    Celebrate you as we do.

I know I’ve told you once or twice
That I think you could be nice.
A friend like you is hard to find,
I think that you can be kind.

    You brought brighter days

  • Understanding Governor Bassey Otu’s People First Mantra And The Economic Importance Of The Bakassi Deep Seaport Port

Understanding Governor Bassey Otu’s People First Mantra And The Economic Importance Of The Bakassi Deep Seaport Port

    By Edem Darlington

On May 29, 2023, when the current Governor  Bassey Edet Otu took over office as the fourth democratically elected governor of Cross River State in the current fourth republic, expectations were high and the yearnings of Cross Riverians were almost felt.

Governor Bassey Otu arrived at the rostrum of leadership of the state with a burden of over 4.5 million Cross Riverians who at the time, had lost hope in public governance, it became pertinent for citizens to be reassured to have faith in public governance and importantly,,  the need for the self worth and value of  Cross Riverians to be raised. The governor understood the challenges and promptly came up with the now popular “People First” Mantra

The mantra meant that once again, citizens could have confidence in the government, it meant that government was ready to make the welfare and well-being of citizens a priority, it meant that the value and self worth of citizens will be considered in all decisions of government and above all, it meant that the governor was going to put the people first in all his consideration, including his programs and policies. Little wonder  why  during his inaugural speech, Governor Bassey Edet Otu had openly committed ” Dear Cross Riverians, I commit to you and my God, to at all times, put you first in all my considerations “

About a year and six months after his swearing-in, , the governor has proven that he is a man of his words. His programs and policies have so far shown that the people are his priority. For example, he came in to meet a backlog of unpaid gratuity of pensioners of over 10 years running into several billions of naira. Today, several of our pensioners are smiling to the bank to get their reward after many years of sacrifice and service to the state.

In the area of infrastructure including the provision of basic amenities good roads, access to basic healthcare facilities, security of lives and properties etc, the governor has performed incredibly well. Only last year, the governor, through the State ministry of education,  facilitated the payment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for over 11,000 secondary school students of Cross River origin amounting to over  N400 million . If all these are not putting the People First, I wonder what it is.

Recently, the governor was able to secure about $3.5 billion funding for the Bakassi Deep Seaport. It is important to emphasize that this is about the first funding facility that the African financial giant  AFREXIM bank would put out for a sub-national. What this means is that the integrity, policy and programs, including the obvious  financial prudence of governor Bassey Edet Otu has been tested, tried and proven to be genuine by one of the global financial financiers and advisors.

The economic implications of this laudable initiative is that, the state will become a powerful player in the maritime  sub-sector of Nigeria with an open market in  the  southern -south and south east of Nigeria, Including mopping up the financial benefits around the entire maritime business in the Lake Chad basin, and the Gulf of Guinea. Apart from the main transaction of major key players in the maritime  sector, the massive value-chain, such business comes with, cannot be quantified. The completion and eventual take-off of business activities at the Bakassi Deep Seaport will see the emergence of several other businesses like, fabrication industries, boat maintenance  and repair services, supply of all kind of goods and services etc

Governor Bassey Otu is no doubt, a visionary leader, who is indeed determined to put the people first in all that he does. One can only pray that his visions and policies will be massively supported by the government at the center in order to bring about the much needed prosperity of citizens.

  • Op-ed: Senator Owan-Enoh Still a Pivotal Minister, Calls for Celebration

Op-ed: Senator Owan-Enoh Still a Pivotal Minister, Calls for Celebration

…Tinubu bid to industrialize the southern region

    By David Peter

In pursuit of President Bola Tinubu’s economic guidelines to downsize his administration for an effective pursuance cost, The President scrapped two ministries viz; the Ministry of Sports Development alongside the Ministry of Niger Delta.

The Wednesday decision followed the 19th meeting of the Federal Executive Council at the State House, Abuja.

However, Senator John Owan’s redeployment to serve as a State Minister in the Ministry of Trade and Investment [Industry] has been glimpsed as controversial among elites and goodwill advocates who desire the ex-sports Minister not to have become a subordinate Minister.

