Opinion: As THISDAY Honors Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Cross River South Anticipates a Flourishing Future

    By Archibong Hashbury

“Your life’s journey aren’t what matter in the end. It’s the life you’ve lived.”  Abraham Lincoln

Any career advancement requires discipline, perseverance, and the drive to concentrate on and assiduously pursue a goal. In just two years as the Senator representing Cross River South in the 10th NASS Assembly, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong has made a significant impact despite all the challenges.

He continues to accumulate accolades and praises for his outstanding achievements as a first-time lawmaker in the hallowed chamber. Ironically, he has weathered every recurrent storm to become one of the winners of the THISDAY group’s recently announced “Young Global Leaders” award ceremony. An uncommon feat.

Being a born winner in a contest that boasts of the best in politics, technology, music and finance shows the qualities that Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong has since moving from the a highly competitive private sector to the people-oriented public sector.

He is deserving of all the praise for speaking up for Cross River State. Even though it’s a befitting challenge, he has the guts to row the boat. Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong has made repeated pledges to attract more projects to Cross River South, much like the old Oliver Twist saying.

Young people now have an obligation to support Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong and watch as he reciprocate the favor by continuously speaking for the people.

Why there’s increase in failed marriages in the World today – Cardinal Okpalaeke

    By Ovat Abeng

The Bishop of Ekwulobia Catholic Dioceses, His Eminence Peter Ebele Cardinal Okpalaeke, has given parental failure, community failure and failure of the Church as reasons why there’s increased in marriage crashes in the world today.

He said training of children on the ways of God from infantry to the riping staged of getting married remain the only solution to curb what he described as marriage menace.

Cardinal Okpalaeke, disclosed this while speaking to Journalists during the 45th Wedding Anniversary ceremony of Chief Paulinus Nwafor and his wife Lolo Nwafor.

According to him, “marriage should be a thing of joy. To the best of my knowledged, marriages are constantly crashing today because such couple have lost sense of family.

“The crises you are seeing in marriages today, is a reflection of failure; failure of the parents, failure of the community, failure of the Church and other Institutions that are supposed to be a nurturing place or ground for those that would eventually get married. Institutions have failure. Individuals have lost sense of family.  Many of the crashes couples today  were not well prepared before entering into marriage life. Family as domestic Church, somehow has failed.

“Good family provide good husband/wife, provide good Reverend Fathers and Sisters.”

Okpalaeke while admonishing Christians to be followers of Christ, showing love of Christ and living a Christ-like life, also harped on the importance of having good intentions which he noted matter a lot to God, reminding the people to always put God first in their daily activities.

The celebrants, Chief Paulinus Nwafor (aged 85) and his lovely wife, Lolo Nwafor (aged 65), in their unanimous speeches, appreciated God for the gift of being alive to witness the day and expressed satisfaction with what God has bestowed on him and his wife, forty five years.

Also in his appreciation, one of the sons of the family and a serving Priest at the Ekwulobia Catholic Diocese, Rev. Emmanuel Nwafor, said the celebration had become an annual routine in their family to celebrate God’s abundant grace and mercies.

He urged Christian faithful to imbibe the spirit of celebrating their parents while they are still alive.

The event that took place at Chief Nwafor’s compound Ezioko village-Oko, in Orumba North local government area of the State, on Friday, was also grace by the Bishop of Awka Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, Labour Party Chieftain, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, family, friends and other well wishers.

Insecurity: Save Anambra from horrible deaths, Ebube Mounso urges Soludo

    By Ovat Abeng

The Spiritual Director, Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry Uke, Anambra state, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma (A.K.A, Ebube muonso) has urged the state governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo to address the security condition or resign for someone else to address it.

Obimma, in a new year message for the 2025, described the condition of security in Anambra State as horrible, noting that urgent action was needed as people die on daily basis owing to insecurity.

