  • Masahiro Sakurai almost chose this character for the Castlevania slot in place of Simon and Richter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features a cast consisting of 86 characters following the release of all DLC. Though there were plenty of guests added to the game as post-launch content, Castlevania was the only new third party franchise that had representation within the base roster.

Simon Belmont and Richter Belmont were chosen to be playable characters, but Masahiro Sakurai had apparently considered another challenger to represent the Castlevania series before settling on the Belmonts. According to Sakurai, a Castlevania rep was highly requested during the Smash Ballot (from the era of Super Smash Bros. 4), but it wasn’t entirely clear at first who it should’ve been.

“After Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Wii U, we conducted the fighter ballot and the series was highly requested,” stated Sakurai according to a translation by Source Gaming. “In addition, when I went to decide new content for Smash Ultimate, my options were quite limited.”

“The problem with Castlevenia is that that the protagonists change quite often. If anything, there are probably more people who are familiar with Alucard.” — Masahiro Sakurai

Castlevania isn’t like the Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda series in which there’s a consistent protagonist like Mario or Link. Within this franchise, the protagonist tends to change going from one game to the next.

“The problem with Castlevenia is that that the protagonists change quite often,” continued Sakurai while laughing. “If anything, there are probably more people who are familiar with Alucard.”

It’s interesting to note that Alucard actually made his debut appearance within the Castlevania series in Castlevania 3. He was one of the three supporting characters to that game’s protagonist, Trevor Belmont.

Of course, a player may only have one supporting character alongside Trevor at a time. Most players tend to favor one of the other two, Sypha Belnades and Grant Danasty, as being superior choices over Alucard.

“If I had went with [Alucard], then there wouldn’t have been any connection to the Belmont lineage.” — Masahiro Sakurai

Alucard’s role within Castlevania would be greatly elevated in Symphony of the Night when he was made the protagonist. Though this wasn’t the first attempt to turn Castlevania into the “Metroidvania” game style it’s now generally perceived to be, it is the game that really transformed the series.

For a lot of fans of Castlevania, Alucard might have actually been more recognizable than Simon and Richter. However, choosing Alucard over them would’ve presented a couple of different problems in Sakurai’s mind.

“If I had went with [Alucard], then there wouldn’t have been any connection to the Belmont lineage,” continued Sakurai while apparently laughing again.

It’s also worth noting that the weapon typically utilized by the Belmont clan is known as the Vampire Killer. As a dhampir (half-human, half-vampire), Alucard would be unwilling to wield such a weapon.

Needless to say, Sakurai felt that it would be a little bizarre to not have the Vampire Killer represented in this way considering that Castlevania is a series that’s essentially about hunting vampires. Indeed, the weapon is just too iconic to not include.

Being that Simon and Richter are the first whip users in the Super Smash Bros. series, we can also see how them getting in offered players a brand new playstyle. Even compared to most sword users, the Belmonts’ reach ranks among the highest in Smash.

Additionally, we also have to note that Alucard probably wouldn’t have a suitable Echo Fighter like the relationship between Simon and Richter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. So choosing Alucard would’ve actually resulted in us getting one less character (even if Simon and Richter do effectively function identically).

Ultimately, Alucard was relegated to being an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Considering that characters like Little Mac, Dark Samus, and Isabelle have since been promoted from Assist Trophies to being playable, there’s still hope for Alucard fans in terms of his potential in the future.

As it turns out, Nintendo has recently unveiled the Switch 2. For now, only a new Mario Kart has been revealed for the mysterious new console, but we suspect that Super Smash Bros. will likely make its way there at some point considering its reported sales.

Incidentally, Sakurai has been working on a secret game project since April 2022. Could this be the next iteration of the Super Smash Bros. series on the Switch 2?

Though Simon and Richter were chosen over Alucard, it does seem like Alucard does have a lot to offer as a potential character alongside the Belmonts. Overall, Alucard feels like he has a decently high chance of becoming playable in the future.

With the Nintendo Switch 2 focused Direct set for April 2025, there’s at least a decent possibility that Sakurai’s secret game project gets announced then. We’ll just have to see what happens when that time rolls around.

  • Ogre debut trailer revealed for Under Night In-Birth 2, releases February 20

The Evo Awards promised a bunch of new fighting game reveals tonight, and the first comes to us from French Bread.

Arc System Works had a new trailer to share for Under Night In-Birth 2 [Sys:Celes] to show off Ogre in the game as well as give his release date.

Although he was thought to be dead, Ogre is seemingly alive and walking the streets again looking for a purpose.

But more importantly, he’s about to be playable for the first time as the second DLC character for UNI2.

Perhaps the fighter will find a new purpose with his next lease on life.

