“Days of the Jackals: A Clarion Call to the Electorates of Cross River North”

    By Dr Paul Udayi

As the political drums begin their thunderous roll towards the 2027 general elections, I, Paul Udayi, find it both a solemn duty and a sacred obligation to speak to my compatriots of Cross River North. We stand once again at the crossroads of destiny, and it is incumbent upon us to rouse ourselves from slumber and face the realities that have long plagued our polity.

We are witnessing what can only be termed the days of the jackals—a season wherein political scavengers, emboldened by years of unmerited entrenchment, roam the landscape with a grotesque sense of entitlement. These political mandarins, having ensconced themselves in the echelons of power for what seems an interminable era, now parade themselves with the hauteur of demi-gods, believing that political office is their birthright and the masses mere serfs at their beck and call.

This lamentable reality must now be met with righteous indignation. We must summon these self-anointed barons to the court of public accountability. The era of political handouts—those paltry alms tossed to the masses with a sneer of condescension—is over. No longer shall we accept the psychological abuse wherein the legitimate expectations of good governance are portrayed as rare favours, dispensed only to the politically loyal or the spiritually broken.

The time has come for a new ethos: henceforth, anyone—especially those seasoned veterans who have fed fat on the commonwealth—aspiring to any office must render a full, detailed, and verifiable account of their stewardship. They must, with unerring precision and incontestable evidence, disclose the quality and quantity of their contributions to the common good. Flowery rhetoric, vague promises, and empty platitudes will no longer suffice to beguile a discerning populace.

I solemnly admonish every citizen: be not seduced by the ephemeral trinkets and tokens that politicians hurl like crumbs before hungry subjects. These so-called “gifts” are nothing but Greek wooden horses, laced with treachery, designed to breach the citadel of our collective wisdom—much like the doomed city of Troy. Such blandishments are a calculated insult to our sensibilities and a means to enthrone the giver as a demi-god, while the people are reduced to vassals.

At this critical juncture, we must rise as sentinels of our own destiny. We must be wiser, more vigilant, and unyieldingly proactive. We must reject the beguiling wiles of seasoned deceivers who come cloaked in ephemeral generosity yet bear no record of genuine service. Let us sharpen our discernment, fortify our collective resolve, and at the appointed hour, use the sacred ballot box as an altar of justice, where betrayal is punished and true stewardship rewarded.

Let it be known far and wide: the days when politicians bestride our land like colossi, unchallenged and unrepentant, are drawing swiftly to a close. A new dawn beckons—a season wherein only those who can account for every iota of their stewardship with integrity and transparency shall be deemed worthy of the people’s trust.

The jackals may roam for a season, but the reckoning is at hand.

Oden Ewa’s Critical Interventions, Growing Influence Reason for Sen. Eteng’s Emergency Awakening – PDP Chieftain Admits

The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Boki Local Government Area, one of the constituent local governments of the Central Senatorial District, Hon. Fabian Okwaji has taken a swipe on the Senator of the Central Senatorial District, describing his new found love for party stakeholders and charity as a desperate attempts to secure goodwill after neglecting the people for over two years and as “Emergency representative awakening”. Hon Fabian said that all this was being motivated by the growing influence of Hon. Oden Ewa, the Commissioner for Special Duties.

The remark which was made by the stakeholder on his personal Facebook page, has drawn up yet again the conversation around the sudden appointments of liaison officers, sudden visit of the Senator to a hospital, and the emergency convergence of party faithfuls.

For Okwajie, the People of Central Senatorial District, have Hon. Oden Ewa to thank, who in his words have filled the gap created by the lacuna of leadership in the Senatorial District over the last years, adding that the people are watching closely with a view at deciphering the antics of self serving politicians who are now jostling to make a show.

In his words; “We, the people of Cross River Central Senatorial District, owe a profound sense of gratitude to Hon. Oden Ewa, the Commissioner for Special Duties, for his commendable efforts in recent times. His visible commitment and grassroots impacts have, without doubt, served as a catalyst prompting Senator Eteng Jonah Williams to recognize the growing urgency in addressing the challenges of ineffective representation within our senatorial district.”

Endorsement of state, federal lawmakers from Yakurr undermines Gov Otu, APC leadership – Group

    By Our Reporter

A political pressure group, Advocates For Good Governance In Central Senatorial District (AGGCSD), has expressed its disapproval of the purported endorsement of some state and federal lawmakers of Yakurr origin for the 2027 general elections.

The group in a statement on Wednesday 23 April, 2025, said the action of those involve in the charade directly challenges and undermines the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River.

    Below is the statement;

ENDORSEMENT OF ELECTED OFFICIALS OTHER THAN THE GOVERNOR AND DEPUTY, IS NULL AND VOID

“Only the Governor and His Deputy are guaranteed a return ticket ” Alphonsus Eba (State Chairman,  APC CRS)

The attention of well meaning party faithfuls and advocates of good governance of Central Senatorial District has been drawn to a purported gathering to endorse elected members of Yakurr origin at both State and Federal levels.

