  • Discussing Street Fighter 6’s most frustrating issue

After playing enough fighting games you naturally develop sensitivities and intuitions for how they feel and flow, and since the genre is so often explored on a frame by frame basis, our tuning tends to be extremely precise. Street Fighter 6 players have been experiencing what many are calling dropped inputs as it seems the game deviates, at times, from traditional feel and flow.

Frustrations surrounding inputs have been fairly prominent since the game launched back in June, and still continue here some four months later. The community has been exploring what exactly is going on, and while we don’t have all answers, we are now able to highlight a handful of various input issues and begin to understand what they are as well as what they aren’t.

Catalyst, DreamKing, and I put these issues under the microscope as we explore why it feels like we often experience incorrect moves, eaten inputs, (which actually isn’t really what’s going on) and other similar scenarios.

    Overly Lenient Input Windows

The first of these we discuss seems to stem from the amount of leniency Street Fighter 6 gives in terms of the amount of time players have to hit all necessary inputs for a particular special maneuver.

Lily might be the most regularly affected character here and so we use her as an example, but many players have expressed this issue being present for most all fighters across the roster.

Certain sequences will naturally include a few different special moves throughout, and Lily’s bread and butter knock downs into her Wind Clad power up is something she’ll do in just about every round.

After you knock an opponent down with a Condor Spire (quarter circle forward + kick) you can instantly perform her Wind Clad buff (quarter circle backwards + punch) and safely store a stock, but all too often players will get other special moves instead of the aforementioned Wind Clad buff.

This appears to be because SF6 is actually too lenient with how many frames it will accept between each of the necessary inputs for specials, and thus when players accidentally hit an extra stray input or two with their control sticks, it’s enough to completely change the desired special move.

    Drive Rush and “Eating” Inputs

The other major complain people tend to have surrounds the Drive Rush mechanic, specifically because performing freezes the screen for a split second. It seems as though inputs can be eaten if they’re performed during or near this screen freeze, but that doesn’t exactly seem to be the case.

As explored in detail by The Big Nasty Kail, the game gets a little weird as the Drive Rush freeze interacts with buffer windows. To understand this, we need to first appreciate buffer windows.

Characters will enter locked out animations many times every round, as every time they perform an attack, are in block/hit stun, or perform a maneuver like dashing, jumping, or even standing up, there is a period where inputs are simply not allowed and thus will not manifest on screen.

All of these situations have a buffer window at the last few frames where, although a character is still stuck completing an animation, players can begin inputting their next maneuver so that their character will perform it the moment they’re free to do so.

This all takes place in the span of just a few sixtieths of a second, but muscle memory keys in with extreme precision and many have frustratedly found their characters not doing maneuvers inputted during buffer windows.

This seems to be because the Drive Rush screen freeze also slightly delays the timing of when a given buffer window begins, meaning that players are likely inputting command a tad too early.

It’d be one thing if this was a consistent happening that were predictable enough for players to adapt to while playing Street Fighter 6, but use of Drive Rush varies heavily, and thus consistency becomes all but impossible.

There are multiple other facets of the input discussion we get to in the full Talk and Block discussion below.

Check it out and be sure to share your thoughts and personal experiences in the comments (please copy them into the comments of the YouTube video directly on YouTube as well) as we continue to ask developers to roll out more quality of life fixes on the inputs front.

  • Untangling the Controversy Between TikTokers Lunden Stallings and Olivia Bennett

    – Influencer duo Lunden Stallings and Olivia Bennett faced backlash after racist tweets from Lunden’s past resurfaced during their honeymoon.
    – The couple made a 10-minute apology video on TikTok, but it did not stop the online criticism.
    – Some people took issue with the video being posted on Stories, and others criticized them for getting married at a wedding venue with ties to a plantation owner.

    Full Story

Lunden Stallings and Olivia Bennett, a popular influencer couple with a massive TikTok following, found themselves in an unexpected predicament shortly after their wedding. The newlyweds, who were basking in the joy of their marital bliss, were suddenly thrust into a whirlwind of controversy when Lunden’s past racist tweets resurfaced. This unfortunate series of events unfolded just days after their lavish ceremony, which was hailed by fans as the “royal wedding of lesbian TikTok.”

The controversy ignited when screenshots of Lunden’s old tweets containing racial slurs started circulating on Reddit. Although the offensive posts had been deleted, they seemed to date back to as early as the 2010s. Faced with considerable backlash, the couple took to TikTok to release a 10-minute apology video on their Stories, expressing deep regret and shame for Lunden’s past behavior. Lunden emphasized her disgust and stated that she did not intend to ignore or evade the issue, affirming her commitment to address it sincerely.

However, their attempt to reconcile with their audience did not extinguish the online criticism. Some questioned why the apology video was shared on Stories, where posts expire after 24 hours. In addition, others criticized the couple for choosing a wedding venue with historical ties to a plantation owner, further fueling the controversy. Naylor Hall, where the ceremony took place, was built by Barrington King, the son of Roswell King, a prominent figure in the cotton industry and owner of plantations operated by enslaved individuals.

Despite the ongoing backlash, Lunden and Olivia have chosen not to respond publicly to the criticisms surrounding their apology video. It remains to be seen how they will navigate these challenges and rebuild their reputation within the TikTok community and beyond.

  • The sexiest gender swapped Jason Voorhees cosplay you could ever want to help celebrate Friday the 13th

In some parts of the world, folks can feel a fresh chill in the air right now. We’re officially in the spookiest month of the year, but this October has added an extra layer of spooky to the mix by having its own Friday the 13th — which is today.

