  • Nashville man arrested for allegedly shooting pregnant woman, killing her unborn child

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (TCD) — A man has been arrested several days after he allegedly shot a pregnant woman in a car, causing her unborn child to die.

On Oct. 3, Metro Nashville Police announced detectives from the Specialized Investigations Divisions located 23-year-old Demarius Claybrooks and took him into custody on a charge of criminal homicide. Davidson County jail records show he is also being charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

Claybrooks allegedly shot the 23-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, while she sat in the front seat of a car on Lewis Street. According to police, Claybrooks allegedly shot at another car after a passenger from that vehicle got out. He then reportedly released a can of bear spray at a group of people and got back in his vehicle.

The gunshot hit the pregnant woman in her abdomen.

Police initially said there was a group of people standing near Lewis and Lafayette streets when a woman in a Nissan Maxima allegedly approached and discharged the spray. Police claimed that woman got back in the same car as the victim, then a man followed and started shooting. The driver reportedly transported the victim to Vanderbilt Hospital, then ditched the Maxima.

However, a detective from the Youth Services Division identified Claybrooks as the suspect who allegedly shot the victim and sprayed the crowd.

According to Nashville Police, “The spraying of the bear Mace is believed to be related to an ongoing dispute between several females in the area.”

  • Arewa Assembly petitions Police, DSS over alleged blackmail of NNPCL management

Arewa Assembly petitions Police, DSS over alleged blackmail of NNPCL management

The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has petitioned the Acting Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Security over what the group termed coordinated attacks against the top management of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) especially its Group Chief Executive Officer, Mallam Mele Kyari, and Chief Financial Officer, Umar Ajiya amongst others.

In the petition titled; “Petition Against the Ceaseless Blackmail on NNPCL Management by Some So-called Civil Society Organisations: The Need to Bring the Menace to an End,” the AYA warned that the politically orchestrated attacks against mainly top management personnel of the oil giant must stop.

Mohammed Salihu Danlami, Speaker, of the Arewa Youth Assembly, said, “It is most disturbing that these elements, in their recent advocacy, decided to single out the management of the NNPCL mainly of Northern extraction for attack namely; Mele Kolo Kyari, GCEO NNPCL (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited), Umar Ajiya, Chief Financial Officer, NNPCL, Danladi A. Inuwa, Executive Vice President, Business Services, and Ahmed Dikko, MD Port Harcourt Refinery.”

Danlami singled out those he alleged to being used in the cyberbullying and blackmail including the Northern Youth Council, Sardauna Platinum Leadership, “and so-called civil society organizations” of “taking advantage of the current political climate in our country to exert undue pressure on our new government and force a change in the leadership of NNPCL.

“The relentless harassment and manipulation tactics employed by these groups not only weaken the stability and progress of our nation but also pose a significant threat to the hardworking and dedicated management of NNPCL.”

The youth speaker claimed that the media attacks were designed to incite the common people in the north against the administration of President Bola Tinubu and derail the government.

The statement reads in part: “We strongly believe that these unpatriotic elements are trying to cash in on the complaints in Northern streets and communities about the appointments of Mr. President, which we believe hasn’t violated any constitutional provision and incites people of our region against the government, thereby derailing the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We have strong evidence in custody which showed that such characters have been sending text messages to the Management Staff of the Corporation, threatening them with protest and whatnot.

“These satanically inspired threat, we believe, is capable of reducing their productivity, which in the final analysis, will affect our economy as it is oil-dependent.

“Therefore, we wish to call all relevant Security agencies to take swift and appropriate action to address this issue and put an end to the ceaseless blackmail and protests against NNPCL management. We implore them to investigate these organizations thoroughly, as their actions warrant serious scrutiny and pose a threat to National Security and cohesion. They should equally check whether they are legal entities or not.”

A spokesperson of the oil company who preferred not to be named said the NNPCL too had forwarded all such messages bordering on threats and blackmails have been forwarded to relevant security agencies.

“The GCEO has directed that no management or staff of the NNPCL should engage these elements any longer who hide under the guise of FoI or civil society to threaten or blackmail the company. Our books have been made public severally, therefore, there is nothing to fear.

“Very soon these mushroom groups and those behind them will have a busy time with the security agencies,” the official hinted.

Anambra women protest imposition of leader, say she cannot read and write

    By Ovat Abeng

Women of Umueje Community in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest at the State Ministry of Women Affairs Complex Awka, over alleged imposition of leader on them.

The protesters who carries placards with varying inscriptions said the woman leader, Maria Machi being imposed on them by certain individuals was not qualified to be their leader, as she can not read and write.

Some of the placards read, “Maria cannot read or write, she should be disqualified from contesting election”, “Maria is not a registered member of Umueji ASATU women wing”, “Commissioner please save our souls from the hands of families of chidube and Machi.”