We wish to state categorically that such desperate attempts to secure goodwill is not only laughable but another purid attempt to undermine the Leadership of the All Progressives Congress, Cross River State.

This attempt calculated to deceive party faithfuls goes to show the utter disregard for the party’s position that, only The Governor and His Deputy are guaranteed a return ticket.

This Position was expressly communicated by the State Party Chairman, in his statewide press conference held on the 1st of April, 2025.  A position that was consolidated at the enlarged Caucus meeting held on the 15th of April,  2025 at the HOGIS Royal Hotel, Calabar.

    Quoting the Chairman verbatim;

“In the Politics of Cross River State, we want to use this opportunity to make it widely known. That anybody who aspires to run for any office apart from the Office of the Governor and deputy Governor of the State, those who are already sitting, they have the right to aspire, those who intend to take over those seats from them, also have the right to aspire, and we have not given automatic seats or ticket to anybody, apart from the Governor and Deputy Governor.”

We therefore admonish the Leadership of Yakurr LGA to be wary of such nefarious antics of those who are selfishly seeking to assume Par with their excellencies by ambushing and cajoling the party leaders to extend  such endorsement to themselves.

It is therefore herein stated that any such endorsement is not only null and void but inconsequential and should be completely disregarded. As it defies not just the prevailing reality but seeks to put our LGA in bad light.

We therefore join our voices with those of reason, and statesmen Iike Chief Obono  Obla who have boldly come out to condemn such fictitious endorsement charades.

  • How Gov Bassey Otu Convinced FG to commence work on Calabar section of the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway

How Gov Bassey Otu Convinced FG to commence work on Calabar section of the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway

    By Edem Darlington

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi announced his ministry’s readiness to commence construction at the Calabar section of the Lagos – Calabar Coastal Highway. The minister made the announcement in Lagos during a stakeholders engagement.

A few days before that announcement, Sen. Umahi had confirmed that 30 kilometers of the road, starting from section one would be ready for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu by May 29, 2025.

The coastal highway from the Cross River State axis covers a total of 130km road network, traversing several communities.

Before the modification, the road was supposed to have passed through communities like Ikoneto, Ekpri Adiabo, Ifako Okoyong and the rest.

However, with the current modification on the road, it is expected that it would terminate somewhere around Awi in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The modification may not be unconnected with governor Bassey Otu’s proactiveness   owing majorly to his visionary leadership and determination to end the persistent frustration of Cross Riverians along the Calabar-Itu Road. That determination prompted the governor to begin the Adiabo-Eseku-Ikoneto road from the Tinapa end. Work is currently ongoing at the site and nearing completion.

That singular action led to the achievement of two cardinal things.
First, it proved a point to those who did not want the Calabar -Itu Road to work to have a rethink that Cross River  now has a new leadership that priotizes the welfare of her people

Secondly, determined to ensure that the people of the State were not sidelined in the scheme of things, especially regarding infrastructural projects as important as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road, the governor began very early to engage major stakeholders with the aim of ensuring that the project commenced simultaneously from the Lagos and Calabar ends of the important highway.

On September 22, 2023, while welcoming the Minister of Works in his office in Calabar, Governor Bassey Otu appealed to the federal government on the need to commence the Calabar section of the coastal highway so as to make the progress of work faster as well as create a sense of belonging to the people of the State.

The minister was at the time in the state to inspect the pilot concrete road project along the Calabar-Itu Road.

“Let me commend Mr. President on his landmark project, especially the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway which is soon to begin and at the same time solicit that while work is soon to commence at the Lagos axis, the Calabar section of the road should also be considered so that the work can progress with the speed of light and create employment and business opportunities to our people “ Governor Otu stated.

Not satisfied, the governor intensified efforts with several visits to Abuja, the seat of power, where he engaged with key stakeholders and actively lobbied influential authorities.

Impressed by the governor’s persistence and  love for his people, the President, through the Ministry of Works at a stakeholders meeting in Calabar, announced the approval for the commencement of  work at the Calabar section of the road.

In a rapid response, governor Bassey Otu on January 1,  2024, immediately applauded President Bola Tinubu for his directive to commence work on the Calabar axis of the road as well as approval for construction of Calabar Ebonyi – Benue- Kogi – Nasarawa – Abuja super Highway as the major signature projects of his administration.
In an appreciation letter dated Ist January 2024, Governor Otu observed that section 3A of the project traverses eleven communities in the state with a total length of 130 kilometres, while a portion of the Calabar-Ebonyi- Benue – Kogi – Nasarawa -Abuja Superhighway also fall within Cross River state.

He said the two projects would go a long way to improve the connectivity and accessibility thereby boosting economic activities in the region towards enhancing the living standard of the People. Governor Otu also lauded the president’s dedication to nation Building.

“I most profoundly felicitate Your Excellency for your administrations interventions in the critical sectors of the economy. Thank you for your dedication to nation-building. Please accept, Your Excellency, my highest regards and that of the good people of Cross River State,” the governor concluded.

