  • You now have less than 2 weeks to pre-order Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection’s physical edition and get the exclusive comic

At least for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is somehow over seven years old already as the latest entry in the franchise, but fans have something else on the classics side of the franchise to dive back into now.

Although the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection already released digitally, the countdown timer is starting to run low on the physical edition’s launch of the new MvC compilation and how long there is left to get try getting in on the pre-order goodies.

As was announced earlier this year, the Marvel Fighting Collection is set to release in retail stores on Friday, November 22, 2024, which gives you only around 11 or 12 days left to pre-order at the time of reporting for $50 USD.

That is for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions of the game since Steam is all digital, and the Xbox version wasn’t announced until afterwards with a 2025 launch window — and may or may not get a physical release.

It is also important to point out that the Switch copy of MvC does come on a cartridge in North America, but it appears as though Capcom is only offering the collection as a code in a box for Nintendo users in Europe for some reason.

Those who pre-order the Marvel Fighting Collection can receive an exclusive 32-page Marvel vs. Capcom comic book.

There’s not much else revealed on the details about what’s in the comic, but we do know the cover art was done by Marvel’s Todd Nauck.

As of the time of reporting, Walmart, GameStop, Amazon and Best Buy all still list the comic book as pre-order bonuses for the collection in the United States.

Since they are labeled as “while supplies last,” however, you may want to contact your retailer of preference to make sure the book is still being offered before purchasing.

Those outside of the U.S. will also need to check in with their retailers to see if the comic is available in your particular region.

And if you already bought the collection or can’t get the physical copy, fret not because there’s going to be another way to get your hands on some official Marvel vs. Capcom items soon.

Marvel is launching 11 Marvel vs. Capcom 2 cover art variants of their books releasing in December 2024 too.

The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection features seven arcade classic games from X-Men: Children of the Atom through MvC2 as well as The Punisher all in one package with extra features and options.

While the MvC Collection does include rollback netcode on all games, cross-platform play is not featured, so you’ll have to take that into account when picking up a copy too.

  • This footage of someone playing Street Fighter 6 and winning using a Taiko no Tatsujin drum controller is just as crazy as it sounds

Fighting game controllers come in all shapes and sizes, and over the years we’ve seen all manner of crazy contraptions being used to play our favorite titles. From the evolution of competitive peripherals leading to things like the creation of leverless controllers to people making fully functioning arcade sticks out of cardboard boxes, you’d think by now we had seen it all.

Well that’s not entirely the case as a clip from a player’s recent live stream features a look at something we certainly have never witnessed before. This footage features Street Fighter 6 being played on a Taiko no Tatsujin drum controller complete with drum stick, and it is surely a sight to behold.

Twitter user mizen5mizen recently uploaded a clip to the social media platform that was pulled from one of the Street Fighter 6 player’s recent live streams. In it, we see an online match underway with a webcam feed that shows the peripheral in action.

For those unfamiliar, Taiko no Tatsujin is a rhythm game series created by Namco that effectively acts similarly to Guitar Hero (though the former predates the latter), but the instrument you play is a taiko drum. This Japanese arcade game (that has also seen releases on home consoles) equips players with a big drum and a drum stick to strike along with the notes and rhythm of whatever song you’re playing.

Speaking of Guitar Hero, we have seen players attempt to play fighting games using the plastic guitar shaped controller in the past. And now we can add the taiko drum to the long list of crazy fighting game peripherals.

In the clip, mizen5mizen is playing Modern E. Honda, with the idea being that the simplified inputs that Modern Controls offer in Street Fighter 6 make it easier to navigate around and actually pull off attacks.

From the looks of it, specific areas on the drum that you can strike for notes in the Taiko no Tatsujin games have been mapped to various actions in Street Fighter 6. We see the player hit the drum in different areas and get things like Drive Impact, throw, and even assisted combos.

Mizen5mizen also moves Honda around the screen using the D-Pad that can be found on the controller itself. And what’s even more wild is that the drummer here can not only be seen playing fairly solidly, but actually winning their match.