Whenever Friday the 13th rolls around, it’s not uncommon to see people sharing their favorite content related to the legendary Friday the 13th movie series featuring classic slasher Jason Voorhees. It’s us, we’re people, and to honor Jason and his playable appearance in Mortal Kombat X back in 2015, today we’re taking a look at some of the best gender swapped Jason Voorhees Friday the 13th cosplay we could find on the internet.

Before we get into it, though, first let’s talk a little back story. Back on May 5, 2015, Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th fame joined the Mortal Kombat X roster as a DLC character.

That installment of Mortal Kombat featured several Horror icons as guest characters, including Leatherface from A Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Xenomorph from 1979’s Alien.

In Mortal Kombat X, Jason was a tank character who could walk right through oncoming attacks, resurrect himself, and slash foes with powerful machete strikes. His Fatalities even paid homage to some of his kills from the films, including the iconic sleeping bag finisher.

All of that having been said, Jason isn’t really a character that exudes sexiness. However, in 2014 premium figure company Kotobukiya created a Freddy vs. Jason series that depicted both slashers as sexy anime girls, and that rendition is the inspiration for pretty much all of the cosplay we have here today.

Kicking things off with a veteran in the cosplay game, we have Danielle Vedovelli’s incredible Jason cosplay. Danie has been featured here on the site several times, and these Friday the 13th cosplay images are oldies, but goodies.

Danielle’s interpretation of Jason follows the Kotobukiya statue very closely. This can be identified by traits such as the hockey mask hanging on the side of her head and the tattered pants.

Needless to say, Vedovelli’s cosplay is spot on here as she slays (in more ways than one) with this spooky getup.

Nichameleon brings another gorgeous Jason Voorhees cosplay to the table, but also adds in a bit of lightheartedness to the mix.

The costume is spot on, and while you’ll definitely see the sexy side of this Jason up front, scrolling through the images on Instagram will present a handful of silly shots of this cosplayer simply having a great time with the photo shoot.

Regina_cosplay’s Jason Voorhees shows a little more skin than the others, and on top of being beautiful, absolutely crushes the details in the tattered clothing.

Numi R’s Friday the 13th cosplay comes off as sweet, but looks can be deceiving. You’ll be lured in by the beauty, but keep an eye on that big axe in this cosplayer’s hand…

We close out with another great Jason Voorhees cosplay from LaineyCat. This depiction also follows the Kotobukiya design, and what I really like about Lainey’s is the use of a prop knife that gives it more of a classic Halloween costume feel bringing on all of the nostalgia.

  • Jamie steals Chun-Li’s spot among the most popular characters used at Rookie rank in Street Fighter 6’s September usage stats

A fresh batch of Street Fighter 6 online character usage stats has been released by Capcom. This time, we get to see who the most popular characters were for the month of September across various rank ranges.

Within these usage stats, there have been a handful of shifts in placement from the previous month. One of the most interesting changes, though, is that despite his low tier status Jamie has pushed Chun-Li out of the top 5 for most used characters in Rookie rank.

The August 2023 stats showed that Rookie ranked players gravitated most toward some of the most popular faces in the franchise’s history. Juri sat at #1 most used in Rookie, followed by Cammy, Ken, Luke, and finally Chun-Li.

Street Fighter 6’s initial newcomers have been quite popular since they got officially revealed, and it looks like people still love Jamie even though he isn’t considered all too good in the current version of the game. The drunken boxing fighter managed to snatch up the #5 spot on the top 5 Rookie list in September.

Moving up to the Iron through Gold ranks, there really isn’t too much different here. Comparing the last two months of stats, we see that the only change in this category is that Juri and Cammy have swapped places, with Juri now sitting at #2 and Cammy at #3.

In September, higher ranked players — Platinum through Master — still favored Ken over any other character in the game. Widely considered one of, if not, the best fighter in the entire game, it makes sense why those who play the game seriously would opt to choose him over other characters on the roster.

This category did see some shifts in placements, as well as a new character enter the top 5. In August, the rest of the top 5 consisted of Marisa, Ryu, Cammy, and Juri in that order.

The top 5 most used characters among Platinum through Master ranked players in September was made up of Ken, Ryu, Marisa, Luke, and Cammy. It’s surprising to see someone like Ryu be among the most used when he too isn’t considered all that strong in the game, however, Ken and Ryu often topped the popularity charts back in Street Fighter 5 as well, and Ryu was in a similar low tier boat back then.

  • SNK’s new ‘Universe Project’ aims to launch King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown onto new mediums

We in the fighting game community are more than well aware of SNK’s notable properties, but the company feels like the rest of the world isn’t appreciating the likes of King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, and Fatal Fury like it should.

Enter the new SNK Universe Project, an endeavor aimed at growing global awareness and engagement of SNK content by diversifying it across multiple forms of entertainment.

Details are somewhat sparse on exactly how SNK will go about achieving all this, though it seems the Universe Project will be a relatively large undertaking.

“SNK will branch out from the fighting game genre for which it is so well known,” notes the press release, “and even traverse entertainment mediums entirely by entering the worlds of manga, anime, film, and music (among others).”

We’ve seen a number of video games garner shows on platforms such as Netflix in recent years, and it would only reason that with the major successes of films such as the Mario and Sonic movies, film and television production companies would be more willing to take on gaming IPs.

More on the Universe Project will be revealed at New York Comic Con 2023, which runs from October 12-15, 2023 in New York City via a MANGA DIVE total immersion production. We actually know of at least one other fighting game announcement en route for the event, so it should be fruitful for the FGC.

For more information now, check out the SNK news page and let us know in the comments what you hope to see from this exciting new endeavor.
