    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra Government through the State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (APHCDA), has flags off free vaccination of Human Papiloma virus vaccine (HPV) in the state.

The flagged off ceremony took place at Michael Tansi Secondary School, Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area of the State, on Tuesday.

Declaring the exercise open, the state governor’s wife and the founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, Dr. Nonye Soludo, announced that the free vaccination will help curbed the spreed of cervical cancer among women in the state.

She also noted that the vaccination will provide lasting solution to cervical cancer.

According to Mrs Soludo, “Today is a significant day in our journey towards enhancing the health and well-being of women and girls.

“We have gathered here to address a pivotal development in the realm of public health-the introduction of the Human Papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine for girls aged 9 to 14 years.

“I am deeply honoured to stand before you as we embark on this important initiative that promises to safeguard the future of our children and tackle a significant health challenge head-on.

“Cervical Cancer is a scourge of our society and is fast becoming one of the leading causes of deaths among women.

“Every year in Nigeria, cervical cancer silently manifests in about 12,000 women and takes the lives of 8000 promising women.

“This disease destroys the lives of these women taking them away from their families just as they reach the prime of their lives, leaving husbands without wives, children without mothers and families in financial ruins.

“In my capacity as the first lady of Anambra state through the healthy living initiative, we are already offering free cervical cancer screening and treatment at some health facilities in the state to provide early detection, screening and treatment for the wives and daughters of Ndi Anambra.

“Let us come out en masse and get ourselves and our daughters 25 years and above screened to know our health status.

“Ndi Anambra, something great is happening in our state. I want to use this opportunity to appreciate the efforts of the state government who through the Ministry of Health and the Anambra State Primary Health care development Agency (ASPHCDA) and Partners, WHO, UNICEF, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), IVAC and SAWO are supporting our efforts by taking our home-grown campaign of healthy living to the next level.

The women of our future generation no longer have to wait and hope that “cervical cancer will not be their portion.” Solution is here!

“Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine is here to provide lasting protection for our girl child aged 9-14 years before they get exposed to the virus that is the primary cause of Cervical Cancer!

“Cervical cancer is going to become a thing of the past in Anambra state! With this Gardasil4 HPV vaccine, we will protect our girls and future leaders from this disease.

“No husband will become wifeless and no child will be rendered motherless in Anambra state because of cervical cancer.

“The government of Anambra state has done well to support our initiatives. Ndi Anambra, I enjoin you to do well to support our government in protecting our families.

Traditional Rulers and Religious leaders, pass the good news to your congregants and subjects. Get your girl child aged 9-14 years vaccinated against HPV to protect them from Cervical Cancer.

“Teachers, open your schools and allow all your eligible pupils and students to get vaccinated.

“Parents and guardians, take your eligible daughters and wards to the Primary Health Centres (PHC) and designated vaccination points to get vaccinated and protect their futures.

“Our children and our future, come out and get vaccinated. Tell all your friends aged 9-14 year old that you are going to take the HPV vaccine to protect your future from Cervical Cancer!

“The HPV Vaccine is free! Safe! Effective!”

In closing, the introduction of the HPV vaccine for girls aged 9 to 14 years marks a significant milestone in our mission to improve the health and well-being of our state’s young girls. We re-iterate our commitment to reducing the burden of cervical cancer on Anambra and providing our girls with a healthier, brighter future, the governor’s wife concluded.

In their separate remarks, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike and the Executive Secretary/CEO of ASPHCDA, Pharm. (Mrs.) Chisom Uchem, said the vaccine is expensive and out of the reach for most parents in Anambra but the state government under governor Chukwuma Soludo’s watch is providing this vaccine free of charge and one of the reasons why Gardasil  HPV vaccine was selected is the fact that it is a one dose vaccine that offers a life long protection,” the duo affirmed.

In his brief contribution, the South East Coordinator of World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Chukwumunya Igboekwu, noted that Anambra State has already taking the lead in prevention of the virus through the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative.

HPV Vaccine: Groups host mega rally uptake in Nnewi

    By Ovat Abeng

A mega rally on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine uptake was held at the weekend in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State to up-scale ongoing sensitization in the area.

The rally was implemented by Education and Research For Sustainable Development (ERSD) in partnership with International Vaccine Access Centre (IVAC), Direct Consulting and Logistics (DCL), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Women Advocates for Vaccine Access (WAVA) and Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) with funding from GAVI through John Hopkins.