“Insecurity in Anambra State is horrible. And our governor must sit up. He can’t subject the masses to jeopardy. He is the Chief security officer of the State. He can’t be passive. Urgent action must be taken as people are dying everyday. I cannot be silent again. The heaven is not happy. The Holy Spirit is not happy.

“As you can see, people are dying everyday and he is not doing anything. He should do the needful. It is a horrible situation. The situation is getting out of hand. I believe he collects security votes. Let him use it now to address the State security situation. Anambra State is turning to darkness under his administration.

“This is not time of using his media warriors to blow his trumpets. Whatever that worth doing is worth doing well. In all we do, we must remember that judgement day is coming. I do not need anything from him just for him to address the general well-being of the people. As a governor of Anambra State, he must come out because we voted for him to turn Anambra to Dubai as he promised.”

The priest, however, appealed to some prominent individuals in the State to stop waiting for the government and convoke a security summit to proffer lasting solutions to ugly incident.

“Our prominent individuals like Obi Cubana, Obijackson, Val Ozoigbo, Sen. Victor Umeh, Ada Umeoji, Arthur Eze n’ukpo, Flavour, among others are needed in this situation. Weak men run away when there is trouble. But strong men stay alone. They can come together now and contribute resources towards addressing the security situation in the State,” he added.

  • President Tinubu ranked third most corrupt leader in the world

President Tinubu ranked third most corrupt leader in the world

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has been ranked as the third most corrupt leader in the world, according to the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

This ranking came after the OCCRP called for global nominations to highlight individuals advancing criminal activities and worsening poverty.

The OCCRP, which coordinates a network of investigative journalists and activists, revealed that Kenyan President, William Ruto, received the highest number of votes.

Tinubu was listed third, following former Indonesian president, Joko Widodo.

Despite the vote, the main “Person of the Year” title was awarded to Bashar al-Assad, the recently ousted Syrian leader who fled to Russia.

“The judges acknowledge the importance of public interest and outrage at corruption,” organisers at OCCRP stated.

According to People’s Gazette, Tinubu, 72, was allegedly noted for entrenching a regime of corruption in Nigeria.

As governor of Lagos from 1999 to 2003, he amassed significant wealth for himself and his family.

Upon becoming Nigeria’s president in May 2023, Tinubu awarded a multitrillion-naira road project to a company run by his son.

The controversial Abuja-Calabar route project heightened fears of continued corruption.

Additionally, Tinubu’s history as a cocaine dealer in Chicago influenced the nomination process for the OCCRP ranking.

Allegations of certificate forgery also surfaced shortly after his inauguration.

Tinubu has strongly denied all allegations of corruption.

  • The Greatest Gerrymandering In The History of Nigeria

The Greatest Gerrymandering In The History of Nigeria

    By Okoi Obono -Obla

The judgment by the International Court of Justice at The Hague was delivered in October 2002 in favor of the Republic of Cameroon against Nigeria. Consequently, part of the Bakassi peninsula was ceded to the Republic of Cameroon. However, the Federal Republic of Nigeria retained sovereignty over some other parts of the Bakassi peninsula.

In 2007, the Cross River State House of Assembly, instead of carrying out boundary adjustments between Bakassi and Akpabuyo Local Government Areas, purportedly transferred three wards in Akpabuyo Local Government Area, namely Ikang Central, Ikang North, and Ikang South, to Bakassi Local Government Area via a Law known as Law No. 7 of 2007.

However, some Chiefs from Ikang filed a suit in the Federal High Court against the Independent National Electoral Commission challenging the validity of Law No. 7.
The case was fought from the Federal High Court to the Court of Appeal and finally to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In a landmark judgment delivered in February 2018, the Supreme Court of Nigeria held that the power any state House of Assembly has under Section 4(7) of the constitution is to adjust boundaries between local governments within a state for the purposes of development, not for elections. Therefore, INEC cannot be compelled to obey Law No. 7 of Cross River State.