  • Nearly 40% of top 64 players used 1 of 4 characters in Street Fighter 6 at Blink Respawn 2024 and just 1 didn’t see play at all

It feels like the action just started not that long ago, but the Capcom Pro Tour 2024 is already in the home stretch with another Capcom Cup 11 finalist earning a spot here very soon.

Blink Respawn 2024 is going down this weekend as the second-to-last CPT Premier event of the season drawing some of the best Street Fighter 6 talent in the world, and before the finals kick off, we’ve gathered the top 32 and 64 character stats for the tournament to see who made it farthest in the bracket.

Starting out with the top 32, we ended up seeing 15 of SF6’s current 24 characters receive main play with 10 of them being repeats.

Surprisingly, JP would be the most popular character of this upper bracket, which is similar to what we found during our recent Legend rank breakdown for the game, but none of the Psycho Powered accountants would crack the top 8.

Instead, the final day will include Ken, Rashid, Juri, Zangief, M. Bison and 2 Luke mains while some early favorites to go the distance at Respawn like Bandits|Caba and Illicit|Kusanagi falling short of the finish line.

In this part of the tournament, 43.8% of players mained one of the top 5 characters, and this top 32 represents the best 19.8% of players who signed up.

    • JP – 4 (2)

    • Ken – 3 (2)

    • M. Bison – 3 (1)

    • Akuma – 3 (1)

    • Luke – 3

    • Zangief – 3

    • Blanka – 2

    • Ed 2 -

    • Guile – 2

    • Rashid – 2

    • Terry – 1 (1)

    • A.K.I. – 1

    • Juri – 1

    • Marisa – 1

    • Ryu – 1

    • Cammy – 0 (2)

    • Chun-Li – 0 (1)

    • Dee Jay – 0

    • Dhalsim – 0

    • E. Honda – 0

    • Jamie – 0

    • Kimberly – 0

    • Lily – 0

    • Manon – 0

As for the top 64, all but one character saw play, which unsurprisingly ended up being Lily.

This is also seemingly the best performance we’ve seen out of Terry players at a CPT Premier so far though we still haven’t gotten to see the latest DLC character reach a major top 8 yet.

It probably comes at little shock that Ken and M. Bison are up at the very top in terms of popularity overall, however, getting 5 of each Ryu and Zangief that far in the tournament is more unexpected.

Between these top four characters, a whopping 37.5% of players mained at least one of them, but 16 fighters were chosen at least twice overall (plus secondary choices).

Overall, we’ve gotten to see a fairly varied tournament in the Dominican Republic even if the highest contenders to make things a bit more top heavy.

We could also have a double CPT Premier win season on our hands if Falcons|MenaRD manages to go the distance from the losers bracket.

You can check out the full top 64 character breakdown from Blink Respawn below as well as the chart up above to get some additional visual representation of the action this weekend.

    • Ken – 8 (2)

    • M. Bison – 6 (1)

    • Ryu – 5

    • Zangief – 5

    • Akuma – 4 (2)

    • JP – 4 2

    • Blanka – 3 (1)

    • Guile – 3

    • Juri – 3

    • Luke – 3

    • Rashid – 3

    • Cammy – 2 (2)

    • Ed – 2 (1)

    • Terry – 2 (1)

  • After live service flops, Warner Bros. to focus on 4 franchises for video games including Mortal Kombat

Warner Bros. Discovery has been in a rough spot financially for quite some time now, and that applies to their video games division this year especially as well.

It’s apparently gotten to the point where Warner Bros. Games is going to slim down their focus on future titles to revolve around four IP in particular.

The company held its quarterly earnings call earlier this week where WBD CEO David Zaslav stated their gaming division is “substantially underperforming its potential.”

And that’s certainly not all he had to say about Warner’s gaming ventures lately.

“I think we’re through some of the worst — and it hasn’t been pretty — on the gaming business,” said Zaslav via Insider Gaming. “But we have four games that are really powerful and have a real constituency that love them, and we’re going to focus on those four primarily. We’re going to go away from trying to launch 10, 12, 15, 20 different games. I think we have a real chance now with focus to have the gaming business be steadier.”