Speaking at the rally which also served as grand finale of one-month daily sensitization, Executive Director, ERSD, Dr Judith Ani said the free vaccine administration to kick off on Monday, May 27, 2024 is for girls between the ages of 9 to 14.

Ani, member of one of the Civil Society Organizations working with IVAC in Anambra urged parents to take advantage of the opportunity to ensure their daughters within the age brackets were vaccinated.

She said, “Cervical cancer has been found to be the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among women globally. The cause has been found to be Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

“Before now, some of the residents were expressing fears that the vaccine were targeted at killing Nigerians to reduce African population, but with the information being passed across, those doubt are being allayed.

“With this rally, those ignorant about the vaccine are beginning to understand what HPV is all about and the importance of having the vaccine.

“We urge parents to allow their children to take the vaccine because parental consent is critical. On the part of the girls, we want them to understand that their health is important and the vaccine is in their own interests.

“They have to convince their parents on the need to take the vaccine which is 100percent safe and effective for cervical cancer prevention, having been tested in several countries.

“They should disabuse their minds from the rumours flying around that the vaccine is unsafe.

“ERSD acknowledges support received from Medical Women Association of Nigeria(MWAN) Anambra State Chapter, MWAN National Maternal and Child Health Committee, Nkwo Nnewi Central Market, St. Joseph Cakes and Events and Kenan Multilinks.”

A consultant paediatrician, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) and President, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Anambra State chapter, Dr Amaka Onubogu regretted high mortality rate of the cancer, revealing that no fewer than 8,000 cases were recorded annually with over 6,000 death.

“Initially, it costs about N80,000 to vaccinate a child, which majority cannot afford. In fact, our study in public and private schools in Nnewi shows that only 3 were vaccinated.

“That’s why government has decided to make it free. This is the first time it’s being introduced in Nigeria as part of routine vaccine. It came in two phases, and this is the second phase which is going on in 21 states across the country.

“We’ve been into aggressive campaign in markets, churches, schools, stakeholders. The pediatrics association in February trained immunization champions across the country with the support of the international body.

“Similarly, Nigeria Medical Association also trained immunization champions through the support of IVAC and these trainings were castigated at the local levels,” she added.

Also speaking, Technical Assistant for Clinton Health Association Initiative, Akpan Patrick said his organization was offering technical assistance to the state for the introduction of HPV into routine immunization and ensure access to vaccine to the public.

He identified hesitance and non-compliance to the vaccine as part of the challenges always encountered during vaccination.

“One of the challenges we encountered during the phase 1 and which may likely occur is hesitant and non-compliance. Others are inadequate sensitization, fears borne out of rumors in the internet that government is partnering with white people to reduce African population which is quite untrue.

“Since we anticipate these challenges, we’ve put up lots of strategies, including rumors management tools to curtail the rumor, advocacy, brought in stakeholders and other gatekeepers, including traditional and religious leaders, school heads, teachers to reach out to the targeted audience.

“About 89 million girls are expected to be vaccinated across the country, while we’re targeting about 476,664 girls in Anambra,” he disclosed.

It contains antioxidants that help combat free radicals in our bodies, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.

“Additionally, tea has been found to promote weight management, improve digestion, and boost the immune system. These health benefits make tea an excellent choice for those seeking natural and holistic remedies to support their well-being. By harnessing local tea cultivation, we have an opportunity to not only enhance our economy but also improve public health.

“Cultivating tea within our own borders allows us to tap into a growing market that values organic and locally sourced products. This can lead to job creation, especially in rural areas where tea plantations can thrive. The tea industry can become a significant contributor to our economy, attracting investment, creating employment opportunities, and fostering sustainable growth.

“In conclusion, the harnessing of local tea cultivation is a pathway to both economic prosperity and improved public health. By investing in tea plantations, we can create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth, and position Nigeria as a key player in the global tea market.

It is crucial that we recognize and seize this opportunity, supporting initiatives that promote and develop the tea industry. Nigeria still far behind in reaching its cancer care goal – NCS

The Nigerian Cancer Society, (NCS) has disclosed that the nation still lagged behind in reaching its cancer care goal.

The call was made by Dr Adamu Umar during a courtesy visit to the ultramodern Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Calabar on Monday.

