  • New docu-series exploring the lives of criminal barristers premieres tonight

Essential viewing for criminal bar hopefuls

A new Channel 4 documentary series, airing tonight, offers viewers a rare glimpse into the criminal bar as it follows barristers from leading chambers handling cases ranging from murder and drug conspiracies to motoring offences.

Barristers: Fighting For Justice follows defence barristers over three episodes, giving viewers an insight into the challenges facing the criminal bar — all while bewigged lawyers prepare for high-stakes trial advocacy. Filmed over four years with “unparalleled access” to the lawyers, Barristers was originally announced as The Defenders in 2021.

The first episode features two barristers from London set 25 Bedford Row — Matthew Radstone and Leon-Nathan Lynch. Radstone’s client is a cab driver accused of transporting £1 million cocaine in an international drugs conspiracy. Lynch, meanwhile, defends a client in an alleged knifepoint carjacking — apparently staged for insurance fraud — all the while his co-accused has a different story.

In future episodes, cases concern a gangland murder, a speeding charge, deportation, a man having bitten another person’s ear off, county lines drugs gangs, and a 15-year-old who is charged with the murder.

Radstone and Lynch are not the only barristers on screen — the series will include barristers from other sets like Great James Street Chambers.

The criminal bar is still facing serious challenges. Financial pressures and mental strain are driving lawyers away, with as many as a third considering leaving the profession altogether.

Documentaries like this aim to offer a rare, insider’s view of the justice system. As Lynch puts it in a LinkedIn post: “If you think it’s not your thing — watch it anyway. You never know when the law might find you wanting…”

Barristers: Fighting for Justice airs its first episode tonight (Tuesday) on Channel 4 at 10pm.

  • Crisis rocks Anambra community over Igweship tussle

Crisis rocks Anambra community over Igweship tussle

    By Ovat Abeng

There is crisis currently rocking Ihite community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State over plan to crown a traditional ruler for the community.

It was gathered that a section of the community loyal to the President General, Mr George Madu plans to crown chief Timothy Ifurunwa as king on Easter Saturday, a move that members of the traditional council of the community has vowed to vehemently reject, describing Ifurunwa as an illegal monarch.

The traditional council of the community, who are the kingmakers has raised the alarm over attempt by the president general of the community, Mr George Madu to crown an alleged illegal monarch for the community.

The council in a petition addressed to governor of the state, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and the State Commissioner of police, CP Ikioye Orutugu said the event if allowed to continue would cause breakdown of law and order in the area.

In the petitions to the duo, which were made available to journalists, the counsel to the traditional council of the community, Barr Ndubuisi Onyeakpa said the coronation ceremony is being planned for April 19, despite the objections of the kingmakers of the community and a pending court suit.

The petitions urged both the governor of Anambra State and the commissioner to intervene to avoid any breech of peace.

Onyeakpa said: “Members of Ihite Traditional Council; Sir Dominic Ahamkaonye, Mr. Ephraim Anudu, Ichie Dennis Ohajekwe and Iche Anthony Okoli were people selected by various villages in Ihite under the leadership of late Igwe B.O. Ofu, Eze Amama I of Ihite as members of Ihite Traditional Council.

“They worked with Igwe B.O. Ofu in settlement causes and matters revolving around tradition, native law and custom of Ihite Town before Igwe B.O. Ofu joined his ancestors in 2020.

“Unfortunately however, after the death of Igwe B.O. Ofu, dispute arose on who will succeed the throne and procedure for the succession. Sequel upon the development the president general of Ihite Mr. George Madu unilaterally went into amendment of Ihite chieftaincy constitution when he discovered that original chieftaincy constitution executed by Igwe B.O. Ofu did not favour his choice candidate, Mr. Okwudiri Ifurunwa.”

Recall that Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo had on January 13, issued certificate of return to Mr Timothy Ifurunwa, who was rejected by members of the community.

A claimant to the stool, Chief Ikechukwu Samson Okoli told journalists that Ifurunwa is an illegal monarch, and a making of the president general of the community, George Madu, who he said connived with the commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon Tonycollins Nwabunwanne to deceive the governor into issuing him a certificate of recognition.

“Our Igweship stool is rotational, and it rotates around the villages in the community, and after the demise of Igwe B.O Ofu, my village, which is supposed to produce the next monarch, choose me as the next monarch, but the President General unilaterally amended the constitution even without the traditional council, and went ahead to pick Ifurunwa as Igwe, who is from the last village.

“We have dragged them to court, but they jettisoned the court process to pick Ifurunwa as Igwe and even as the matter is still in court, they want to crown him. I want to call on the governor and the CP to stop it to avoid breakdown of peace in the community.”

In his petition to both the governor and the CP on behalf of the traditional council, Barr Ndubuisi Onyeakpa also added his voice, warning of a possible breakdown of law and order if the coronation is allowed to take place

The petition read: “The unilateral amendment of Ihite chieftaincy constitution neutralized the involvement of Ihite Traditional Council in the process of selection, nomination, presentation and crowing of a would be traditional ruler of Ihite and introduction of use of electoral college in the selection of Igwe which is contrary to Ihite chieftaincy constitution.

“In the light of the above development, the members of Ihite Traditional Council felt aggrieved and approached court to nullify the amended.

“Despite the pending of the subject matter in court, George Madu, Okwudiri Ifurunwa, Michael Ugwu, Sunday Nwankwo and Lazarus Eze, had fixed 19 day of April, 2025 for the inauguration of new Traditional Council of Ihite and coronation of Okwudiri Ifurunwa as new Igwe of the town despite motions pending in the High Court to stop the process.

