  • Aspiring lawyers sleep deprived, research finds – but not as much as business students

    55 hour working week

A recent study shows that, contrary to popular belief, law students aren’t the most sleep deprived out there.

Taking into account eleven criteria, including timetabled hours, independent study, employment, student satisfaction and anxiety, as well as drop-out rates, the research put together a ranking of students who have the highest workload per week.

This, the study suggests, then correlates to the most and least sleep deprived groups.

Legal Cheek’s final UK Virtual Law Fair of the autumn takes place TOMORROW on Tuesday 21 November

Topping Bed Kingdom’s list with the greatest theoretical amount of sleep (aka most lie-ins) comes communications and media students, with an average 51 hours of work per week, closely followed by geographical and environmental studies. Rounding off the top three is historical, philosophical and religious studies with an average week of 52 hours.

Law students, on the other hand, came in as the third most sleep deprived of the eight subject areas studied, with an average week of just over 55 hours. Outworking the lazy lawyers came those on social science and business and management courses, clocking just under and over 57 hours respectively.

  • Tennessee man accused of strangling police officer and biting off a piece of his ear

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCD) — A 43-year-old man with a criminal history faces charges after he allegedly bit part of a police officer’s ear off during a traffic stop this week.

According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, the incident happened on Tuesday, Nov. 14. WREG-TV reports that at approximately 5 a.m., an officer noticed Marcus Johnson and a female passenger in a 2002 Ford F-150. When the officer looked up the vehicle tags, they were registered to another car.

According to WREG, Johnson tossed a brown leather pouch on the ground, and the officer went up to him. Johnson reportedly provided car information that did not verify his identity.

As the officer tried to apprehend Johnson, he allegedly strangled him and bit a piece of his right ear off. Johnson reportedly hit the police officer multiple times in the face and stomach area. WREG reports that Johnson even took off the officer’s holster to allegedly get to his gun and Taser.

The officer eventually took Johnson into custody and recovered the leather pouch. According to reports obtained by WREG, the officer found marijuana, fentanyl, methamphetamine, ecstasy, and Xanax inside the pouch.

Johnson and the officer were subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.

Officials later learned that Johnson had been driving even though his license had been revoked, and he didn’t have proof of insurance.

The district attorney’s office said Johnson had other felony drug charges from a 2022 case, and they advocated for his bond to be revoked.

The judge ultimately revoked Johnson’s bond in the 2022 case and increased his bond to $500,000 for an attempted second-degree murder charge from this week’s alleged assault on the officer.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said in a statement, “When I saw how he had been a fugitive for about a year from a prior charge, I instructed our prosecutors to not only seek a high bond on the new charge, but to revoke bond outright. This defendant has already proved he can’t be trusted. I’m glad the judge agreed.”

Johnson remains held in the Shelby County Jail on multiple charges, including possession of a substance with intention to sell, criminal impersonation, attempted second-degree murder, resisting officials retention, driving while license suspended, violation of financial law, and violation of vehicle registration.

  • Woman sentenced for killing up-and-coming pro cycling star amid love triangle

AUSTIN, Texas (TCD) — A jury has found a 35-year-old woman guilty of killing her romantic rival and fleeing, which led to a nearly two-month-long manhunt.

The Travis County district attorney’s office announced Kaitlin Armstrong was convicted Thursday, Nov. 16, of first-degree murder for the 2022 shooting death of up-and-coming cycling star Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson.

The Associated Press reports the jury deliberated for about three hours before reaching the verdict. On Friday, Nov. 17, a judge sentenced Armstrong to 90 years in prison.

According to Austin Police, on May 11, 2022, at just before 10 p.m., officers responded to a residence on the 1700 block of Maple Avenue after someone called to report her friend, later identified as Wilson, was bleeding and unconscious. Police found Wilson has sustained several gunshot wounds and she was declared deceased at the scene.

The Associated Press reports Wilson, 25, had been shot twice in the head and once in the heart.

According to Armstrong’s affidavit, Wilson told her friend she was meeting up with a friend and fellow cyclist, Colin Strickland, that day and they planned on going swimming. Wilson was reportedly in Austin for a race that many speculated she would win.

Police obtained surveillance footage and noticed a dark SUV with a bike rack on the back park near the friend’s home. The SUV was reportedly the only car in the area until first responders arrived. Investigators went to Strickland’s home and found a dark Jeep Cherokee with a bike rack parked in his driveway.

He told investigators Armstrong owned the Jeep and he never drove it.

Strickland spoke with detectives and said he lived with his girlfriend, Armstrong. The two had been together for three years, but broke up briefly in October 2021. While separated, Strickland met Wilson and the two had a short relationship until he rekindled his romance with Armstrong.

The affidavit says Armstrong found out in May 2022 that Wilson and Strickland were still together even though he was back with her.

The U.S. Marshals Service said police issued a warrant for Armstrong’s arrest May 17, 2022. On May 18, 2022, Armstrong used a fake passport and flew to Costa Rica. Prior to her leaving, she sold her Jeep Cherokee to CarMax.

Marshals apprehended her in Costa Rica in June 2022 and extradited her back to Texas.

According to The Associated Press, while in Costa Rica, Armstrong underwent plastic surgery and dyed her hair.

After the verdict, Wilson’s mother said in a victim impact statement, “When you shot Moriah in the heart, you shot me in the heart.”

She added, “She lived as if every day was her last day. And she lived it so fully. She never wasted any time,” saying it seemed like Wilson “knew her life would be short.”

  • New York landlord accused of fatally stabbing 2 tenants and his girlfriend

NEW YORK (TCD) — A 54-year-old homeowner faces charges after allegedly fatally stabbing two tenants and his girlfriend during a dispute about unpaid rent this week.

According to Queens County District Attorney Melinda Katz, on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at around 7 a.m., David Daniel turned himself in to New York Police at the 113th Precinct. He told police, “I’m having issues with my tenants. I did something bad,” WPIX-TV reports.

Officers subsequently responded to 122-39 Milburn Ave. in the neighborhood of St. Albans in Queens, where they discovered Daniel’s two tenants, a man and a woman, deceased from multiple stab wounds in the basement. Katz said officers found Daniel’s girlfriend dead in a second-floor bedroom with multiple stab wounds as well.

Katz called it a “bloody crime scene” and said it was the “result of extraordinary brutality.”

WPIX-TV identified the victims as Daniel’s girlfriend, 51-year-old Coleen Fields, and his two tenants, 57-year-old Wayne Thomas and 55-year-old Evette Sweeney.

Daniel allegedly became upset when his tenants stopped paying their rent. He reportedly told reporters that he stabbed the victims because he was “under a lot of stress.”

Katz announced that Daniel was arraigned on three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of second-degree murder, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Daniel faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. He was scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.