Surprisingly, and contemptuously the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission has flagrantly refused to comply with the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s judgment, which stated that the Cross River State House of Assembly has no power to sever Ikang Central, Ikang North, and Ikang South Wards from Akpabuyo Local Government Area and insert them in Bakassi Local Government Area.

According to INEC official records, there are 10 wards in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area, namely:
    Atimbo East,
    Atimbo West,
    Eneyo,
    Idundu/Anyaganse,
    Ikang Central,
    kang North,
    Ikang South,
    Ikot Edem Odo,
    Ikot Eyo,
    Ikot Nkanda.

Did CROSIEC conduct the November 2, 2024 elections in these ten wards of Akpabuyo, as enumerated above? No.

CROSEIC rather conducted elections in Ikang North, Ikang Central, and Ikang South wards for Bakassi Local Government Area. Consequently, the councilors representing Ikang North, Ikang Central, and Ikang South wards are also representing Bakassi Local Government Area.

What fraud, absurdity, illogicality, and gerrymandering have ever been seen in history!

According to INEC official records, there are Ten Wards in Bakassi Local Government Area, namely:
    Abana,
    Akwa,
    Akpankanye,
    Ambai,
    Amoto,
    Archibong,
    Atai Ema,
    Efut Inwang,
    Ekpot Abia
    Odiong.
Did CROSIEC conduct elections in 2024 in these wards enumerated above? No.
Croseic did not recognize these ten wards in INEC records but rather fraudulently created numerical wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The displaced people of Bakassi LGA were given only 5 councilors out of these ten wards, while the remaining were allotted to people from the Three Ikang wards, namely Ikang North, Ikang South, and Ikang Central!

SEDC: Appointment of APGA member, evidence of Tinubu running all-inclusive govt in Nigeria – Paul Chukwuma

    By Ovat Abeng

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has said that the appointment of Mr. Mark Okoye, a member of the All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA, as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), is an evident that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is running all-inclusive government in Nigeria, irrespective of political, tribe, ethic and region affiliations.

He also said that the appointment of Mr. Okoye and that of Amb. Bianca Ojukwu as the Minister of Foreign Affairs (State), shows that the Southeasterners (Igbos) are equally carry along and not marginalized as being agitated in some quarters.

Chukwuma who is also vying for the governorship election in the state, disclosed this during a media breakfast with Journalists at his country home, Umueri in Anambra East Local Government Area of State on Saturday.

According to him, the duo appointment were based on merit and not political as being celebrated by the APGA supporters nationwide.

“What our working President has just done by appointing this great personality from Anambra State is a true picture that President Tinubu is running a government of the people and not political party. I can authoritively tell you here that APGA members are likely to get more appointments in Tinubu’s administration. At the moment, there is a report that about 50 APGA loyalists are presently hovering around the Presidential villa begging for more appointment and this prove to you that APC is the best and only political party to welcome with in Nigeria.

“My aspiration to governed Anambra State come 2025 is to attract government presence to the state. I will focus more on security and community development projects.”

Sir Chukwuma while commending President Tinubu for the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) and the appointment Mr. Mark Okoye as the CEO of the Commission, urged the people to support the APC and his guber ambition come November 8th, 2025 governorship election in the state.

  • A Call to Accountability: Emeka Woke condemns Fubara’s unfortunate remarks against his benefactor and leadership Missteps

A Call to Accountability: Emeka Woke condemns Fubara’s unfortunate remarks against his benefactor and leadership Missteps

In an alarming display of political naivety, the recent comments made by Governor Sir Siminilayi Fubara at the launch of projects in Ahoada and Etche have ignited outrage among the citizens of Rivers State. Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, Director General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), did not hold back in his rebuke, reminding the governor of the allies who paved his way to power.

“To publicly denigrate those who stood by you is not just shortsighted; it’s a betrayal,” Woke declared. “The Governor’s remarks reveal a troubling pattern of vindictiveness disguised as governance.”

Woke specifically expressed concern over Fubara’s cancellation of contracts with those he labels as “enemies,” despite their proven competence. “What message does that send?” he asked. “To cancel projects not based on performance, but on petty political squabbles, is a dangerous precedent and egregious executive impunity at its worst.”