The King of Devils is an in-your-face brawler with a flurry of strikes and kicks at his disposal plus some moves to help him get in the opponent’s face.

Following the bone witch Uzuki from last year, Ogre is set to join the roster in just a few days on February 20, 2025 with Izumi still slated for an August release window though still no exact date yet.

Cygames also revealed the full Season 2 DLC lineup for Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising at the Evo Awards tonight.

You can check out the gameplay debut trailer for Ogre in Under Night below.

  • Beefy Smash Doods hosted a modded character tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate featuring competitive European players

It’s still mind blowing that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a roster featuring 86 characters. As impressive as this is, fans will always want even more challengers to join the fight.

Due to this, there are those that have taken it upon themselves to create mods that allow players to use fighters that have never been playable in the Super Smash Bros. series thus far. This provides us with a small taste of what these combatants could be like should they ever actually get selected for future entries.

Throughout many videos, the Beefy Smash Doods have been highlighting some of the better made characters added to Super Smash Bros. via modding. How effective would these challengers be in a tournament setting?

To answer this question, the Beefy Smash Doods recently hosted a tournament to determine which of the modded fighters would be the most competitive. They ended up inviting CurryGovernor, Hope, Joni, Snormanda, AndresFn, Supahsemmie, NaetorU, and Tarik, who are all notable players within the competitive European scene.

All of the competitors will have access to 16 modded characters consisting of Kamek, Krystal, Waluigi, Silver the Hedgehog, Alucard, Sans, Knuckles the Echidna, Blaziken, Masked Man, Sandbag, Goku, Bomberman, Funky Kong, Shadow the Hedgehog, Toad, and Gogeta.

They’ve all been given access to all 16 combatants over the course of several weeks to practice with. When the tournament happened, each of the players were tasked with selecting one character that they had to stick with throughout the entire event. No two players can select the same fighter.

There’s quite a lot on the line as the winner will get the lion’s share of the €965 prize pool (which is about equivalent to 1,012.91 USD). Check it all out below:

  • Rising Season 2 in new trailer

    Sandalphon releases February 26

Cygames came to the Evo Awards tonight with a special announcement for Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising.

The developers revealed every character coming to the game’s second season of DLC.

We already knew Sandalphon was coming up first here in GBVSR Season 2, but now the full roster of five new fighters have been filled out.

After our winged boy, Galleon will be the second character to come in the new season with the compassionate dragon ready to tame her opponents with earth magic.

Third in line is the fiery dragon Wilnas, who will take the opposite approach and smack his foes about with his fists.

Meg follows that in the fall, and it seems she’ll be bringing some sharks to the water with her — so be careful.

Finally, there’s Isla coming early 2026 with the demon sergeant ready to put you all back in line in the new year with her drills… and guns.

    • Sandalphon – February 26

    • Galleon – Spring 2025

    • Wilnas – Summer 2025

    • Meg – Fall 2025

    • Ilsa – Early 2026

And then Season 2 will kick off before the end of this month with Sandalphon finally coming to Granblue Versus on February 26.

Knowing Cygames, there looks to be new moves / mechanics and content on the way with the new season too.

French Bread and Arc System Works also revealed Ogre’s debut trailer for Under Night In-Birth 2 [Sys:Celes] at the event.

  • Nen Impact as first DLC character, release date revealed

Arc System Works have had a pretty busy night at the Evo Awards with announcements for Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and Under Night In-Birth 2, but they weren’t done there.

The publisher also revealed a new trailer for Hunter X Hunter: Nen Impact that unveiled the Season Pass and release date.

The trailer begins going over all of the modes and characters included in the base game coming out this year, but that’s not all they had to show.

Nephelpito was also announced as Nen Impact’s first DLC character for Season Pass 1, who will come out in Fall 2025.

There will be four new fighters in total added to the game with the second coming in the Winter followed by the third in early 2026 and the last in Summer 2026.

Following the delay out of last year, the Hunter X Hunter fighting game is set to release this Summer on July 17, 2025 for the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

And yes it’ll have rollback netcode for online play.

A Limited Edition of Nen Impact was confirmed as well including the base game, Season Pass 1, acrylic stands of Gon and Killua, in-game skins for Kurapika and Hisoka, and a booklet all inside a special illustrated box.

  • Kain R. Heinlein announced for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

Fatal Fury’s return has been focusing mostly on its heroes since the new game was revealed last year, but it’s finally time to see what the “bad guys” are up to.

SNK just announced Kain R. Heinlein as the newest playable character for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves with a gameplay trailer at the Evo Awards to show off what he can do after 25 years.

Kain previously only appeared in Garou: Mark of the Wolves as a special final boss, and he was only playable through a secret code on the character select screen.