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Chairlady, Executive Council Committee, Umueje Improvement Union Women Wing, Augustina Obiora said Anthonia Edogo remained their preferred leader, following popular acceptance in a recently conducted election, though inconclusive.

She insisted that Machi should not be allowed to participate in any other election in the community, saying anything contrary would amount to gross violation of the constitution of the association.

She said, “On August 15, 2023, we had community election to produce new woman leader. Mrs Anthonia Edogo declared interest. Later, another woman, Maria Machi also came out to contest.

“But our people said no because she’s not a member of ASATU women wing. Besides, she doesn’t know how to write her name properly.

“Yet her younger brother was pushing her, insisting she has right to contest. We later allowed her. But immediately she discovered she was losing in the election, scattered the ballot box and was about to beat her rival but we intervened.

“A week later, we came here to find out our position on the matter but were told the Commissioner was yet to respond. We were later told that she had been briefed on what transpired on the election day.

“We were told the commissioner said the woman was disqualified since she carried the ballot box and threw it away herself, and asked us to come for inauguration.

“After the inauguration, when some of the executive members came to appreciate the commissioner, she told us that things have changed, that we should prepare for another election.

“Our people refused, insisting we don’t want another election. The commissioner later said a caretaker will be in place pending the election which she fixed for Friday.

“We’re here to tell the commissioner that if another election must take place, Maria will not participate because she’s not qualified. Any attempt to allow her will amount to gross violation of our constitution.

“As we speak, our community is boiling. The woman who is influential is busy sharing money and lobbying members, all in a bid to impose herself on us.”

Responding, Commissioner for Ministry of Women Affairs, Ify Obinabo who spoke through an official in the ministry, Obiora Onunkwo commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct, assuring that their grievances would be addressed in no distance time.

  • W.Va. couple arrested after allegedly locking adopted children in barn for days at a time

SISSONVILLE, W.Va. (TCD) — A welfare check led to the arrest of two people this week who allegedly confined their adopted children to a barn without proper food or water.

According to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, on Monday, Oct. 2, at approximately 5:46 p.m., deputies were called out to the 200 block of Cheyenne Lane. No parents or caretakers were home, so deputies forced entry into the barn.

Inside, the Sheriff’s Office said deputies found a male and a female juvenile locked in a 20-by-14-foot room without running water or a proper bathroom, and they were “obviously deprived of adequate hygienic care and food.”

According to a criminal complaint obtained by WCHS-TV, the caller who requested the welfare check told dispatchers they believed the victims were confined to the shed for days at a time. The caller reportedly saw 63-year-old Donald Lantz open the door to talk to the children before he closed it and locked them in. The caller also said the children were allegedly forced to perform farm work and had to stay outside the home.

According to WCHS, deputies observed just one table and a chair inside the barn. The children, who were wearing dirty clothes, allegedly emitted a strong body odor, indicating that they hadn’t properly bathed for days. Deputies also noticed a concrete floor, plywood walls, and a camera in the corner of the room.

During a search of the property, the Sheriff’s Office discovered another small child locked inside the main home in an unprotected loft that was around 15 feet high.

Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Josh Lester told WCHS, “It’s a pretty bad case. You know, any type of situation like this is not really comparable to this horrific condition. It’s just not how you want or how you would expect children to be raised or taken care of.”

The victims’ adoptive parents, Lantz and 61-year-old Jeanne Whitefeather, eventually arrived on scene and were arrested on felony charges of gross child neglect creating a substantial risk of injury.

According to WCHS, Whitefeather confessed to deputies that she and Lantz left the children in the barn and that they “like it.”

The couple remains held in the West Virginia Regional Jail and Correctional Facility on $200,000 bail each.

Child Protective Services took custody of the three adopted children.

  • Contractor Pockets N113 Million After Constructing 1.4 km of 17 km Road in Cross River

    By Godwin Otang

The seventeen (17) kilometers Okuni/Nsofang Road that leads to Nsofang, a community in Etung Local Government Area of central Cross River State, has been funded three times by the federal government. Yet, it is still in very bad shape.

Commuters that use the road are constantly exposed to grave dangers due to its impassibility despite gulping over N113 million.

The Nsofang/Okuni Road starts from Okuni in Ikom and terminates at Ekang in the Akamkpa Local Government Area. It links Okuni, Okokoma, Agbor-etai, and Nsofang communities to Akamkpa Local Government Area. It is also referred to as Okuni/Okoroba/Ekang Road. However, the seventeen-kilometre Okuni/Nsofang axis of the road contracted to Ghost Zee Limited is the stretch from Okuni to Nsofang axis only.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is the implementing agency while Ghost Zee Limited is the contractor. The first funds released for the project was N99.6 million while the second was N7.9 million, as well as N6.3 million in the third tranche.