This comes as WB Games’ revenue declined by 31% year over year for the quarter ending on September 30 since Mortal Kombat 1’s strong launch boosted them during the period in 2023 — but apparently Khaos Reigns didn’t provide a similar jump.

Warner has a $300 million writedown for its games in 2024 with a majority of that attributed to the flop of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but that wasn’t their only big loss driver.

Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels revealed MultiVersus in particular underperformed this past quarter for the corporation, leading to an additional $100 million to reach that $300 million number they currently sit at.

So it seems they’re attempting to pull the reigns back and have a tighter direction aimed at four properties in particular.

“We have four strong and profitable game franchises with loyal, global fans: Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, and DC, in particular, Batman,” said Zaslav. “We are focusing our development efforts on those core franchises, with proven studios to improve our success ratio.”

This comes just a year after WB and Zaslav said they were putting more emphasis on live service and free to play titles, which appears to have largely backfired as their big loss leaders now.

That was an interesting move when Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 were their primary breadwinners at the time, but it may be part of a larger trend of large-scale games moving back away from live service that seem to have produced more disappointments than success stories across the industry the past few years.

And even with Mortal Kombat being labeled as one of Warner’s gaming pillars, it hasn’t been a fantastic time on that front lately either.

That’s largely from NetherRealm Studios laying off over 50 people across its entire mobile development team along with the shuttering of Mortal Kombat Onslaught just a year after launch.

Although it seems NRS may already be working on their next AAA title, that estimate of Warner supporting MK1 for 3–4 years is looking more likely now unless they want to move on sooner.

Having DC remaining a focus could also leave a new Injustice on the table too, but it’ll still be quite some time to learn more about what they’re working on.

The ultimate fate of MultiVersus remains up in the air too with the free to play platform fighter not living up to sales expectations after going dark with the beta for a year before popping back up in May with a full release.

Maybe the new season focused around some popular goth girls in DC’s Raven and Adventure Time’s Marceline can help give MultiVersus the boost it needs.

There were of course rumors too that Warner was looking to sell off some or all of its gaming division, but that seems to no longer be the case — or at least Mortal Kombat won’t be going anywhere.

  • The Marvel vs. Capcom 2 online equivalent of ‘What are you standing up for?’ happened against Justin Wong

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics received near universal praise upon its release, though many playing found that the online servers across multiple platforms were being tormented by a player known as the “Wazzler.” He was beating people so badly that they were apparently refunding the game afterwards.

It turns out that the Wazzler was Justin Wong all along. Needless to say, not too many people are able to say that they took the Wazzler down during their fateful encounter with him even when he’s playing low tier characters. Indeed, having even just one win over Justin Wong would be a massive accomplishment for just about any player.

One player almost managed to win against Wazzler, but a silly decision at the very end costed him this great honor. This is essentially a “What are you standing up for?” type of moment, but during a session of Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s online.

Wazzler was down to just using Sakura and the Silver Samurai. Both combatants were just barely hanging on in terms of their remaining life totals. The opponent, however, still had a healthy Sentinel, Cyclops, and Storm with just 31 seconds remaining in the match up.

This player ended up calling Storm at just the wrong time, giving Wazzler an opportunity to take her out with a hyper. This worked out well since Storm’s stamina was at its lowest of the opponent’s three characters, but Cyclops and Sentinel both still had over half their health bars remaining.

Wazzler opted to save Sakura from getting chipped out by calling in the Silver Samurai as the opponent attempted to play for the timer. Things were looking bad for the multi Evo champion, but a couple of openings afterwards against Sentinel brought the other player down to just Cyclops.

By this point, the Cyclops player was confident that he could just win through a timeout since Cyclops had more remaining health than Sakura and the Silver Samurai combined. As a result, he just kept running away until the timer hit zero.

Satisfied with his victory, the opponent apparently stood up and forfeited his defense. This gave Wazzler the one chance he needed to close the gap.