He pointedly criticized the Governor’s dismissal of vital infrastructure projects by mocking a road constructed in Omuma Local Government Area, labeling it a “Farm Road that leads to nowhere.” “This kind of rhetoric is unbecoming for a Chief Executive,” Woke countered. “How can you belittle essential infrastructure that connects farmers to markets, while simultaneously promising new contracts for road projects to aid transportation? This is hypocrisy draped in ignorance.”

Moreover, Woke took issue with Fubara’s recent jabs at Nigerian youths who leverage social media as a platform for engagement. By referring to a young man as a “Data boy” simply for voicing concerns about poor road quality and project delivery, the Governor has illustrated a profound disconnect from the evolving societal landscape. “Labeling a young citizen attempting to hold you accountable reveals an alarming lack of respect for the voices of the next generation. Rather than dismissing their contributions, our leaders should listen, engage, and learn from them.”

Continuing his critique, Woke addressed Fubara’s lack of respect for his predecessor, Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike. “To ridicule Wike’s work, especially when it provides substantial benefits to the community, is not just factually incorrect but disingenuous. If anything, it shows a failure to acknowledge the foundations laid before you. Your promise of new infrastructure rings hollow when you mock the existing projects that enhance the lives of Rivers people.”  To even give a thought of not executing any project in Wike’s community, if he were a bad person, speaks volumes of the governor’s insidious nature that should be worrisome to the public, particularly those who barely know him. We were all deceived by his pretentious disposition while he served as the Account General of the state, having been promoted above his contemporaries by Wike.

Offering advice to the Governor, Woke emphasized, “It’s clear that maturity in leadership requires more than a title. Understanding the weight of your decisions is crucial; only through prudent governance can you truly represent the people’s interests.”

Woke went on to suggest that, instead of sidelining past allies, Fubara should aspire to unite the state by fostering collaboration and learning from the experiences of those who came before him. “The people are looking to their leaders for integrity and wisdom. A wise leader knows that enduring relationships and mutual respect are vital for effective governance.”

In a poignant conclusion, Woke stated, “We sympathize with the Governor for being thrust into leadership under less-than-ideal circumstances. However, he must realize that leadership is not merely about filling shoes but understanding the nuances of governance. A wise adage reminds us: it is only when a child washes his hands well that he is fit to dine with elders. The Governor must take stock of the speed bumps on his journey.

  • Clement Ebri: A Silent Mentor @72

Clement Ebri: A Silent Mentor @72

    By Rasheed Olanrewaju

If you are 72, healthy and fulfilled, then, there is every reason to be thankful to the Almighty God, for the gift of life is the greatest of all gifts.

The above explains why, at 72, His Excellency, Clement David Ebri,  Governor of Cross River state between 1991 and 1993, is in a celebratory and thankful mood. His Excellency has just attained 72, a huge milestone in our part of the world, where life expectancy has now been mortgaged by excruciating socio-economic challenges that often result in incidences of sudden deaths.

Dr Ebri certainly fits the bill of a special human and a born leader with requisite will power and vision to better the lot of humanity.

His meritorious, dedicated and silent selfless service to humanity has been unmatched and very pleasing not only to the people of Cross River State but Nigeria as a country, no wonder he has over the years been saddled with many national assignments.

Read Also: Cobhams Asuquo asks interesting question about Nigerian leaders as he reacts to video of Edo State Governor struggling to present budget

As he clocks a fulfilling 72 years today, Dr Ebri, remains a reference for all who have encountered him closely.

In the over seven decades of his existence, Dr Ebri has shown himself strong as an epitome of simplicity, a man of sublime disposition to life and the daily challenges it poses, a man who has been able to journey thus with the care for humanity at the core of his life.

Ebri is one Tiger that does not display its Tigerish instincts. The former governor is the perfect Tiger in the Noble Laureate, Wole Soyinka’s widely read quote: “A tiger does not proclaim his tigritude.”

