  • Mom allegedly strangled son to death with tablecloth, then ran errands with his body in the car

MIAMI (TCD) — A Missouri woman was taken into custody in south Florida this week after she allegedly killed her 8-year-old son, then ran errands for several hours with his body in the car.

Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation records show Shaneka McKinzie was arrested Thursday, Nov. 16, on a charge of first-degree murder.

According to the police report cited by NBC Miami, on Tuesday, Nov. 14, McKinzie drove her son, Jaisyn Burgos, to Hialeah Hospital. He was reportedly unconscious when they arrived and he was soon pronounced deceased. An autopsy determined the boy had been strangled to death with a tablecloth.

NBC Miami reports McKinzie allegedly told police she had been planning her son’s death for several days and ultimately strangled him when he was asleep in the backseat. Following his death, McKinzie allegedly ran errands around Miami-Dade County with her son’s body still in the car.

  • 2 charged after nation’s 'largest-ever seizure of counterfeit goods' worth over $1 billion

NEW YORK (TCD) — Officials recently seized over 200,000 knockoff designer items and have charged two individuals on suspicion of trafficking those goods.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, from around January until Oct. 20, Adama Sow and Abdulai Jalloh, who also went by Troy Banks, allegedly operated “large-scale counterfeit goods trafficking operations out of a storage facility.” Prosecutors allege that additionally, Jalloh smuggled counterfeit items through an offsite location in Manhattan.

In total, the attorney’s office said officials seized around 219,000 counterfeit bags, clothes, shoes, and other luxury items with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of approximately $1.03 billion.

Authorities reportedly recovered over 83,000 counterfeit items with a MSRP of over $502 million in facilities controlled by Sow and over 50,000 counterfeit items with a MSRP of over $237 million on premises operated by Jalloh.

The attorney’s office unsealed indictments charging Sow and Jalloh with trafficking in counterfeit goods. They were arrested on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said it was “the largest-ever seizure of counterfeit goods in U.S. history.”

NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban added, “The trafficking of counterfeit goods is anything but a victimless crime because it harms legitimate businesses, governments, and consumers.”

If convicted, Sow and Jalloh face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The attorney’s office noted that the street value of knockoff designer items is often lower than the MSRP.

  • Missing man’s body found in 'very desolate' area of northern Michigan

WARREN, Mich. (TCD) — Investigators located a “loving father and football coach” deceased and buried in a rural area five months after his family reported him missing.

In a press release, the Warren Police Department announced James Wilkins’ body was discovered in a remote part of Oscoda Township close to an access road. Police described the location as “very desolate and covered with thick brush and trees.” A Michigan State Police cadaver dog reportedly found Wilkins’ remains.

An autopsy will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 16, to confirm the victim’s identity.

Warren Police investigators reportedly received “credible and reliable information, which ultimately led us to Oscoda Township wherein Wilkins’ body was located.”

Family and friends reported 27-year-old Wilkins missing to the Warren Police Department on June 9, 2023. The department said he was “missing under suspicious circumstances,” which led investigators to immediately suspect foul play.

During the investigation, detectives identified Wilkins’ roommate, Donald Renfroe, as a person of interest, and obtained a warrant to search their apartment. While inside, detectives found blood and a patched-up bullet hole. Renfroe allegedly bought cleaning equipment the same day Wilkins disappeared.

According to Warren Police, Renfroe and his friend Darius Glenn allegedly cleaned the apartment and got rid of the body. Renfroe traveled to Ohio, where he was arrested on unrelated charges and transported back to Michigan. He was released on bond while detectives continued to look into the case. They reportedly learned Renfroe owned multiple firearms.

On Aug. 25, Renfroe was arrested again and charged with first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, concealing the death of an individual, and felony firearm possession. Glenn was also taken into custody on charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact to a felony.

Neither Renfroe nor Glenn has a record of prior criminal history.

  • HFW joins solicitor apprenticeship movement

    First cohort in 2024

Global firm HFW have joined the solicitor apprentice market, launching a six-year scheme and looking to take on its first two recruits next September.

The firm, a traditional shipping specialist with more recent inroads into the energy, commodities, and construction markets, has offices across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. The outfits largest base is, however, in London, boasting over 250 of the firms 700 lawyers.