  • This mod for Shadow the Hedgehog might be the most polished fan-made character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate I’ve ever seen

Development of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and its post-launch content concluded on October 18, 2021 with the release of Kingdom Hearts’ Sora as the last DLC challenger, setting the final roster count to 86. Out of these 86 characters, Sonic is one fighter that’s gained quite a bit of notoriety in the competitive scene due to his emphasis on what is perceived as an extremely campy playstyle.

Regardless, it seems that many fans all over the world still dream of a Super Smash Bros. entry that features an even larger roster than that of Smash Ultimate’s. Of course, those experienced with hacking have figured out a way to unofficially implement their own visions for characters into the latest Smash title.

Recently, the Beefy Smash Doods showcased a mod that essentially injects Knuckles from Project M into Smash Ultimate. Despite Sonic’s problematic playstyle, it seems that there are many fans out there that would like to see another Sonic the Hedgehog rep mixing it up with the likes of Mario.

With that in mind, it seems the Beefy Smash Doods were once again contacted to check out another mod that also features a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. This particular mod makes Shadow the Hedgehog playable.

The timing of this mod’s showcase couldn’t be better as Shadow is set to debut in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie seemingly as the main antagonist on December 20, 2024. It’s interesting to note that Shadow is being voiced by Keanu Reeves, who has reportedly been taking the role very seriously by doing research to ensure that he properly captures the essence of the character with his voicework.

In any event, Shadow isn’t simply just a clone of Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While Sonic ends up being slightly faster than Shadow in terms of run speed, Shadow appears to boast a lot more power with his attacks.

Though Shadow does technically have a Spin Dash side special like Sonic, it’s functionally very different. Shadow’s air side special functions kind of like a homing attack that always goes straight. If Shadow hits a target, he’ll go into a flurry of punches and kicks, just like in some of the games that feature him. It’s demonstrated that this is a particularly high risk, high reward maneuver if used off stage.

Unlike Sonic, Shadow actually has a traditional projectile with his Chaos Spear special. Functionally, it’s pretty similar to Wolf’s Blaster. It’s fast and easy to spam, making it an excellent tool that controls the opponent’s movement.

Shadow’s grounded down special has him disappear so long as the special button is held. Once the action is released, Shadow will reappear at the scene with a burst of energy, similar to how Greninja’s Shadow Sneak works. Using the down special in the air will result in Shadow performing a dive kick instead.

Overall, Shadow is filled with unique animations that do an amazing job of referencing the source material for the character. The modder even went so far as to design unique victory animations for Shadow.

By the end of the video, the Beefy Smash Doods declare that Shadow has a fairly steep learning curve. Though Shadow’s mod page indicates that the character is currently only 90% complete, it feels like the most polished mod I’ve ever seen in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

  • New gameplay teaser revealed for Jinx in 2XKO

Just last month, the 2XKO developers revealed that Jinx’s appearance had been updated. This provided us with a new look at how Jinx will play in the upcoming 2v2 fighting game.

Earlier today, Riot games provided yet another glimpse at Jinx. This time, we even get a small glimpse at one of Jinx’s supers and we get to hear the voice acting for the character.

For her super, Jinx can be heard screaming “Look what I found!” She’s then seen riding on top of a giant pink mech that appears to resemble a monkey.

After a brief delay, the mech’s mouth opens which reveals a giant cannon from inside. Following this, the cannon will extend outward, likely preparing for a powerful attack.

Jinx is shown cancelling into this super after lifting the opponent with her mini-gun, which she refers to as her “Pow-Pow.” This implies that this super’s initial hit will aim upwards for the purpose of comboing these two attacks together.

Regardless, this mech is not part of Jinx’s normal set of abilities in League of Legends. As such, it would seem that the 2XKO developers have taken some creative liberties with the design of this new super.

  • 5 Street Fighter characters you’d stand a chance of beating in a fist fight

    Maybe…

The characters of Street Fighter are drawn in hyperbole often with impossibly massive muscles (not to mention hands and feet) along with abilities that allow them to shoot plasma beams, teleport, temporarily ignite their limbs, and teleport. Still, on a good day, we figure there may be a few of these fantasy characters we’d have a chance of winning against in a fist fight.