Now he can let loose on the main roster for the first time ever, and he’s not here to play around.

Rock Howard’s uncle has back some familiar normals as well as specials like Schwarze Flamme, Schwarze Panzer, Schwarze Stoß and his Supers Himmlische Atem and Himmlische Seele.

The previous extra boss seems to have a few new tricks up his fancy sleeves too with what looks like a new trap and all of the REV bonuses provided by the systems in City of the Wolves.

It’ll also be interesting to see if SNK keeps Kain as a charge character like in Garou or if they’ll change him to motions or even a mix of both.

The brother-in-law of Geese Howard marks the 14th character announced for the base roster following Gato and Kim Dong Hwan, but there should still remain just a few more we have yet to see.

Kain will also be one of the eight playable characters available in the Fatal Fury open beta coming next week, so fans won’t have to wait very long to try him out for themselves.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is slated to release on April 24, 2025 on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

You can check out the trailer and official screenshots for Kain’s long-awaited return below.

  • City of the Wolves DLC, Open Beta Test roster revealed

Fatal Fury kicked off its DLC reveals with a surprise last year for Street Fighter’s Ken and Chun-Li crossing over, and now we know the rest of who’s coming in the first year.

SNK just announced the full Season 1 Pass DLC character lineup for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves along with the Open Beta Test roster.

Joining Chun and Ken are longtime Fatal Fury staples Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi as shown off in their official new portraits for the game.

Andy is looking pretty suave but similar to his classic attire while Joe had to get glasses and is wearing some decked out shorts in terms of both details and sponsors.

We technically have another crossover DLC character too with Art of Fighting’s Mr. Big showing up here looking a good bit older than before, which makes sense with the timeline of the franchises.

Perhaps Mr. Big will help tie into the new Art of Fighting game that’s now in development over at SNK.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Season 1 DLC Characters

    • Andy Bogard (Summer 2025)

    • Ken Masters (Summer 2025)

    • Joe Higashi (Fall 2025)

    • Chun-Li (Winter 2025)

    • Mr. Big (Early 2026)

These reveals also confirm Ken and Chun-Li will indeed be using their Street Fighter 6 designs as their default in Fatal Fury over their classics, which is not what happened when Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui came to SF6 — though they at least offered both options over there.

As for the beta, the eight playable characters are Terry, Mai, Rock Howard, B. Jenet, Hotaru, Preecha, Vox Reaper and the newly announced Kain R. Heinlein.

As was previously announced, the beta will be open to everyone on PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S and PC starting next Thursday, February 20, at midnight PT and run through Monday, February 24, at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves Open Beta Test Characters

    • Mai Shiranui

    • Rock Howard

    • Hotaru Futaba

    • Preecha

    • B. Jenet

    • Vox Reaper

Users will have access to Ranked Match, Casual Match and Room Matches as well as a Tutorial mode during the beta.

  • Top 10 worst match ups in Street Fighter 6 by the numbers

One character stands out as having the most polarizing match ups in the entire game

Capcom has released the latest stats for Street Fighter 6, and I wanted to specifically take a look at the top 10 worst match ups in the game, based on ranked matches with Master ranked players being the only ones factored into the equation.

Technically, there’s 11 match ups here, since there’s a 5-way tie for 7th place, but if you’ve ever wondered which match ups are the hardest in the game, Capcom has provided statistical proof of the most difficult match ups to overcome in Street Fighter 6.

    1. Dhalsim beats Zangief 6.4 to 3.6

    2. Dhalsim beats Lily 6.0 to 4.0

    3. JP beats Guile 5.9 to 4.1

    3. Dhalsim beats JP 5.9 to 4.1

    3. E. Honda beats Dhalsim 5.9 to 4.1

    3. E. Honda beats Blanka 5.9 to 4.1

    7. JP beats Zangief 5.7 to 4.3

    7. M. Bison beats Dhalsim 5.7 to 4.3

    7. Dhalsim beats Marisa 5.7 to 4.3

    7. Dee Jay beats Dhalsim 5.7 to 4.3

    7. Dhalsim beats Ed 5.7 to 4.3

Dhalsim is listed 8 times in the 11 worst match ups here, making him hands down the most polarizing character in the game.

He also tends to be at or near the bottom of the list in terms of character popularity, with the ranks of Lily, Blanka and E. Honda. So while he has intense match ups, it’s still fairly rare to run into Dhalsim compared with most of the cast.

Whether you’re on the winning or losing end of the bad match ups here, it’s good information to keep in mind as you play Street Fighter 6, to understand how much of an uphill or downhill run your opponents are facing.

If you want to go further, make sure you check out our Capcom Cup qualifier and World Warrior finals character stats with all 48 spots filled for Street Fighter 6.