Apprentices on the new programme will undertake a fully funded LLB, LLM, and SQE with the University of Law, whilst working at HFW’s London office. During their final two years, recruits will join with the firm’s graduate trainees on the existing training contract programme.

The Legal Cheek Firms Most List shows HFW takes on around 18 trainees each year, who can expect to take home £46,000 in year one, £50,000 in year two, and then £95,000 on qualification.

Legal Cheek’s final UK Virtual Law Fair of the autumn takes place NEXT WEEK on Tuesday 21 November

HFW managing partner Jeremy Shebson commented:

“We still have work to do in the legal sector to make the profession more accessible for talented individuals from all backgrounds. Our apprenticeship programme is designed to provide another option for students looking to pursue a career in the law, and will enable participants to complete their legal education while also receiving first-rate training and a salary, and without having to worry about the cost of studying and exams. It also means that we can support their development from an earlier stage in their career, and will help us continue to create a diverse and inclusive firm in which everyone can thrive.”

The number of outfits offering solicitor apprenticeships has grown significantly this year. Last month, Legal Cheek reported that US firm Weil Gotshal & Manges had launched their own scheme, having previously reported that over 50 top firms had joined forces to recruit at least 100 solicitor apprentices into London as part of collaboration led by the City of London Law Society (CLLS).

OREGON CITY, Ore. (TCD) — A 41-year-old man turned himself into police this week after allegedly shooting his wife in the head.

On Monday, Nov. 13, just before 1 p.m., Anthony Wessel went to the Oregon City Police Department and admitted that he fatally shot his wife inside their home in the 13400 block of Squire Drive. Officers responded to the residence, where they found 37-year-old Anna Wessel dead.

  • Junior lawyers: let us refuse work on ethical grounds

    New research shows culture split

Junior lawyers want to refuse work they consider unethical, a new report has suggested.

A survey of 72 junior lawyers found that almost two-thirds thought that their firms should allow them to refuse work on matters that they deem outside their ethical boundaries. This was contrasted with just 18% who are currently able to at their firms.

The report, produced by Obelisk Support, a flexible legal work specialist, also found that only a slim majority feel able to challenge their superiors if they think that what they are asked to do is unethical. This is despite 86% saying that they were looking to effect positive change in society through their legal work.

Almost three quarters of those surveyed said they would not join a firm with values that did not match with their own, even if they were offering a bigger pay packet.

Legal Cheek’s final UK Virtual Law Fair of the autumn takes place NEXT WEEK on Tuesday 21 November

Elsewhere, a round table discussion that formed part of the study suggested that profit per equity partner (PEP) should be rebranded to people environment and purpose, with it suggested that firms are placing too great an emphasis on money.

Resentment amongst senior lawyers was also highlighted during this conversation. “There is something among the older generation where, either consciously or sub-consciously, they think, ‘I worked bloody hard to get into this profession and no one cared about my mental health. I worked long hours. Why should the younger generation get away with a nicer culture?’ Perhaps there is a bit of resentment there,” commented one participant.

Another noted how the culture is “so toxic”.

Dana Denis-Smith, CEO of Obelisk Support, said in response to the findings:

“The next generation of lawyers is expecting the legal profession to shift to a business model that prioritises sustainability beyond profitability. Legal businesses that reflect the core principles of purpose, equality and environmental awareness will be the trusted partners of clients. Mindful of their own responsibilities, clients are pressing for their supply chains to reflect these new priorities.

She continued: “Businesses are now in an era of ‘show, not tell’ and law firms are not immune from scrutiny. It is not enough to draft the policies and send out the press releases – they have to prove they mean something. This will create the platform for motivated staff to deliver for their clients.”

Earlier this year The Law Society published new guidance that suggests law firms may be able to refuse clients whose business contradicts environmental targets, or the individual firm’s policy on climate change.

  • Suspected serial killer convicted of 2 murders in Delaware as he awaits more charges in Philly

WILMINGTON, Del. (TCD) — A jury found a 41-year-old suspected serial killer guilty of several charges relating to a “brutal crime spree” that occurred two years ago.