Hence, it’s of essence to clarify that the distinguished senator, still stands tall as a Minister. His designated portfolio in the Ministry of Trade and Investment [Industry]; Owan is assigned to spearhead the Industrial sector in the country, while Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, the Minister of Trade and Investment, is charged with regulating the Trade and Investment sector, also heads the Ministry.

Nevertheless, Senator Owan still doubles as a subordinate to support the Trade and Investment Minister, Dr. Jumoke, in her absence; more so, Owan is expected to assist and perform other functions in the Trade and Investment of the Ministry as assigned by the minister.

President Tinubu’s shake-up policy should be a call for celebration in the southern Region for bringing the industrial sector closer to them, particularly Cross River State, which has been predominantly a State of Public Service. Rather than tweaking its restructuring as a political downplay to the southerners.

The president’s proclivity to make Cross River an industrial hub ought to be a joyful occasion for special festivities to mark a new era of industrial revolution that has been launched in the State.

It’s worth noting that, the President’s decision to scrap the Ministry of Sports is in line with his renewed hope policies to reflect his administration’s economy and reduce the cost of governance for the betterment of Nigerian citizens.

US Election: 8 Reasons Why Americans Should Vote For Trump, Obiano

    By Ovat Abeng

A senior lecturer with the Taraba State University Jalingo, Nigeria, Emmanuel C. Obiano. (PhD), has compelled seven reasons why Americans should vote for Mr. Donald Trump in the forthcoming November 5th, 2024 Presidential election.

Obiano states his reasons in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists in Awka on Tuesday.

According to him, “If TRUMP wins, America’s National Interest will receive priority attention, with increasing economic growth and expanded employment for Americans.

“If TRUMP wins, China’s threat of overtaking, displacing, intimidating and humiliating the Unite States will be halted.

“As at October 6, 2024, COVID-19 has killed 1.2 million Americans and 7.1 million global citizens, and still counting. These are avoidable deaths. The next planned Pandemic will be more disastrous. If TRUMP wins, this next planned Pandemic will be aborted.

“Only few honest but tough strategic decisions need to be taken to end the Russia-Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas wars. If TRUMP wins, both wars will cease. He said so.

“Rising spate of terrorism, globally, is unacceptable. If TRUMP wins, terrorism will de-escalate.

“The rising spate of trafficking in drugs, humans and human parts is unacceptable. If TRUMP wins, trafficking in drugs, humans, human parts and other related offences will decline.

“The greatest problems faced by Developing Countries of the South are political manipulation of their leaders and subversion of their economies by the North through alliances, treaties, plans, policies, terms and ‘conditions’ that actually “castrate’ these developing countries. The resulting poor economies and the poverty they foist on citizens instigate migration. If TRUMP wins, our global multilateral institutions (including the ‘Brentton Woods’ and ‘Paris’ Agencies) will be more equitable, the ‘stranglehold’ on developing countries will loosen and these developing countries will breathe fresh air.”

TRANSACTIONAL POLITICS IN AKAMKPA APC AND THE ALLEGED SURREPTITIOUS PLOY TO IMPOSE AN UNMASK ASPIRANT FROM IKO WARD AS CHAIRPERSON/CHAIRMAN OF AKAMKPA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA: A PASSIONATE APPEAL FOR HELP

    His Excellency,
    Ntufam Prince Bassey Edet Otu
    Governor of Cross River State
    Governor’s Office,
    Calabar, Cross River State.

    Date: October 14, 2024

    Your Excellency, sir

We, the undersigned concerned citizens and indigenes of Akamkpa Local Government, formally appeal to you to abort and avert the planned alteration of the political zoning arrangement in Akamkpa Local Government Area, specifically concerning the zoning of the chairmanship position and the alleged imposition of a woman from Iko Ward in what we believe to be a grave compromise of fairness, justice, and equity. This action is capable of imploding our esteemed Party and repeating the dark political history of Akamkpa. This action, which is said to involve the sum of 50 million Naira in an alleged deal orchestrated by the enemies of zoning, fairness equity, and good conscience, is deeply disturbing and concerning to ALL men of good conscience.

