  • Maximilian Dood speculates on potential hints for Marvel vs. Capcom 4 with the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection

It’s been nearly eight years since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite was released. Of course, some fans might not even count Infinite as truly being part of the MvC series since it felt so different from previous entries. For those fans, it’s been over 13 years since Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released.

Though it’s been a long wait, we’re now seeing signs that Marvel and Capcom are willing to collaborate again with the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. It’s interesting to note that the collection recently released a new patch.

Perhaps the most unexpected thing about this patch is that it introduced new Marvel vs. Capcom themed artwork. It certainly is curious that Capcom is creating new artwork for games that were released over 25 years ago at this point.

Additionally, the latest patch added a total of four new songs to the game’s album. In one of his latest videos, Maximilian Dood highlights these points as being potential hints that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 could actually be in the cards.

Needless to say, Maximilian does a real deep dive into a number of possibilities. For example, the fourth song in the album is titled “Credits: Promise of Reunion.”

While all of this might be coming off as a “tin foil hat conspiracy theory,” there actually is precedent for Capcom doing this sort of thing before. Notably, Capcom released conceptual artwork for Mega Man 11 in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2.

At the time, Mega Man 11 hadn’t even been announced yet. Fans speculated that Capcom was hinting that a new Mega Man entry was in production with this mysterious artwork included in the collection. This theory turned out to be true.

  • Former president of PlayStation feels that Nintendo is losing its identity with the Switch 2

Nintendo recently unveiled their upcoming Swtich 2 which is set to launch on June 5, 2025. As expected, the Switch 2 offers a lot of improvements over its predecessor, the Switch. However, it doesn’t really offer too much in terms of innovation this time around compared to Nintendo’s previous consoles.

In a clip highlighted by Easy Allies, former president of PlayStation Shuhei Yoshida discussed his reactions to the announcement of the Switch 2. Evidently, Yoshida actually felt somewhat disappointed by the Switch 2.

“To me, it was a bit of a mixed message from Nintendo,” said Yoshida. “I think Nintendo is losing their identity, in my opinion.”

“To me, it was a bit of a mixed message from Nintendo. I think Nintendo is losing their identity, in my opinion.” — Shuhei Yoshida

It’s honestly kind of amazing how Nintendo has been able to compete with other console developers despite sticking with cheaper hardware and tech. Rather than impressing fans with the specs of their consoles, they instead always pushed for creating unique gameplay experiences that couldn’t really be found on other devices (though it can be argued that others would often copy Nintendo afterwards).

While the Switch 2 is effectively just a better Switch, the new mouse functionality is an interesting new addition for Nintendo. As such, Nintendo actually spent quite a bit of time during their recent Direct simply talking about how the Switch 2 has improved over its predecessor.

“For me, they are always about creating some new experience, like designing hardware and games, together to create that amazing experience,” continued Yoshida.

“But the Switch 2, as we all anticipated, is a better Switch, right? It has a larger screen, a more powerful processor, higher resolution… and they even have the hardware person starting the stream like other platforms do.”

“Because it’s a better Switch, the core premise of the whole Switch 2 is ‘We made things better.’ And that’s something other companies have been doing all the time.” — Shuhei Yoshida

Yoshida then goes on to talk about how Nintendo is now basically just following along with other companies like Sony and Microsoft. The argument is that they’re just producing a better version of the last console rather than innovating new features that can lead to different gameplay experiences.

“Because it’s a better Switch, the core premise of the whole Switch 2 is ‘We made things better.’ And that’s something other companies have been doing all the time,” declared Yoshida.

“Of course, it’s a more powerful Switch, so it’s great if your gaming was only on Nintendo hardware. It’s the first time for you to be able to play amazing games like Elden Ring, but for the core gamers who own multiple [pieces of hardware] like the PlayStation, Xbox, or PC, the games they showed off, especially from third parties, were… well, in theory, it’s amazing to have all these all-stars of industry games on Nintendo hardware. However, what they showed were like… ooh…”

Though the Switch 2 is essentially just a more advanced version of the Switch, it’s being price at $449.99, which has been a huge controversy amongst the gaming community. Nintendo also had to cancel their original preorder date in the U.S. due to concerns regarding tariffs, but recently rescheduled it for April 24.

Will the Switch 2 be worth that price tag, or will the console end up as another disappointment like the Wii U ended up being? We’ll just have to see how things play out to find out.

  • Top Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player Riddles releases his Street Fighter 6 Season 2 tier list for 2025

Earlier this year, Luminosity Gaming revealed their top 50 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players for the year 2024. Riddles ended up getting ranked as the 31st best player in the world.