The Delaware Attorney General’s Office announced in a statement Tuesday, Nov. 14, that Keith Gibson was convicted of 25 crimes, including four counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, 13 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, four counts of first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy, one count of theft of a motor vehicle, and one count of wearing body armor during the commission of a felony.

He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison in what Attorney General Kathy Jennings called a “deeply disturbing case.”

On May 15, 2021, Gibson robbed a Metro PCS store in Elsmere and fatally shot employee Leslie Ruiz-Basilio, 28, then stole her car. A few weeks later, Gibson robbed and killed 42-year-old Ronald Wright, then assaulted someone else. Over the next few days, he assaulted three others and attempted to kill one of the victims.

Wilmington Police arrested him June 8, 2021, during an armed robbery at a local Rite Aid. He was reportedly wearing a ballistic vest and had a loaded firearm, ammunition, narcotics, and a knife on his person.

He was indicted in July 2021 on 41 felony counts. The Delaware Attorney General’s Office said at the time he is also considered a suspect in several murders in Philadelphia that occurred the same year.

According to WHYY-FM, Gibson is believed to have killed four people in Philadelphia between February and June 2021, including his mother, Christine Gibson. He also allegedly fatally shot Dunkin’ employee Christine Lugo, and two other men.

Gibson was reportedly out on probation when he allegedly killed the victims.

Attorney General Kathy Jennings said in the statement following the conviction, “The defendant carried out a vicious, cold-blooded crime spree, killing two and injuring four people in Delaware, and facing pending charges for yet more violence in Pennsylvania. He was armed and wearing a bulletproof vest when law enforcement arrested him, and it is difficult to fathom how much more destruction he would have caused had he not been apprehended.”

Herdsman escapes death as suspected gunmen kill 20 cows, injure others in Anambra

    By Ovat Abeng

A cattle rearer, Haruna Mohammed on Monday escaped death as some persons suspected to be gunmen invaded his settlement at Mgbaukwu Community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing 20 cows and injured others.

The leader of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MCBAN) in the Southeast, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, who disclosed this while briefing journalists in Awka on Wednesday also noted that the entire fulani family in the state are currently living in fear over the incident.

He said the Police and Vigilante in the area are aware of the attacked, noting that the gunmen are still laying siege at the scene of the incident.

He noted that no life was loss during the attacked.

Alhaji Siddikki, said “I came to know about the incident when the owner of the cows Mr. Haruna Mohammed called me on Friday November 10, 2023 and told me that he heard an announcement in the community that some people suspected to be gunmen are planning to attack his cows, then I advised him to relocate the cows to neighbouring communities of Amanuke and Ebenebe with immediate effect, in which he obeyed but to our unimaginable surprise the gunmen got the relocation information and trail Mr Mohammed and his cows to Amanuke town where they ambush them on Monday and in the process, a total of 20 cows worth about N14 million were killed and others injured.

“Mr Mohammed was born and breed in the community. He is a peace loving man who has friends and has been participating in every ceremony that happens in the town.

“I don’t know why he should be rewarded in such inhuman treatment.

“Before the execution of the act, I called the Transition Committee Chairman of Awka North LGA, Comrade Thankgod Anago and informed him about the threat, but he could not do anything to prevent the ugly situation. Our people are currently living in fear across the state couple with the economic hardship in the country. And as I am speaking to you now, the gunmen are still laying siege at the scene of the attack alongside with the cows.”

Siddikki, who is also Siriki Fulani in Anambra and the National Deputy Director of MCBAN while calling on the State Government, security agencies to ensure that those behind the invasion are brought to justice, appealed to his members to remain calm and go about their normal businesses.

He, however, commended the State Government and the Police authority for their steadfast commitment to ensure the sanctity of lives and properties in the state and their prompt response to curtailed further destruction.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, when contacted via telephone, said he is not aware of the situation, but promise to get back to our correspondent.

“I will make an inquiry and get back to you, please.”

However, as at the time of filing this report the Police PRO was yet to get back to our correspondent as promised earlier.

  • ‘Are you a Jew?’ Husband and wife City lawyers subjected to ‘antisemitic attack’ on bus

Footage of incident involving associates from Slaughters and MoFo shared widely online

A pair of City lawyers have received support from the wider legal community after footage of them being subjected to an ‘antisemitic attack’ went viral online.

