  • Georgia Army wife allegedly fatally stabbed 11-month-old because she wanted him to 'be with Jesus'

FORT EISENHOWER, Ga. (TCD) — A 30-year-old Army spouse stands accused of killing her 11-month-old child with a weapon in the presence of her two other children.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, on Nov. 15, April Short of Fort Eisenhower allegedly “used a knife to cut the neck of an 11-month-old child” while she “engaged in the knowing and willful perpetration of child abuse.” The victim was transported to Eisenhower Army Medical Center and pronounced dead.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by WSB-TV, April Short texted James Short, a military staff sergeant at Fort Eisenhower, and made references to God. She allegedly said to him, “The days of darkness are upon us.”

James Short went home and reportedly found his wife shuttered inside a bedroom with their 11-year-old, 6-year-old, and 11-month-old. April Short would not leave the room, and authorities arrived on scene to help get her out.

According to WSB, April Short eventually left the bedroom with her 11-year-old and 6-year-old, and she walked out of the home with them.

James Short and the officers reportedly entered the bedroom and found the 11-month-old child suffering from stab wounds.

April Short allegedly tried to drive away with the two other children, but officers stopper her and took her into custody.

According to WSB, Short confessed to injuring the 11-month-old child. The two other children reportedly told police their mother said she stabbed the victim so the child could “be with Jesus and God.”

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the attorney’s office announced that a federal jury indicted Short on charges of premeditated murder and felony murder. She is in custody with the U.S. Marshals Service.

  • Ill. man accused of running over woman he met on dating app during argument

DES PLAINES, Ill. (TCD) — A woman was sent to the hospital after a man she met on a dating app allegedly ran her over with his car because they got into an argument.

According to a crime report by the Des Plaines Police Department, on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 4:28 a.m., a patrolling officer heard a scream from a woman who was found knocking on a store’s front door. The officer made contact with the woman, who said she had been struck by a car. The police report noted the woman’s “clothes were wet and disheveled, showing signs of an incident occurring.”

Des Plaines Fire Department officials arrived at the scene and took the woman to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

During the investigation, police learned the victim and Jose Roldan Vazquez matched on a dating app and the two met in a parking lot across the street from where she was found. The victim got into Vazquez’s SUV and they left the lot. They reportedly returned to the parking lot, where they got into a verbal argument. The woman got out of the car during the dispute “to get away from Roldan Vazquez.”

After she exited the vehicle, he allegedly drove into her and she fell. Surveillance video from nearby businesses reportedly showed Vazquez’s SUV hitting the victim and knocking her down.

Des Plaines Police officers went to Vazquez’s home in Mount Prospect and arrested him on charges of aggravated battery and failure to report a personal injury motor vehicle accident. Police also ticketed him for operation of an uninsured motor vehicle.

  • Florida man sentenced for killing ex because she ghosted him

MELBOURNE, Fla. (TCD) — A 24-year-old man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for fatally shooting his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend last year because she wouldn’t return his calls.

On Dec. 6, the Florida State Attorney’s Office for the 18th Judicial Circuit announced that a judge sentenced Carlos Jones to life in prison. A jury convicted him in September of second-degree murder in connection with the 2022 death of Sha’Dayla Johnson.

According to the state attorney’s office, on Dec. 20, 2022, shortly before 8 a.m., Melbourne Police officers responded to a home at 2827 Colbert Circle to a report of a shooting. Officers discovered Johnson unresponsive in the carport suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Johnson was transported to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Witnesses reportedly observed Jones, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, at the home at the time of the shooting. Jones and Johnson had previously lived together.

Jones eventually surrendered to police in Palm Bay at approximately 11 a.m. The state attorney’s office said he confessed to the shooting and claimed he and his ex-girlfriend had a dispute because Johnson wasn’t “responding to his phone calls or text messages.” WPEC-TV reports that Johnson was on her way to work when Jones confronted her.

  • Florida man on death row now accused of 'brutally' killing at least 1 other woman

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. (TCD) — Investigators allege a man sitting on death row killed another woman who was “left for dead” on the side of the highway over 20 years ago.

On Dec. 5, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office announced Lucious Boyd, who was previously convicted of killing 21-year-old Dawnia Dacosta, was charged with first-degree murder and sexual battery in connection with Eileen Truppner’s death. Boyd was found guilty in June 2002 of first-degree murder, sexual battery, and kidnapping for killing Dacosta. He was sentenced to death for Dacosta’s murder and life in prison for kidnapping.

In a press conference, Sheriff Gregory Tony said Truppner is “no longer faceless and no longer nameless.”

Dacosta was reportedly killed about two weeks before Truppner.

According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, on Dec. 18, 1998, a woman was dragged to the side of U.S. 27, where she “took her last breath in the grassy area where she was abandoned.” A boater discovered her body the next day. She was face-down and investigators determined there were “clear indication” that the perpetrator sexually assaulted her. The woman did not have any form of identification on her, so she became classified as a Jane Doe.

TThe sheriff’s office called the investigation an “uphill battle from the beginning,” saying the only piece of evidence they had was her clothing and a sketch. Deputies went to nearby businesses and asked if anyone had seen her, but they came up empty-handed. The case eventually went cold.

Several years later, detectives reopened the case and created a new sketch, which led to a “breakthrough” in the case. Truppner was positively identified in May.

Truppner moved to the U.S. from Puerto Rico “to start a new chapter in her life.” She had two children and a “loving family.”

Truppner’s sister said at the press conference Truppner was “very kind with a good heart,” but she went through depression after giving birth to her children.

Capt. Jonathan Brown said he and his detectives “strongly believe” Boyd is a serial killer who might have killed women all over Florida. Brown classified both victims as women “in vulnerable situations that he took advantage of.”

Tony, the sheriff, said, “Justice has no expiration date.”

  • It’s becoming even harder to get a pupillage

Number of aspiring barristers on the rise; the number of pupillages not so much

This year has seen the greatest number of students ever enrol on Bar training courses, a new study by the Bar Standards Board (BSB) reveals.

The Annual Report on Bar Training 2023 states that 2,360 students have commenced Bar courses this year, compared to 2,308 last year and 1,976 in 2021. This figure is nearly 500 higher than the pre-Covid record in 2018/19.

The number of pupillage positions has, however, remained pretty flat, with 544 available in 2023 (registered up to 3 November), compared to 538 last year. Leaving aside Covid-related fluctuations in 2020 and 2021, the figure from 2018 was only marginally lower at 522.

Taking this together, while pupillage numbers have risen by 4% in the last five years, student numbers are up over 20%.

Highlighting the extent of the challenge faced by new grads, the reports zeros in on the 2020/21 cohort. Of the 2,075 who commenced training, 658 never completed the course. For those that did, 362 had gained pupillage by 2023, with over 1,000 passing the course and not subsequently obtaining a pupillage.

But there is some comfort for aspiring England and Wales barristers in the high number of international students who do Bar courses before returning home to practise. 42% of UK domiciled students who completed the Bar Course in 2020/21 have gained pupillage, compared to only 3% of passers who are domiciled overseas. The report notes that this “may reflect the fact that some overseas domiciled students have no intention of practising at the Bar of England and Wales.”