In June 2024, during the All Progressives Congress (APC), South South regional meeting held in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, Governor Bassey Otu again openly appreciated President Tinubu and pleaded with the federal government to consider commencing work at the Calabar section of the coastal highway in other to give the people of the state a sense of belonging.

Present at the meeting were notable sons and daughters from the region, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, former Deputy Senate President, Omo Agege etc.

The announcement of the eventual flag-off of the Calabar section of the coastal highway scheduled to hold on the 14th of April, 2025 is the climax of efforts by a hard working governor who blends love for his people with effective political lobbying for the overall good of his state.

His competence, effectiveness as well as resourcefulness as a leader of the APC at the national level is never in doubt. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also understands the importance of having a resourceful individual as Governor Bassey Otu as a strategic member of his party and as such, have tried to play politics of inclusivity with all regions of the country.

As the official flag-off of the Calabar axis commences tomorrow, Cross Riverians are expecting that the same effort, consistency and push that the Lagos axis is experiencing will be given to that of the Calabar section.

Congratulations to the people of Cross River and congratulations to governor Bassey Edet Otu, the people first governor.

Opinion: Oden Ewa is well-raised, cultivated, and urbane—a true gentleman

    By Chief Okoi Obono-Obla

I am delighted that Hon. Oden Ewa, the Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, is gaining significant recognition. In addition to his current role, he also serves as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Cross River State Green Economy Council, cementing his status as a rising star in Cross River State.

Hon. Oden Ewa comes from an esteemed background. His father, Professor Ibiang Oden Ewa, is a distinguished academic, and his wife hails from the Cross River Southern Senatorial District. He is well-raised, cultivated, and urbane—a true gentleman.

It’s satisfying to see that his growing influence has unsettled certain vested political interests in the Central Senatorial District. These detractors, reportedly recruiting social media trolls, particularly from Obudu Local Government Area, aim to rattle him. However, Hon. Oden Ewa remains unshaken—steadfast and solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.

Undoubtedly, he is a figure to watch closely as we approach 2027.

    Opinion: Echoes of Oden Ewa

    By Phylo Modlin Odu

What began as whispers about the phenomenal personality of someone with the demeanor of a greenhorn but the performance, competence, and strategy of a seasoned veteran, has transformed into resounding accolades and admiration for the man called Oden Ewa.

It is imperative to mention that Oden Ewa is at the forefront of the elegant renovation of the state library, which had been ruined and abandoned for years. As Commissioner for Special Duties in Governor Otu’s administration, he has proven his mettle in his contribution to the development of the State, and has become an integral factor in the successes of the administration by simply doing his job.

Oden Ewa strikes the chord with people in his spontaneous, boundless acts of generosity and commitment to human capital development demonstrated in his constant outreach to those in need; giving financial support to small business owners, his award of scholarship worth ₦250,000 each to 100 postgraduate students early this year among others. In addition, he has facilitated the enrollment of 1,500 people from Central Senatorial District into the Cross River Health Insurance scheme, and a few days ago, a beneficiary was operated for large uterine fibroid.

He hails from Ugep, Yakurr LGA. He is a shining example of an achiever, as his impressive achievements have demystified the usual underwhelming role of a commissioner in Cross River State. Oden Ewa is youthful, charismatic, smart, and accessible. He is an everybody’s guy.

As the echoes of his accomplishments continue to grow louder, it has become apparent, that Oden Ewa is a source of hope, a rallying point for many, as he has taken over the task of offering succor, particularly, during this challenging period in the political trajectory of Central Senatorial district, where federal representation is lethargic.

Family, friends, associates, Tinkoriko celebrate Rt Hon Orok Duke on PhD conferment

    By Kelvin Obambon

Despite the caliber of individuals that graced the 37th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) on Saturday 22 March, 2025, Rt Hon Orok Duke, the Commissioner representing Cross River State in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) stole the show with panache that cladded it in beauty, elegance and class.

Duke, who was one of those conferred with a doctorate degree, was ubiquitous at the University of Calabar International Conference Center, venue of the event. He was literally the cynosure of eyes because he arguably had the largest number of guests in attendance.

Among those who came to celebrate with him were family members, friends, associates, media practitioners and members of Tinkoriko, a sociocultural group he founded and nurtured for more than three decades ago. The group was led by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Eyo.

While others convoked and left the venue unnoticed at the end of the ceremony, Dr Orok Duke’s departure took the 37th convocation to its crescendo. The Tinkoriko group massing in their hundreds, rolled out the drums to celebrate their own to the admiration of everyone around. They had a procession, walking with their patron from the Conference Center to the Main Gate of the University of Calabar, and then assembled at the Amayo Duke School, Efut, where they were treated to a grand reception.

This elaborate show of solidarity and camaraderie underscores Dr Orok Duke’s immense social capital and his capacity to bring people together for social good. His name resonates very well among youths, especially in Calabar, where Tinkoriko is leveraged to build harmony and ensure peaceful coexistence among youths from various social, cultural and political backgrounds.

His academic achievement is a testament to his insatiable thirst for knowledge, and one cannot help but congratulate him on this milestone.