Adamu and his team of cancer experts who  commended the leadership of the Centre for their efforts in addressing the scourge of cancer noted that the burden of cancer was still alarming in the nation.

He said while the Federal Government has put up a National Institute of cancer research and treatment to enhance timely data collection and advocacy, treatment was still very expensive not just for the poor but the rich too.

“We can address the fund gap by government doing the needful in creating the right infrastructure and empowering organisations to push for effective cancer care.

“The cancer health fund meant to cater for indigent breast, cervical and prostate cancer patients should be expanded to accommodate more cancers and more hospitals including private hospitals like Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

“Part of our suggestions as a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) is to have big cancer centres both public and privately owned, access this fund so that vulnerable Nigerians can benefit,” he said.

On her part, Dr. Aisha Mustapha, Chairperson, Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kaduna Chapter who was part of the team said she was happy that a private facility could provide comprehensive cancer care in Nigeria.

According to her, “I see a High Dynamic Range (HDR), brachytherapy machine and a linac radiotherapy machine which are state of the art,” she said.

Mustapha who is also a Cancer advocate and survivor asserted that if there were more centres like Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Nigeria, it would help the teeming women who need proper and effective cancer care.

Responding, Mr Yegwa Ukpo, Executive Director of the centre said he felt honoured for the visit of the society adding that it was an acknowledgement of the fact that they were having some impact on the cancer space.

Ukpo however said it was not yet “uhuru” as they were still looking at expanding the centre to become a one-stop-shop for cancer care, whether it is pediatric cancer, brachytherapy, surgeries and even radiotherapy for non carcinogenic purposes.

He said that two major challenges they have had over the years were patients not being able to afford cancer care while noting that they were trying to see ways of linking to the Federal Government’s  Cancer Health Fund to make treatment more accessible.

The executive director added that funds to expand the centre to a world class, one-stop-shop for cancer care was also a challenge they were working hard and hoping to surmount.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that part of the activities of the day included a tour of Asi Ukpo’s facilities and a decoration of the executive director as a lifetime member of the NCS for his contribution in cancer care.

  • FG ranks Anambra second lowest malaria prevalence state in Nigeria

FG ranks Anambra second lowest malaria prevalence state in Nigeria

    By Ovat Abeng

The Federal Ministry of Health has ranked Anambra State, the second lowest malaria prevalence in the Nigeria.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Ben Obidike, disclosed this to journalists at his office in Awka on Friday while debunking a publication making the round that the State Government is not doing enough to bringing malaria scourge to a standstill.

Obidike urged the general public to disregard the information, noting that as it stands, the State has the second lowest malaria prevalence in the country as per the latest national malaria survey carry out by the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja while Lagos State emerged the first.

He appealed to journalists to always balance their script before pushing it out for public consumption, quarreling that, it is unethical for a media practitioner to publish such report without proper verification and balancing.

It was gathered that the Commissioner was reacting to an interview granted to some Journalists in Awka, on Thursday by Professor Dennis Aribodor, a professor of Public Health Parasitology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, saying that Anambra Government and some other state governments in Nigeria are not doing enough to bringing malaria scourge to a standstill.

According to Aribodor, the nature of budget for malaria control and prevention across the states and the federation emphasizing that malaria is one big disease that can be eliminated in the country, if there is political will to do so.

He said some countries of the world like Algeria, Cape Verde, Mauritius, China, Palestine and some other nations have eliminated malaria epidemic with steadfast political will but the reverse, according to him, is the case in Nigeria and Anambra in particular.

Obidike, in his swift reaction, described the news as fake, optimist that the present administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo within a space of two years in office, has upgraded the health sector to International best standard via employment of over 5,000 qualified and certified Medical Doctors/Nurses across Health facilities in the state.

According to him, Governor Soludo’s two years in the office is quite eventful and worthy of commendation in view of his giant strides in all sectors.

“The governor’s exceptional performance has entrenched quality service delivery on all spheres of governance, especially, in Health Sector and brought dividends of democracy to all the nook and crannies of Anambra State.

Obidike went down memory lane, x-raying the governor’s exploits since inception of his administration and came to the conclusion that much has been achieved within just two years in the office especially in Health, road development, education and environment as well as youth empowerment and human capacity building.

“Within two years in office, we have had several free Healthy Living empowerment programmes of the governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo (Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative), free Antenatal services, where about 6,000 children were deliver free of charge at the state-own hospitals with only one mortality recorded, free treatment of malaria for pregnant women/children, free telemedicine services and the free distribution of mosquito nets to nursing mothers across the 179 communities in the state.