According to the project specification as awarded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, funding was approved for 17 17-kilometer stretch, but the contractor indicated 9 kilometers for execution on their signpost.

Meanwhile, members of the Nsofang community where the road actually leads, says the contractor worked on only 1.4 kilometers of the entire stretch of the road and that the job was poorly done.

The road was graded, but asphalting was done haphazardly and without a stone base. Members of the community who spoke to CrossRiverWatch said the job was done at just a 1.4-kilometer stretch and that the contractor at some point complained that there were no funds to continue the project.

“They worked on some bad spots on the road only, and left the rest,” said Mr. Emmanuel Ichor, a youth from the community. “They were asked to work on the whole stretch of the road, but they abandoned some parts.”

Community representative, Ogar Emumu, who was assigned by the community to work directly with the contractor confirmed that only 1.4 kilometers of the road were fixed.

“They worked some parts of the road around the Abijang community,” Emumu said. “But even the spots they worked were not solid, it wasn’t too good; I asked the contractor if the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development did not include the pouring of the stone base on the road,  because even the area they poured asphalt on was broken.  The road did not solidify and did not last. Later, another contractor was supposed to come, but when I called him, he said there was no money, and that he couldn’t use his money to come down.”

He added: “All I know is the contractor worked on just 1.4 kilometers, but there was no stone base. There is no other work done on the road. All I know is 1.4 kilometers and nothing more.”

The Okuni, Okokoma, Agbor-etai, Abijang, and Nsofang communities who are all beneficiaries of the Okuni/Nsofang road are agrarian; these communities produce cocoa, banana, plantain, oil palm, and cassava traders, in large-quality. The bad state of the road has made it very difficult for these farm produce to sell well. Traders who patronize these farmers have also found it difficult to get access to the communities.

Patrick Manyor, who supplies bread from Okuni to Nsofang, shares his experience. “You can see that the road is in a sorry state,” he said. Adding: “I am appealing because this road is too bad as you can see; the government should repair this road for us. I pass here every day. I saw some people in 2021 working here but the work they did was not good enough. Potholes and erosion are eating up the road.  Sometimes we take back our goods halfway because of the road, we can not access the communities. It’s hindering business.”

A farmer from Abijang Community, Edim Nsor has the same thing to say: “They cleared the road up to Nsofang, then were asphalting, but it was done in no particular order, not too long after they left. They did a poor job here.”

“This is the heart of the tropical rainforest, and anything agriculture thrives here. This is a virgin land; but the challenge is the road, which if we can get this community will be the food basket of Cross River State. The road is our challenge, if you can follow it to a logical conclusion, it will save us a great deal. If it had rained today, you wouldn’t have passed.

A top management staff of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, who pleaded anonymity revealed that the Ministry has never made any budget to fund the Okuni/Nsofang road project. The staff claimed to about any funding for the project. They added that the earth road and asphalting work was a constituency project funded by the then Senator representing Cross River Central, Sandy Onor.

“That road is a constituency project facilitated by Senator Sandy Onor. After that year, the next year, he came again and upgraded it by asphalting 1.4 kilometers of the road. The asphalting was to capture a particularly bad spot on the road. Is not that the Ministry awarded it directly,” he said.

“The community also helped to destroy the road because while the contractor was working on the road, trucks loaded with timber were driving past the asphalt work, to the extent it resulted in a serious problem between the contractor and the truck drivers. You know, these constituency projects pass through ministries for supervision and guidance. The ministry has never funded any award of contracts on that road.”

After several efforts to reach the contractor Ghost Zee Limited on the project without any result, the Instagram account of the Company’s director, Kenneth Zotaobi Okafor was contacted. In his response, Okafor noted that the company did not have any 17km road contract in Cross River but did not give further clarifications.

“I don’t have any 17 km Road in Cross River,” he said.

    There Should Be A Probe

Meanwhile, the Country Director of Citizens Solution Network, Mr. Richard Inoyo in his reaction called for concerted efforts to get the Okuni/ Nsofang road in good shape.

“First, the mere fact that over 113 million has been disbursed to Ghost Zee Limited, shows failure on the part of the contractor, and is a clear case of corruption and social injustice to the people of Okuni and Nsofang communities,” he said.

“The way to go is to write to the ministry to look into the issues, and that less than 2 kilometers have been done.  The contractor should attend to questions asked by the people of Okuni/Nsofang.

“There is a need to involve the Nigerian Police in this issue, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)  should look into the issue.  The federal ministry should ensure that, when money is released for projects, the projects for which the money is meant for are done.”

Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love,” a statement on behalf of his wife, Lady Gambon, and son, Fergus, issued by publicist Clair Dobbs, said.

