I didn’t know Ayade was a true comedian in the government house.

If Ayade was not a comedian, how did the state government raised N25 billion within just few weeks that the so called intervention commenced? What is the level of the repairs now that such whopping amount of money has been spent?

Is Ayade and his Commissioner for works working on some invisible roads that Cross Riverians don’t know?
When would Ayade stop his propaganda and face governance? Is the government just making pronouncement without thinking of the implication? How did we get to this level where some government functionaries now see the masses as not being rational enough to know the truth?

Let’s even assume the money was used for the roads repairs as alleged. If six billion was budgeted for Calabar-Itu by the federal government and Ayade has fixed the road from the N25 billion, then we are left with N19 billion for Calabar-Ogoja and Calabar-Ikang. Can anybody, even his media agent say that the Itu road for instance which is one of the roads reported to be under repair by state government in anyway better than it was? Or any of the roads?

From the budget, the Calabar-Itu is to be dualized and Ayade has spent approximately what was budgeted for or even above it from his estimate yet even the tiny existing road is still impassable. What a governor we have in Ayade!

This is hilarious and a dangerous sign that Ayade is out to hoodwink the unsuspecting public into believing that he can use taxpayers money anyhow and tell us anything he likes.

It started when he used 2.7 billion to establish a garment factory that was allegedly awarded to him by the Niger Delta Development Commission when he was a senator for N150 million. Now it’s about spending N25 billion on roads repairs. Who knows what is next inline?

We must collectively demand that Government should explain whether the story of the N25 billion was a fiction or reality because the facts on ground shows the later. If it is real, the state government should give us vivid explanation how the money was spent, the company that handled the contract as well as areas where the roads were repaired.

Anything short of this, will continue to make Ayade very unpopular and cement him as a governor who is in for nothing but to take advantage of every opportunity to loot.

The South-South zone of the Association of Online Media Practitioners of Nigeria (AMPON), a body of online journalists, has urged governors in the region to emulate their Cross River counterpart in the way he has ensured peace in his state.

The association made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its emergency meeting held in Calabar at the weekend.

The association particularly commended Ayade for scaling up security in the state, which has help in curbing the activities of hoodlums in the state.

It would be recalled that just last week, United States of America rated Cross River State as one of very few states in the country with the least crime rate in Nigeria.

Specifically, a travel advisory issued by the US State Department, identified Cross River as only one of two states in the South that are safe for investment and travels.

This came on the heels of a similar rating by the immediate past US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. James Enthwistle who said Cross River was his favourite place in Nigeria.

  • Former Governor Akpabio denies link with Niger Delta Avengers

The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has denied being the sponsor of the militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers or any other militant group for that matter.

A recent online publication had alleged that a splinter group, the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers had claimed Senator Akpabio and other eminent Nigerians were the sponsors of the group.

But a release signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Senate Minority Leader, Mr Anietie Ekong described the publication as “baseless, reckless and senseless. It is a fabrication from the pit of hell from those who are profiteering from the crisis in the Niger Delta and would wish no end to it.”

According to the press statement, “for the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that Senator Akpabio has no link with the Niger Delta Avengers or any other militant group for that matter.

“Contrarily, the position of Senator Akpabio as a foremost advocate of dialogue in resolving the Niger Delta crisis is well known. He is of the strong belief that blowing up pipelines and causing further environmental pollution of the Niger Delta is not in the interest of the region as it would take over 100 years to remediate the effects of such environmental degradation.

“Neither does he believe that economic sabotage at a time of economic recession that the nation is presently passing through can be an answer to the Niger Delta problem.

“His abhorrence of violence in conflict resolution is legendary. Therefore it beats our imagination why anybody in a right frame of mind would contemplate associating his name with militancy and degradation of a region he had laboured so much to build while serving as Governor of Akwa Ibom State between 2007 and 2015.

“Coming from Sahara Reporters, we take it as one in a series of falsehood they have fabricated against Senator Akpabio. We recall the national uproar which followed a similar concoction on December 10, 2015 when Sahara Reporters “authoritatively confirmed” that Senator Akpabio had been sacked from the Senate by an Appeal Court which had not even delivered its judgment at the time of the publication. It turned out to be a hoax when the election of Senator Akpabio was later upheld by the Appeal Court,” the statement said.