Indeed the life of very special and great people is akin to the wind which is only felt when it moves across space, shaking the trees in the verdant, caressing the soul and body of humans and ultimately reminding mankind of the love and omnipotence of the God, creator of the universe.

Such special people lead very quiet lives, only ever announcing their existence by touching other people’s lives with their humanitarian services.

As Dr Ebri clocks 72, those expecting  a talk of the town, lavish, forget-me- not- birthday bash from the ex-governor, will have to wait for another year because the former governor is not known for vulgar display of flamboyance, particularly now that citizens are assailed by biting socioeconomic crises in the country.

I am sure that those who witnessed or followed his style of governance when he was governor of Cross River state can attest to this.

A few years back, a United States, (US) study by Scott Sanders, a sociology Professor  at Brigham University showed that most productive age in human life is between 60 and 70 years of age; and the second most productive age is between 70 to 80.

At 72, the cerebral,  urbane, detribalised and celebrated politician and elder statesman, Ebri, has attained the first epoch and now marching on to the second.

If you talk about “godfatherism” in Cross River politics, that appellation rightly fits Ebri yet he does not rob it on anyone’s face or wear it like a garment; Ebri remains his humble, unassuming self.

Rudyard Kipling, the renowned English writer and poet, who lived between 1865 and 1936, told humanity in 1910 that “if you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you; if you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat both equally; if you can talk with the crowd and keep your virtue or walk with kings without losing the common touch; yours is the earth and everything that is in it.”

As governor of Cross River state he was instrumental to the rise of many past political leaders in the state and he ensured that he fixed them in various plum political offices.

It was Dr Ebri as governor of Cross River state who identified a youthful Donald Duke and made him Commissioner for Finance. Donald would later become a two-term governor of Cross River.

Similary, Ebri as governor spurned naysayers’ opposition and stuck with his decision to support the young Liyel Imoke to the Senate; Imoke would turn out to become the youngest Senator of that epoch; and in later years, the same Liyel would  become a presidential Adviser, Minister for Power and then a two-term governor of the state.

In the same fashion, Ebri as governor gave Senator Gershom Bassey the desired political lift by appointing him to the Board of Cross River Estates Ltd. Gershom would later rise elegantly in Cross River’s political space to represent Cross River South Senatorial district in the Senate back to back.

The former Governor also brought Professor Ivara Esu to limelight politically when he appointed him Cross River state Commissioner  for Agriculture. Professor Esu would later become the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Minister of State Tourism,Culture and National  Orientation and the immediate past Deputy Governor of Cross River state.

Equally, the former Minister for the Niger Delta, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani was also Ebri’s creation. The then young Usani was Governor Ebri’s Personal Assistant. Even the current governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, received Ebri’s  touch. The list is endless.

It would indeed, appear that mentoring young people and grooming them to greatness comes naturally to Ebri. For example, as a young youth corps member serving at Aiyepe High School, Aiyepe, Odogbolu local government area, Ogun state between 1977 and 1978, Ebri immensely contributed to the youth and human capital development in that part of Ogun state.

An Economist who kicked-started his working career as a journalist and rose to become an Editor with the Cross River state Newspaper Corporation, publishers of the iconic Nigerian Chronicle between  1978-1981, former Governor Ebri is one politician who is not given to ostentation or easily swayed or distracted by the pecks and allure of position or influence.

In a tribute to Clement Ebri when he turned 70 a former  Nigerian Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma Egba (SAN), described the Governor thus: “Clem has always been comfortable but more importantly contented. Clem is deep. He is subtle. He is neither loud nor flamboyant but has unmistakable presence.”

Going down the memory lane, Senator Ndoma-Egba recounts Ebri’s days as Governor: “He had no airs. He did not have the pomposity, arrogance or needless flamboyance of today’s men of power”

The former Senate leader recalled how as a sitting Governor, Ebri often drove himself to his Calabar residence unannounced and was harassed and refused entry by his security man at the gate during one of such visits. The gate man of course, didn’t know or had forgotten that the  visitor was indeed the Governor of the state!