Another, Emma Watson, thanked Sir Gambon for “showing us what it looks like to wear greatness lightly.”

Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Porter Film Series

According to Wikipedia, Michael John Gambon was born in the Cabra suburb of Dublin on 19 October 1940. His mother, Mary (née Hoare), was a seamstress, while his father, Edward Gambon, was an engineering operative during World War II.

His father decided to seek work in the rebuilding of London, and moved the family to Mornington Crescent in London’s Camden borough when Gambon was six.

His father arranged for him to be made a British citizen, a decision that would later allow him to receive a substantive (rather than honorary) knighthood.

Brought up as a strict Catholic, he attended St. Aloysius Boys’ School in Somers Town and served at the altar. He then matriculated to St Aloysius’ College in Highgate, whose former pupils include actor Peter Sellers. He later moved to North End, Kent, where he attended Crayford Secondary School but left with no qualifications at the age of 15.

He then gained an apprenticeship as a toolmaker with Vickers-Armstrong. By the time he was 21, he was a qualified engineering technician. He kept the job for a further year, acquiring a lifelong passion for collecting antique guns, clocks, watches and classic cars.

At age 24, Gambon wrote a letter to Micheál Mac Liammóir, the Irish theatre impresario who ran Dublin’s Gate Theatre, accompanied by a CV describing a rich and wholly imaginary theatre career: he was taken on.

Gambon appeared in many productions of works by William Shakespeare such as Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth and Coriolanus. Gambon was nominated for thirteen Olivier Awards, winning three times for A Chorus of Disapproval (1985), A View from the Bridge (1987), and Man of the Moment (1990). In 1997, Gambon made his Broadway debut in David Hare’s Skylight, earning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play nomination.

Gambon made his film debut in Othello (1965). His other notable films include The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), The Wings of the Dove (1997), The Insider (1999), Gosford Park (2001), Amazing Grace (2006), The King’s Speech (2010), Quartet (2012), and Victoria & Abdul (2017). Gambon also appeared in the Wes Anderson films The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). Gambon enhanced his stardom through his role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series from 2004 to 2011, replacing Richard Harris following his death in 2002.

For his work on television, he received four BAFTA Awards for The Singing Detective (1986), Wives and Daughters (1999), Longitude (2000), and Perfect Strangers (2001). He also received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Path to War (2002) and Emma (2009). Gambon’s other notable projects include Cranford (2007) and The Casual Vacancy (2015). In 2017, he received the Irish Film & Television Academy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2020, he was listed at No. 27 on The Irish Times’ list of Ireland’s greatest film actors.

  • Vandalism: NSCDC parades 40-year-old, vows to make Cross River hot for criminals

Vandalism: NSCDC parades 40-year-old, vows to make Cross River hot for criminals

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has disclosed that it would make Cross River too hot for vandals of public infrastructures in the state.

This was stated by Commandant Charles Brown, the Cross River Commandant of NSCDC on Thursday in Calabar while parading a 40-year-old vandal of high capacity streetlights in Calabar.

Brown said the suspect who identified himself as Ibrahim Sani was caught around MCC Road in Calabar vandalising armoured cables and flex wires of streetlights in the area.

According to him, this act which used to be recurrent was being checked as the agency had in the last 14 months ensured the prosecution of 14 cases all on vandalisation of critical infrastructures.

“The suspect confessed that he sells what he steals to scrap metal dealers and we invited some of them but they all denied him and he was not able to identify any of them.

“We appeal to residents of Cross River to be on the lookout for any vandal of government property in their communities and report to the corps because security men are not spirits.

“Also, we need the partnership of the state government in the area of facilities, so we can patrol and keep surveillance of critical and national assets in the state.,” He maintained.

He added that the suspect would be charged to court and the judges would decide his fate.

Similarly, Mr Francis Ekpo, a member of the taskforce in charge of management and expansion of streetlights in Calabar, said it was disheartening that some criminals were bent on keeping the city dark to pave way for their heinous activities.

According to Ekpo, while the state government was trying to ensure that Calabar was illuminated at night, criminals go around at night to vandalised these expensive high-capacity streetlights.

“One of the most expensive infrastructure to run in the state is power because armoured cables and flex wires are very expensive, yet these criminals vandalise them for their copper content.

“I want to call on the youths in the communities in Calabar to protect public infrastructures in their neighbourhood as it is their properties.

“No stranger can come into your community and dig for armoured cables and you don’t know about it, support government to keep the state alive,” he said.

He however commended the men of NSCDC for their quick response while adding that the government of the state was working out a plan to ensure that vandals and other criminal elements were smoked out from their holes.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the 40 year old suspect claimed it was his first time of vandalising streetlights in Calabar metropolis.