Background and Historical Context of Zoning in Akamkpa

Akamkpa Local Government Area, since its creation in 1976, has witnessed significant political and administrative changes, but one issue has remained glaring: the marginalization of AWI Ward in leadership positions, particularly the chairmanship of the local government. The essence of political zoning, especially in a diverse and multi-ethnic society such as Akamkpa, is to promote fairness, balance, and inclusivity, ensuring that no community or ward is sidelined in the allocation of leadership roles. Zoning is not just a political strategy—it is a tool for social justice.

However, it is disheartening to note that AWI Ward has not had the opportunity to produce the Local Government Chairman in its 50 years of existence. This stands in stark contrast to other wards in Akamkpa who have been repeatedly represented at various levels of government—Federal, State, and Local Government. The repeated exclusion of AWI Ward in this regard is a clear violation of the principles of equity and fairness that should guide the governance of Akamkpa.

The zoning arrangement of Akamkpa Local Government is designed to rotate leadership between Constituency 1 and Constituency 2, with the last tenure having been completed by Constituency 2. It is now the turn of Constituency 1, which comprises the wards of Akamkpa Urban, AWI, Mbarakom, Iko, and Uyanga. Given the historical political imbalances, it is only just that the chairmanship should rotate to AWI Ward, the most marginalized ward, and allow its people the opportunity to participate fully in governance.

    IKPAI WARD
    1. Hon. Denise Nkiri (Elected)

    EKU WARD
    1. Ntufam Innocent Ntuyang  –  Chairman (Caretaker)

Above is the fact of the history of marginalization of Awi Ward in AKAMKPA I, where the chairmanship position is zoned to. Again, even for other elective offices like the House of Assembly and appointive positions, Awi Ward still weeps while the other 4 wards of Akamkpa Urban, Uyanga, Mbarakom and Iko have fared better in all ramifications. The records are there to show. The case of Awi Ward is really pathetic, and we need help.

The Alleged 50 Million Naira Transaction

It has come to our attention that a move is underway to alter this long-established zoning agreement, with a plan to install a woman from Iko Ward in exchange for an alleged sum of 50 million Naira This transaction, if true, is not only an affront to the principles of justice and equity but also a blatant attempt to perpetuate political and social inequities in Akamkpa.

The people of AWI Ward, who have suffered decades of political neglect, will not sit idly by while political leaders from outside their community make decisions that continue to marginalize them. We believe this arrangement—if allowed to proceed—will undermine the trust of the people in the democratic process and further entrench a culture of political manipulation and exclusion.

    Call for Action

We respectfully urge you, His Excellency, to intervene and prevent this unlawful alteration of zoning in Akamkpa. The people of AWI Ward have waited far too long for an opportunity to take their rightful place in the political leadership of Akamkpa. Denying them this chance—particularly through the actions described above—would be a grave injustice that threatens the very fabric of our democratic values.

AWI Ward has long been marginalized, and its people have suffered the consequences of this exclusion. It is now time for corrective action to be taken. We call on you to ensure that:

    1. The zoning of the Chairmanship position in Akamkpa Local Government Area is upheld as originally intended, with the next chairmanship term going to Constituency 1, which includes AWI Ward.

    2. The political process in Akamkpa remains transparent, fair, and free from corrupt practices, including the alleged 50 million Naira transaction.

    3. All efforts to impose leadership from outside AWI Ward be stopped and that any individual or group attempting to manipulate the political system for personal or partisan gain be held accountable.

    Conclusion

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. The continued marginalization of AWI Ward is not only a denial of their rights but a threat to the unity and progress of Akamkpa as a whole. As the governor of our great state, we implore you to act in the best interest of all the people of Akamkpa and, by extension, the state of Cross River. Allow AWI Ward to finally take its rightful place in the leadership of Akamkpa and restore fairness and equity to our political system.

We trust that Your Excellency will give this matter the urgent and serious attention it deserves.

    Sincerely,
    Mr Ekam Ntem

For The Concerned Citizens of Akamkpa.

This petition is presented as a united voice of those who seek justice, fairness, and equity in Akamkpa Local Government and the broader Cross River State political landscape.