The married couple, who are associates in the London offices of Slaughter and May and Morrison Foerster, describe in separate LinkedIn posts how they were accosted by an unnamed female woman on the 214 bus near Kentish Town in north west London.

The footage, which was first posted on X (see below), shows the passenger acting in an aggressive manner before asking, “Are you a Jew?”. She then appears to take a swipe at the phone that is recording her before directing her anger at another passenger. She can then be seen ranting and threatening a passenger who tries to intervene.

Legal Cheek isn’t naming the associates at the request of their respective firms.

The Slaughter and May lawyer’s LinkedIn post states:

“On Saturday night, on my bus ride home, my husband and I found ourselves at the center of a distressing anti-Semitic attack. A woman, two rows ahead, overheard our discussion about McDonald’s chips and started loudly proclaiming that ‘only Jews eat McDonald’s.’ Appalled by this, I began filming.”

“It is not safe to be a Jew in London right now. We are experiencing everything that we were warned about as children. This weekend in London, Jewish homes have been graffitied, people had to be escorted by police whilst leaving Synagogue and posters have been waved that would have been proudly held up in 1930s Germany. Each bus or train journey becomes increasingly intimidating, making us question if this is a place we can continue to call home. As the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors, I am appalled (but sadly, not completely surprised) that this is something I have to face in my lifetime.”

    She continues:

“To my non-Jewish friends and colleagues – please understand that this is the reality for Jewish people right now. Please do not look away. Please do not stay silent. Please reach out to your Jewish friends, talk to them, listen to them. And if and when you witness incidents like this – please, please, speak up. Because despite there being lots of other people on the bus, only one other person confronted her. And I was scared. This is a route I take daily, and while I had my husband with me this time, I can’t help but wonder who would stand up for me if I were alone?”

“I didn’t want to post this. I recently deleted my social media because I found it too distressing — a sea of posts that try to reduce a complex, devastating conflict down to good vs evil, and try and make people ‘pick sides’.”

“This reductive thinking has real life consequences – it demonises an entire people. Because the woman on the bus didn’t ask me if I support Palestinian civilians – I do – or if I take issue with Netanyahu’s government – I do – or if I condemn the settlements on the West Bank – I do – or if I desperately want this tragic war to end – I do.

“The woman on the bus didn’t ask any of that. All she asked was: ‘Are you a Jew?’”

In a separate LinkedIn post, the Slaughter and May lawyer’s husband, an associate at MoFo, echoed his wife’s account of the incident. He said it had left him “paralysed in shock but my wife had the nerve to start filming”. He added that the police responded swiftly and are investigating the incident.

The posts have collectively attracted hundreds of comments in support from fellow lawyers and the wider legal community.

Responding to the incident, Slaughter’s managing partner Deborah Finkler said: “We are appalled and saddened that one of our colleagues was the victim of an antisemitic attack this weekend. This incident is deeply troubling, and something that no-one should have to go through, on account of religion, race or any other characteristic. We condemn antisemitism and any other form of hatred and we are focused on supporting our colleague and others affected at this time.”

Meanwhile, a firm spokesperson for MoFo added: “We are extremely saddened and distressed that one of our London colleagues and his wife were the victims of an antisemitic attack over the weekend. Our thoughts are with him, his wife, and family at this difficult time. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing rise in antisemitism globally and in many of our own communities, and recognize the pain and concern of the Jewish community and our Jewish colleagues here at MoFo. As our colleague poignantly expressed, ‘no one should ever feel unsafe due to their ethnicity, religion, or identity.’ We condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, bigotry, xenophobia, and hatred in all its forms and stand in solidarity with everyone affected by hate or xenophobia around the world.”

In a statement, the London Metropolitan Police said: “We are aware of a video circulating showing an incident that we believed to have taken place on a bus in Kentish Town, Camden. We have reached out to the person who shared the video to obtain further information. Further enquiries are ongoing. There have been no arrests at this time. Police have been clear that there is no place in London for hate. Anyone who has information that could assist police should call 101 ref CAD 6095/12 Nov.”