However, it’s interesting to note that Riddles is also a Street Fighter 6 player. He recently released a new tier list covering Street Fighter 6 Season 2 in the year 2025. All 25 characters currently in Street Fighter 6 have been divided up into the S tier, A tier, B tier, C tier, and D tier categories.

The best characters in the game according to Riddles are Rashid, Mai Shiranui, M. Bison, Ken, Akuma, and Cammy. Many of these characters have been dominant in the tournament scene.

Of course, it’s also interesting to note how characters like JP, Ryu, and Ed have seen a number of major successes in recent times. Riddles has ranked these combatants (along with six others) in the A tier category.

Players will have to work a little harder to win with Chun-Li, Blanka, Luke, Kimberly, and Manon. They can be found in the B tier group as a result.

The worst characters in the game right now are said to be Jamie, Marisa, E. Honda, Lily, and Dhalsim. Marisa seems to have it even worse than the other four as she’s alone in the D tier category.

  • Capcom may have underestimated how tricky of a character Elena is for her Street Fighter 6 release

Past quotes about the character from her Ultra Street Fighter 4 release shine light on how difficult she is to implement

For those of you who lived through Elena’s Ultra Street Fighter 4 release back in 2014, you know Elena’s Healing as one of the most infamous moves in the entire franchise.

It allowed Elena to take damage and fill up her Ultra meter, which in turn could be used to do Healing and replenish her life. Tying Elena’s Healing to her Ultra is often cited as one of the worst decisions the developers made during Street Fighter 4’s lifespan.

The fighting game community largely expected Elena to come out in Street Fighter 6 before her official June 5, 2025 release date, because of how many things are tied into her being added to the game, namely the Capcom Pro Tour which has a $2 million dollar prize pool.

Also, major balance changes for Season 3 and potentially new costumes may come packaged with Elena, but no official word has been given at this time about these things.

“Even if you have a solid gameplan with [Elena’s] Healing, it’s still extremely difficult and extremely situational to use,” — former Capcom developer right after Ultra Street Fighter 4’s console release.

However, Elena is a character with a history of majorly upsetting the balance of Street Fighter games, and this is largely tied to her Healing mechanic, which Capcom heavily underestimated previously, despite being warned about it by the playerbase.

During Elena’s introduction video for Ultra Street Fighter 4, a former Capcom developer noted that her Ultra 1 (Brave Dance) was the one to select over Ultra 2 (Healing), but this did not pan out in terms of how the character was consistently played in high stakes tournament matches.

“The primary Ultra of choice for Elena should be Brave Dance, and that’s because it gives you damage. If you’re using Healing, there are very few scenarios where you can use Healing safely without the opponent catching you,” a former Capcom developer said immediately after the character’s console release in Ultra Street Fighter 4.

“Even if you have a solid gameplan with Healing, it’s still extremely difficult and extremely situational to use,” the former Capcom developer added.

These words clearly did not hold up long term, as numerous pro players played the character and used her Healing move relentlessly to win matches.

Capcom has already stated that they’re aware of Elena’s Healing mechanic and that the playerbase shouldn’t be worried about it in Street Fighter 6, but given their past statements and how difficult Elena is to balance, I wonder if their team heavily underestimated how difficult the capoeira fighter is to add to the game.

Considering we’re only getting four characters per season in Street Fighter 6, it’s very important that each fighter makes a significant impact on the roster and the game itself.

Releasing a heavily watered down Elena that no one cares about or plays wouldn’t be in Capcom’s best interests, as they need the sales and hype that surrounds these characters to maintain momentum.

From past statements and how she’s ended up being way too strong in the past, Elena is one of the most difficult characters to balance that they could have been added to the game, and she’s not even particularly high up in various polls that have been ran asking players which fighters they’d most like to see.

Because of her Healing mechanic and generally annoying personality, Elena is not well regarded by the playerbase, nor in the actual story of the game itself, as most of the cast find her annoying and creepy.

While she was being added to Ultra Street Fighter 4, the developers specifically called Elena a “tricky” character, and given how much she’s been delayed out of her expected window, and how haphazard her release date announcement has been, I wonder if they’ve heavily underestimated just how difficult of a character Elena is to add into Street Fighter 6.

  • A lot of Mortal Kombat’s special moves were added after the developers had captured the actors

Limited resources were a big factor in the development of the original game

While it’s nice to know your exact destination when you set out on a journey, it’s not always easy to plan where you’re going to end up in advance, especially when it came to video game development 30 years ago.