Sure, it’s a goofy concept to begin with, but it’s also kind of fun essentially drumming up what may amount to a weakest character list for Street Fighter. We’ve figured there are five characters that, given the impossible situation, we’d put a buck or two on ourselves to win against. Continue on to see who they are.

In some ways, Dan is the most obvious pick for this list. He’s famously a joke character who was originally created to be a mockery of some Art of Fighting characters as SNK and Capcom took IRL jabs at one another for borrowing content in the early era of fighting games.

Dan is filled with pride that usually blinds him from how poor he performs across virtually all fronts. He performs noticeably worse versions of Ryu and Ken’s moves, and only tends to ever win when other fighters feel sorry for him and decide to put him over.

In some depictions Dan’s belt is tied noticeably incorrectly, and his pink gi is rumored to be a result of his accidentally washing an originally white gi amid a load of bright red clothes. He makes other silly mistakes, such as forgetting to put his dojo phone number on flyers meant to build his business.

Despite his being the son of a great warrior, everything Dan does tends to end in some form of comedic failure, and so we figure that if we fought him, he’d find a way to inadvertently ensure our victory.

Dan, More or Less, In His Element

One of the newest characters to join the Street Fighter universe, Lily Hawk was added to Street Fighter 6’s launch roster as a spiritual successor to T. Hawk. T. Hawk has yet to reach top tier status in the games he’s featured in, and thus far Lily has followed his example closely.

Lily is one of SF6’s worst fighters from a tier list standpoint, but also doesn’t have much to boast about in terms of winning within the narrative. Her story is widely untold as we only know of a few, non-combative interactions she’s had with other characters.

She’s characterized by naivety and clumsiness, which is exemplified in her Critical Art animation as she slips and falls during the execution of her command grab. Lily does wield a pair of formidable pogamoggans (war clubs), but she’s also a little girl. Dhalsim does notice a “great power” lying dormant within her, and suggest it might be the Satui no Hado.

If this power awakens, Lily could become a monster of a fighter not unlike Akuma, but until it does, we feel like we could probably take her.

    Lily’s Hardest-Hitting Attack Is A Botch

At 6′ 10″ and nearly 240 pounds, Sodom is obviously a hulking beast of a human. That said, he’s one of the most ineffectual characters in Capcom’s Street Fighter/Final Fight universe, and that’s despite strong motivations.

Sodom is an American Japanophile, meaning he has an extremely strong interest in Japanese culture. This plays out to the point that Sodom identifies as Japanese and does his best to present as such, but in spite of the clear passion, he’s actually laughably bad at it.

His lacking grasp of the Japanese language is a source of comedy in Sodom’s short list of appearances, insisting on speaking in Japanese but always fumbling the words so that he makes goofy and nonsensical statements. He was able to ascend the ranks of the Mad Gear and gained notoriety for being undefeated in criminal underground wrestling matches, but that’s widely because he brought weapons to these fights where others were expecting only to wrestle.

Sodom has no notable wins amid any of his Street Fighter story lines, which are characterized by failure as he is often unable to achieve goals he sets out for himself, such as recruit E. Honda or defeat Guy. The closer we look at this character, the more we see that he’s fraudulent in almost every way – even in the avenues he’s most passionate about.

Sure, he’s still huge, but Sodom is all but a joke character who never seems to be able to make things go his way. We did say this would be a fist fight, and especially if he’s unable to use weapons like his sai or katana, we could see Sodom losing to anyone, perhaps by way of slipping on a banana peel and sealing his own fate.

Sodom Attempting To Talk Smack In Japanese After Winning

The one time we do see Sean win something is in Laura’s Street Fighter 3 arcade ending in Street Fighter 5. Laura is seen on the beach reading a magazine that shows Sean apparently winning a martial arts tournament, but here the focus is almost entirely on Laura as attention is quickly shifted away from Sean’s accomplishment and onto her leading training in her Brazilian jiu jitsu dojo.