“Governor Soludo has equally approved the establishment of School of Nursing, to be located at Ekwulobia community, in Aguata Local Government Area of the State. He has also, in line with his campaign promises, said that he will build modern General Hospitals in all the 21 Local Government Areas and Primary Healthcare Centres across the 326 political wards in the state, all to provide quality healthcare services to the people.

“So, it is dishearten for someone like Professor Dennis Aribodor, a professor of Public Health Parasitology, to misinformed Ndi-Anambra that the State Government is not doing enough to bringing malaria scourge to a standstill, when the State has already been ranked the second lowest malaria prevalence in the country by the Federal Ministry of Health Abuja.

The Commissioner urged residents in the state to disregard the Aribodor’s message and continue to support the governor in order to actualized his vision of making Anambra a digitalized, smart, livable and prosperous state in Nigeria.

“Those involved will also face full extant law of the civil service and I feel so sad discovering that healthcare workers are behaving badly and are no longer upholding the ethics that guides their profession.

“Let me make it public now that we have Taskforce that monitor the activities and engage patients for their feedback regarding satisfaction with services rendered.

“That being said, we have been able to discover those sabotaging government efforts in repositioning of our hospitals for optimal healthcare delivery service to the people.

“We will continue to fish them out one by one and we don’t act on hear say but with evidence,” Dr. Obidike said.

…Urges Parents, Schools To Embrace Exercise

    By Kelvin Obambon

All is now set for the flag off of the annual comprehensive state-wide, school-based deworming exercise to treat against soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and Schistosomiasis (SCH) that are particularly common in children, the Paradise News has confirmed.

Speaking at a media parley with journalists at the NUJ Press Center, Calabar, on Tuesday, Pastor (Mrs) Veronica Mark, Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) Coordinator, Cross River Ministry of Health, and Mr Toochi Ohaji, Senior Manager, Evidence Action, Nigeria, confirmed that the exercise will commence from Wednesday 24th to Tuesday 30th April, 2024 across 14 local government areas of the state.

They affirmed that “Globally, over 1 billion children are at risk of intestinal worm infections. In Nigeria, over 48 million school-age children require treatment for STH infection and 16.6 million school-age children require treatment for schistosomiasis. These infections, known as intestinal worm infections result from poor sanitation and hygiene conditions and tend to have the highest prevalence in school-age children.

According to them, “The infections can lead to anemia, malnourishment, and impaired mental and physical development—ultimately affecting children’s educational outcomes and income as adults if left untreated. These worms disproportionately affect the poor, who are less able to afford the costs of diagnosis and treatment. This will potentially increase the inequality gap that currently exists and derail the country’s development goals of equitable access to health and education.”

Additionally, Toochi Ohaji explained that “Since 2016 in Nigeria, Evidence Action has been providing technical assistance to the Federal and Cross River State Governments on implementing school-based deworming for soil transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis in the state, delivering treatment to over 600,000 children in both public and private schools annually.”

Continuing, Ohaji pointed out that “Treating at-risk children through schools is an evidence-based, cost-effective solution. Evidence Action as a partner fighting Neglected Tropical Diseases in Cross River state has been providing technical assistance in planning, capacity building, logistics, data collection and reporting, community mobilization, monitoring and supervision of the school deworming program for STH and SCH.”

He, however, informed that “School-based deworming is implemented by the Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) program of the Cross River State Ministry of Health in partnership with the State Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board, and the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency. Evidence Action provides technical assistance to the state’s integrated NTD program. Deworming drugs are donated through the World Health Organization’s drug donation program.

“During this round of treatment in Cross River State, a total of 623, 828 school-age children will be targeted to receive Mebendazole tablets for the preventive treatment of STH and 173,000 will be targeted for Schistosomiasis treatment. About 1,000 health care workers will be trained to administer the deworming tablets in over 2,000 schools and 2,000 communities across 14 LGAs.”

The Senior Manager of Evidence Action, therefore, urged parents, schools and other stakeholders to ensure that children and wards that are between the age of 5 and 14 are presented for deworming in their various schools, adding that even out-of-school children can be taken to schools nearest to them for deworming. He concluded by saying that the deworming tablet that would be administered is safe.