“The few times he came to my house as Governor, he drove himself. I dont remember if he ever had a convoy… infact one day my drunken security man would not let him into my compound…He first calmly introduced himself as Clement Ebri…” Senator Egba recalled.

As a foremost journalist myself, Dr Ebri is also my mentor, father and guardian who at all times would call my attention to any issues of state and national interest.

Our relationship further stepped up when he took me to his mother and introduced the siblings to me (his son), at his country home in Mkpani, Central Cross River state.

He also made me to know those living in the United States of America, and this has made me to have unfettered access to him where ever he is all over the world because I know who to call and at what time.

A renowned Economist with a Second Class Upper Degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, apart from superintending the affairs of Cross River as Governor between 1991 and 1993, Ebri had served the state and Nigeria in different other capacities. For instance, Ebri was elected into the 1989 Constituent Assembly. He once led the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct the party’s primary where the current Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu emerged in a competitive polls in October, 2018.

The former Governor of Cross River State was appointed as the Chairman Advisory Council, All Progressives Congress, (APC), Women Progressive Campaign Team in 2022.

He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the nation’s constitution (1988 1989), Chairman, Presidential Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution (2000-2001), Presidential Committee Chairman, National Bio-technology Development Agency of Nigeria
(2021-2023), member, Cross River State Think Tank (1980), Chairman, Cross River State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation ( 1985-1988),

Chairman, Cross River State Task Force on Books and Stationery for
schools, Director, Mercantile Bank of Nigeria Plc (1988-1990),
Chairman, Croas River State  Amateur Athletics Association (1988-1991),

Also, a young age, Ebri was  Director, Savannah Bank of Nigeria Plc (1989-1991), Chairman, Board of Governors, Community Secondary School, Mkpani ( 1982-1991).

A great grassroots mobilizer and political strategist, under Ebri’s national chairmanship (2008-2009) of a national party, the Progressive People’s Party, PPA, the party gained the control of Imo and Abia states.

As an experienced technocrat, the former governor has continued to lead a successful private firm that focuses on economic consultancy and development, contributing to the economic landscape of Nigeria.

In the course of his public service career, Clement Ebri received a plethora of honours and awards in recognition of his outstanding service to the country and humanity as well as  salutary virtues and sterling performances.

These honours and awards include: the Federal Republic of Nigeria National honour of Commander of the order of the Niger(CON) – 2011, Doctor of Political Science (Honoris Causa),  University of Calabar – 2019,Leadership Award for Contributions to Nation Building by Michael Okpara, Leadership Foundation, 2024 to mention but few.

He has also been recognized by numerous communities within and outside Cross River State for his contributions to regional and national
    development.

It is indeed exhilarating that 72 years ago, the world saw for the first time, the awesome individual that Governor Ebri would turn out to be. As he savours the grace of attaining 72, there is no doubt that every December 11 is Ebri’s special day of gratitude to God for the gift of life.

The birthday boy (Sorry elder stateman!), given his immense achievements these 72 years of salutary, exemplary earthly journey, and the grace and blessings God has graciously bestowed on him, will surely count his age by friends and not by years.

The elder statesman says he counts his life trajectory by smiles, not tears and that he is assuredly grateful to the Almighty as he starts another year.

On this auspicious occasion of Governor Ebri’s 72nd birthday, I celebrate him for the enviable feats he has accomplished as a mentor,  journalist, Economist, humanist, political leader and one of the pathfinders of the modern Cross River.

It is my prayer, and I dare say the prayers of all those enamoured by Governor Ebri’s sense of patriotism, his elegant public service track record, fervent love for Cross River and Nigeria that his latter years be full of vitality and vigour, and that he continues to make available, in whatever form, his wealth of experience for the good of Cross River and Nigeria. Happy birthday, Your Excellency, Sir!