We see Sean training behind Laura, though we know that he apparently goes on to abandon this fighting style as it isn’t represented Street Fighter 3, his one and only playable appearance thus far. Instead Sean tries to adopt a combination of shoto style and his own personal improvisations. It doesn’t go well, though, as Sean eventually becomes an annoying pupil of a hesitant Ken Masters.

Beating the game with Sean in Third Strike reveals an ending wherein he thinks he’s won, only to realize this was a dream from being knocked out in the preliminary rounds of the tournament. A frustrated Ken sends Sean away to go find and fight Ryu, which he does resulting only in repeated losses.

Sean is noticeably worried about being compared to Dan Hibiki, something that evidently happens often within the world of Street Fighter. He brings up Dan regularly as an example of weakness, which makes him come across as insecure. Given that Dan is the epitome of a joke character in this universe, the fact that people still do make comparisons doesn’t bode well for Mr. Matsuda.

It’s not to say that Sean might realize his goals and one day become a world class fighter, but he clearly isn’t there yet amid any of the instances we’ve seen him in. While we’re not confident we’d win in a game of one on one basketball, we feel we have a strong chance of landing a knock out punch in a hypothetical brawl with Sean.

Sean’s 3S Ending In Which He Wakes Up From A Victorious Dream To Realize He’s Been Knocked Out Early

This is easily the most controversial pick on our list, but hear us out. It’s true that Gen is often regarded as a contender for Street Fighter’s strongest character (he’s not, but he’s up there), and it’s true that he’s one of the most renowned assassins in all of China.

It’s also true, however, that he’s in a battle with late stage leukemia, and this hindrance is an active part of his theming and narrative. Still, we won’t sugar coat it. If Gen’s doing better than like 2% of his full potential, we’re done in a fight, but the more we see the old man the more we see him aging and coughing.

There’s reason to believe he’s actually dead by the time Street Fighter 6 rolls around on the timeline, but if he isn’t, perhaps he’s in a such a weakened state that we could actually hang.

  • One month later is Terry any good in Street Fighter 6? Brian_F shares where he thinks the latest DLC fighter lands on the tier list

Street Fighter 6’s latest DLC character is very special. One of the most popular fighters from SNK’s Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series, Terry Bogard, joined the playable roster not only as part of an epic crossover between the two legendary fighting game developers, but also as the first ever outside guest character in a mainline Street Fighter game.

However, despite looking absolutely broken in his gameplay trailer, players came to the conclusion fairly fast that the guest DLC combatant might not have been as strong as everyone initially thought. But how good (or bad) is he really? Prominent FGC content creator Brian_F recently released a video that analyzes and discusses where Terry stands here a month after his release and what that means for him on the tier list.

The opinions on Terry early on essentially landed in two main camps. Either people felt he was not very good at all here in Street Fighter 6, or he was about average with potential to grow.

Terry Bogard’s tool kit in Street Fighter 6 is fairly technical for sure, with solid execution not only required to play him well, but also a lot of awareness and knowledge of what options to use, when, at different ranges, and how.

There’s a lot that goes into playing Terry, which is why some folks wanted to give him some time to bake a bit before deciding what his actual strength might look like. Brian gives us the “one month later” analysis here, and he starts by covering some of the different tools Terry has at his disposal.

Among his strengths, Brian takes particular note of Terry’s unique level 2 super. Not only does it have a lot of utility in combos thanks to the ability Terry has to extend it with two follows up using extra Drive Gauge and Super, but when the full version is utilized it can deal really high damage.

As far as weaknesses go, Brian explains that while Terry has several strong meaty set ups using things like Burn Knuckle and projectiles, they tend to be very telegraphed and prone to being perfect parried. In addition to this, his fireball zoning game can have some interesting uses, but overall Terry can quickly find himself in a situation where he cannot keep up in a fireball war.

At the end of the day, Brian feels that Terry is actually a lot of fun to play in Street Fighter 6. That having been said, he places Terry around middle of the pack when it comes to the tier list, saying that he feels like characters such as Ryu or Ken are better, similar picks.