Take the 1992 release of the Mortal Kombat for example, as series co-creator Ed Boon was asked if the original’s special moves were all fully planned out in advance, or if the team was just experimenting with things during the development process.

“There weren’t that many special moves that we actually captured,” said Boon, noting that Scorpion’s spear and Sonya’s leg grab were two attacks they had actually intended to capture during the filming session with the actors.

“A lot of [special moves] came long after we had video taped the actors,” Boon stated. “They were just using existing frames of animation, so we just put something in.

“Johnny Cage’s Shadow Kick was just his side kick, we just made a whole bunch of duplicates of it and it’s this really cool effect,” Boon mentioned.

“So a lot of these things were just constructed, Sonya’s Square Wave Punch, we never captured that, it was long after the fact,” noted Boon.

“A lot of it was very spontaneous, keep in mind, this is four guys in their 20s set loose, that’s why it’s so visceral, we grew up in the 80s watching action movies, Enter the Dragon, Star Wars, everything like that,” Boon said.

Next, Boon discusses the limited resources the development team on the original Mortal Kombat had to work with, citing low memory as a big hurdle to work around.

“Everything was on EPROM chips, and each one of those cost money, so every time we added memory that added cost to the game and lowered profits, so it was all a constant negotiation,” he said.

“That was so instilled in us, that when we came up with a new move, we were just counting our resources,” Boon stated.

“That was a big part of the development of [Mortal Kombat] was to make it fit in this box, you don’t have unlimited space for your ideas, so it was ideas that could fit in this box,” Boon noted.

“Scorpion’s Teleport move was using his jump punch move, there was no extra frames of animation for it,” Boon mentioned.

“There was quite a bit of reusing of frames and images, it was just a management of that thing,” he added.

“That was a big part of [Mortal Kombat], but that was always the case with arcade games back in the day, make something really cool that will fit in a box,” Boon concluded.

One of these moves, which we previously documented, was Kano’s helicopter knife special, which couldn’t be included because it was too many frames of animation.

  • Tekken 8 to receive another patch on Tuesday to resolve movement bug with Eddy and Nina

Following the recent emergency patch for Tekken 8 the other day, the development team mentioned that they’ve discovered and have a fix for an odd movement bug that happens when Eddy and Nina face off.

“We have confirmed the following issue in Tekken 8: During matches between Eddy and Nina, Eddy may move in front of his opponent immediately after the start of the match,” the development team said on X.

The team stated that they were investigating the cause, and later on noted that a patch to address this matter would be available on Tuesday.

“Corrective actions are in progress and a patch to correct this bug (V2.00.03) is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, April 22,” the developers said.

Tekken 8’s director, Kohei ‘Nakatsu’ Ikeda, said that he was sorry that the most recently released Season 2 did not meet people’s expectations, noting that they take feedback and comments about the game very seriously.

He added that they will continue to make steady and meaningful improvements to do their utmost to regain their fan’s trust.

It’s clear that the team at Bandai Namco is very serious about updating the game in this window of time, and it’ll be interesting to see if any additional improvements are added to the game, beyond what’s documented above, on Tuesday when the latest patch is released.

  • Daigo Umehara explains why he isn’t switching from Akuma despite Ryu’s recent successes in Street Fighter 6… for now

BST|Daigo Umehara recently made the bold declaration that he is planning to quit streaming at some point this year. Doing so will allow him to focus solely on his competitive career that’s currently centered around Street Fighter 6.

Leading up to this, we saw events in which 2G|Blaz and Mouz|EndingWalker were able to come in second place at Capcom Cup 11 and Red Bull Kumite 2025 respectively. The interesting thing about these achievements is that both players were able to place at major tournaments using Ryu, a character that was previously being regarded as one of the weaker combatants in Street Fighter 6.

A new perception of Ryu is beginning to manifest within the competitive Street Fighter 6 community. Could this be a good time for a player like Daigo to finally switch to Ryu?

“When people ask me why I don’t Ryu, I always say he has bad match ups, like JP, Dhalsim, and Guile. But surprisingly enough, Ryu players are beating these characters now. This means he’s a strong character now.” — Daigo Umehara

Recently, Daigo revealed that he still intends to stick with Akuma for the time being. Though Daigo does acknowledge that there are some merits to switching to Ryu over Akuma, he believes that it would be more prudent for him to stick with the more complex character rather than switching to a simple one.

“I think Ryu is a pretty strong character now,” stated Daigo. “When people ask me why I don’t Ryu, I always say he has bad match ups, like JP, Dhalsim, and Guile.”