“We call on you to use your good office and the Chief security officer of the state to look into this matter and prevent the suspects from going against the law and respect the process of court rather than taking steps that will cause breach of peace and break down of law and order in Ihite town knowing full well that taking step over a matter that is pending in court amounts to total disrespect to the court and rule of law which a person who is holding himself out as a royal father should not undermine the process of court,” the petition read.

  • Solicitor ‘restrained’ after judge lets them bypass court security

    Judge issued formal advice

A judge who helped a solicitor enter a court building through an “alternative entrance” after they refused to comply with security checks has been issued with formal advice.

Judge Jenna McKinney, who was sitting as a magistrate at the time, let the unnamed duty solicitor back into the court building through another entrance after they had previously been denied re-entry by security staff.

The solicitor’s subsequent re-entry via other means led to “a dispute between the solicitor and security staff, resulting in the solicitor having to be restrained,” the JCIO said in a statement.

At the time, McKinney held appointments as both a magistrate and a tribunal judge. She has since stepped down from the magistracy but continues to sit in the Immigration and Asylum Chamber.

In her explanation to investigators, McKinney said she believed the bench needed to find a way to deal with the solicitor’s absence, as they were due to represent several parties in a case that was about to begin. Her intention, she said, was to ensure the hearing could proceed.

She accepted in hindsight that her actions were inappropriate and apologised.

The JCIO noted that judicial office-holders are expected to maintain confidence in their impartiality and to comply with court security policies. Following an investigation under the Judicial Conduct Rules 2023, a nominated judge found McKinney’s actions amounted to misconduct.

However, the judge considering the case took into account McKinney’s previously unblemished record, full engagement with the investigation, and the fact she had not been assisted by others present at the time.

With those mitigating factors in mind, the judge recommended a sanction of formal advice — the lowest level of disciplinary action available. The recommendation was accepted by the Senior President of Tribunals, on behalf of the Lady Chief Justice and with the agreement of the Lord Chancellor.

  • ‘I’ve got solicitor apprenticeship offers from two Magic Circle firms and a top US firm – how do I choose?’

    Big decision

In our latest Career Conundrum, a soon-to-be solicitor apprentice finds themselves in the enviable position of choosing between three offers from Magic Circle and US firms.

“Hello Legal Cheek. I have been lucky enough to receive three offers for a solicitor apprenticeship, one US law firm and the other two are members of the Magic Circle. I’d prefer not to name them if that’s ok. Basically I am struggling to decide between the three. Pay and training structure seem very similar but I wondered if your readers had any insights into the Magic Circle versus US law firms, especially from a training/apprenticeship perspective?”

  • Mom and her ex allegedly killed 3-year-old to 'make room for a child' they could have together

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. (TCN) — A mother and her former boyfriend stand accused of killing a toddler nearly seven years ago.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office announced April 14 that 33-year-old Amanda Maison and 28-year-old Maurice Houle were both arraigned on a charge each of first-degree murder and denied bond. Maison and Houle were initially arrested on April 11, but the sheriff’s office did not disclose their names or any further details at the time.

According to WDIV-TV, Houle also faces three counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer because he was allegedly violent with law enforcement personnel and injured one of them during his arrest.

The victim, identified by WDIV as Matthew Maison, was found dead in February 2018, and an autopsy later revealed that he died of blunt force trauma injuries and possible suffocation.

St. Clair County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Sparling reportedly said that when the suspects were brought in for questioning, Houle and Amanda Maison came up with a plan to lie about how the toddler incurred some of his past injuries.

In a statement obtained by WDIV, Sparling said, “This case is an extremely serious case. Obviously, we have charges of felony murder substantiated by child abuse in the first degree. We have a young child who was the victim here. This young child, Matthew, suffered years of abuse at the hands of both defendants.”

Houle and Maison allegedly admitted to officials that the other abused the victim.

Prosecutors allege Houle struck Matthew Maison in the face and put a pillow over his face “and pretended like he was playing.” According to WDIV, the child was also locked in his room without food or water for hours at a time, and he would be placed in timeout on his knees.

Child Protective Services reportedly investigated Houle over the boy’s injuries throughout his life.

Sparling allegedly said the suspects planned to “kill Matthew to make room for a child that the two of them could have together.”

The boy’s mother reportedly lied about the abuse inflicted on her son. WDIV reports that she told investigators she shoved the boy’s head into the drywall “forceful enough to remove the backing of the drywall itself.”

Houle and Maison are set to appear in court again on April 22 and April 29. They remain held in the St. Clair County Jail.

  • Florida man allegedly fatally stabbed his girlfriend and her mother, then said he would 'do it again'

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (TCN) — A 41-year-old man stands accused of fatally stabbing his 34-year-old girlfriend and her 75-year-old mother, but investigators allege he originally planned to kill the entire family.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, April 12, deputies responded to a home on 108th Street North, where they found Christina Donzero and her mother, Betti “Suzanne” Thevenet Donzero, both deceased with multiple stab wounds. Authorities reportedly discovered Christina Donzero in a bedroom and Thevenet Donzero in the garage.

Deputies located the suspect, Kirk Hysell Jr., in the bathroom with multiple self-inflicted injuries, and he was transported to a hospital. Hysell’s daughter reportedly called law enforcement after her father allegedly told her he had killed his girlfriend and his girlfriend’s mother.

According to the sheriff’s office, Hysell admitted to stabbing the victims, claiming he “initially planned to kill the whole family,” and he also wanted to kill his other family members. Hysell allegedly said that if he got out, he would “do it again.”

Hysell was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on two counts of first-degree murder.