It cautioned that politicizing the Niger Delta crisis through propaganda will amount to an ill wind that will blow nobody any good.

“Rather what the nation needs is concerted efforts by stakeholders to holistically through dialogue address the grievances of the region which luckily President Muhammadu Buhari has already started,” it concluded.

  • Cross River State to achieve Universal Health Coverage by December 2016

In a bid to drastically reduce infant and maternal mortality rate  in the state, Cross River Government has set December 2016 date to attain a  Universal Health Coverage for its citizens.

To this end, the state, in collaboration with some donor agencies and in line with the Federal Government’s Policy of establishing a functional health centre in each of the political wards across the country, is embarking on comprehensive renovating and reconstruction of primary health care facilities across the 18 local government areas.

Speaking at the commissioning of one of the facilities in Aningeje, Akamkpa Local Government Area, wife of the governor, Dr Linda Ayade, who was represented by a director in her office, Mrs. Rose Eneji, admonished women to make judicious use of the facility and refrain from patronizing unskilled Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).
This she said will reduce the infant and maternal mortality rate by 75 percent.
Mrs. Ayade who is also the initiator of Mediatrix Development Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization concerned with health of women and children in the state, however, regretted that despite the free health care programme for pregnant women and children under five years in the state, some women still patronize unskilled birth attendants.
She urged all stakeholders to join forces with government in sensitizing the populace on the danger of this practice to change the ugly trend.

She thanked donor agencies operating in the state for their support,  maintaining that  the state will not rest on it oars in ensuring that the citizens, no matter where they live, have access to qualitative health care services while also urging the community to take ownership of the centre to derive maximum benefit.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. (Mrs.) Inyang Asibong, restated that “the state was taking a lead in healthcare delivery at the grassroots level in country being the first to start implementation of the one functional health centre per ward initiative of the Federal Government through massive renovation and reconstruction of health centres across the 18 local government areas.”

She disclosed that the “Aningeje Health Centre was fully equipped with the state-of-the-art facility comparable to any standard clinic in the world in addition to the installation of solar panel that will ensure uninterrupted power supply and a borehole to guarantee constant water supply which she noted are essential components of any standard healthcare facility .”

Also speaking, the Director General, Cross River State Primary HealthCare Development Agency, Dr. (Mrs.) Beta Edu, who described the event as a dream come true recalled: “A few months ago, we had the boost of the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, when she physically commissioned two of our health posts in Ikom Local Government Area during the launch of her pet project’ “Future Assured”, and today with the commissioning of the facility, the Governor, Professor Ben Ayade has proved to the world that Cross River State will continue to take the lead as it concerns Primary Health Care delivery in Nigeria.”

To ensure that women patronize the facility, Beta disclosed that “We have instituted an incentive for TBAs to make referrals to all our clinics to patronize health facilities across the state.

Continuing, she stressed: “Our intention is to allow TBAs play referral roles as we gradually persuade our women from patronizing untrained birth attendants coupled with the enforcement of our regulations that forbid unskilled TBAs in churches and other homes from doing any form of child delivery in their domain.

“All our facilities are complemented with trained health professionals and their capacities now built on how to be more receptive to their host community who will in turn patronize the facilities by forsaking other unhygienic and dead centres. And as we speak, the results are tremendous because we have more people using our facilities across the state.”

The DG averred that “With this incentives being introduced, couple with our aggressive advocacy and community mobilization programmes that are ongoing, we are poised and very determined like never before to achieve 15 percent Universal Health Courage (UHC) in the state.”

In his remarks, representative of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Cross River sub-office, Dr. Yakubu Aliyu, said: “We have invested approximately 50, 000 USD to ensure that this facility meets the aspirations of the people.”

He noted that the facility was renovated with the aim of improving access to emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) in line with the Federal Government policy of one functional PHC per ward and urged the community to take ownership of the facility as well as ensure adequate utilization of the services offered by the government.