“But surprisingly enough, Ryu players are beating these characters now,” continued Daigo. “This means he’s a strong character now. But I really think I can go back to Ryu at anytime.”

Of course, Ryu has always been designed to be a simple character to pick up, even if he is a little difficult to master. Meanwhile, Akuma is the type of character that requires quite the commitment for those that wish to master his complexities. Due to his low health, there’s always little room for error when playing as Akuma.

“You might think I’m underestimating Ryu for saying this, but I don’t think Ryu is doing anything extremely complicated. That’s why I think I can go back to Ryu at anytime.” — Daigo Umehara

“You might think I’m underestimating Ryu for saying this, but I don’t think Ryu is doing anything extremely complicated,” said Daigo. “That’s why I think I can go back to Ryu at anytime. The same goes for Ken.”

“But when it comes to Akuma, let’s say I stopped playing Akuma, and I switch to Ryu or Ken,” continued Daigo. “Then Akuma gets buffed, let’s say. It’s impossible to come back to Akuma. The difficulty is completely different.”

It’s interesting that Daigo thinks that Akuma could receive some buffs in the future. Meanwhile, Daigo is of the opinion that Ryu won’t be receiving any share of buffs anytime soon due to his recent successes.

Of course, Daigo is also open to the possibility of Akuma getting nerfed. Daigo says that he’s open to switching to another character if that scenario plays out.

  • SNK reveals the modes in which Cristiano Ronaldo will be unavailable in with the launch of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly one of the stranger combatants to be added as a guest character in a fighting game like Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. After all, Cristiano Ronaldo is a real life football star duking it out with fictional characters in the Fatal Fury world.

Though the character will be available at launch, it seems that he won’t initially be usable in every mode within Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves when it releases on April 24, 2025 (April 21, 2025 at midnight for early access).

According to SNK, Cristiano Ronaldo will not be available in Arcade Mode, Episodes of South Town, and Color Edit at launch. However, Ronaldo will eventually be included in Arcade Mode and Episodes of South Town in a future update.

This suggests that Ronaldo will never become a subject for the Color Edit feature. This is likely a consequence of dealing with implementing a real life person into the roster of a video game.

Of course, it’s curious to note that there have been no announcements like this for Salvatore Ganacci, another real life guest character appearing in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

There’s always the possibility that Ronaldo could be added to the Color Edit feature in the future, but we’ll have to wait for that announcement to know for sure.

  • 6 players in Marvel vs. Capcom on-screen at once may sound crazy, but there’s precedent for this mode being included in the future

The Marvel vs. Capcom franchise is well known for its wild and crazy gameplay, but some people were surprised to hear that the developers once considered letting 6 players compete at once in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but decided against it because of networking concerns.

The thing is, there’s actually some precedent for Capcom including such a mode that has everyone on-screen at one time, as they’ve done so previously in some of their major fighting games, and netcode has vastly improved since the February 2011 release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

In terms of Capcom fighting games, the first place many people saw this feature was in 1995 with Street Fighter Alpha, where two players controlling Ryu and Ken could take on M. Bison, which was a call back to the animated movie that had come out the prior year.

This feature would once again return in Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold, and Street Fighter Alpha 3, but in all of these instances, this mode involved a CPU controlled opponent battling against two human players.

However, in 2012, Street Fighter X Tekken had a Scramble Mode included in the game, which let 4 people play at one time. Fast forward more than a decade later, and you’d assume that with technology and netcode advances, Capcom’s ability to do a 6 fighter on-screen battle at once would be possible — but potentially need some additional system mechanics to make it all work.

There are concerns, especially with the over the top gameplay in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, that such a mode may make it extremely difficult to keep up with the action, and the gameplay screen might need to be zoomed out, and how the camera follows the characters may also need to change a bit.

Also, it might be possible to lock down the opposition with a flurry of offensive moves, so it’s possible a new defensive mechanic that allows players to evade pressure may also be in order, outside of pushblocking.

It’s also possible this mode would only allow two people to control the on-screen action at one time, so the other players would have to wait their turns or be tagged in. This would be less of a Scramble/Dramatic Battle at that point, and would play much more like a traditional Marvel vs. Capcom title, but with some added flair.

The bottom line is that the Marvel vs. Capcom franchise is well known for its unorthodox and crazy gameplay, so a feature like this making its debut in the next Marvel game could be a reality.

After all, it’s not uncommon for Capcom to revisit previously cut features or characters and add them into the next game.

While a new Marvel vs. Capcom game hasn’t been announced yet, the recent sales boost may mean it’s only a matter of time before we hear about the next entry in this outstanding series.
