  • Legends Tokido and Bonchan face off in Ultra Street Fighter 4 Red Bull Kumite 2015 runback

Once upon a time, Rohto|Tokido and RB|Bonchan faced off in the grand finals of Red Bull Kumite 2015, and now they’re running it back.

That’s right the legends just ran through a special exhibition set in Ultra Street Fighter 4 a decade later in advance of this year’s Red Bull Kumite in Paris, France.

We actually get to see Tokido’s signature Akuma versus Bonchan’s famous Sagat for the first time in years, and it’s a real nostalgia rush to see.

While this is a nice blast from the past, it is pretty clear the pros have been putting all their time in Street Fighter 6 for the main Kumite event and not so much in Street Fighter 4.

The players certainly aren’t at their peak from 10+ years ago, but Tokido and Bonchan still do have some combos and setups built into their muscle memory.

We get to see some FADC into Ultra 1 like the good old days from Bonchan as Tokido remembers some of his safe jumps and air fireball Oki.

Tokido gets off to an early lead in their first to 3 set, but it ends up being extremely close down to the very end.

So start your day with a little trip down memory lane.

The action between the two starts at around the 2-hour and 42-minute mark that you can check out below.

  • DJ Salvatore Ganacci’s full expansive movelist revealed for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

It turns out Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t the only unexpected guest character for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves that SNK had up their sleeves from the real world.

The developer recently announced DJ Salvatore Ganacci is coming to the streets of South Town in Fatal Fury too, and we can now see his full movelist for the game.

While it was thought at first that Ronaldo would be a stance character in CotW, Ganacci seems like he may be filling that role instead.

The world-renowned DJ has four different attacks that offer up multiple follow-up options to keep the opponents on their toes.

Magical step is a command move performed with forward or back plus both punches where he can then kick the enemy, get in their face with the beat or come at them from below in To the Sky! that looks as though it may be a low.

Amazing Run is a special with three different follow-ups including a stop, sliding kick and headbutt / shoulder tackle.

Sky’s Beat is a launcher that allows him to then swim in the air, crash down on the opponent or simply float back down quickly.

And then finally, there’s Groove where Ganacci does a handstand that he can follow-up with kicks, a flipping slam, or even harder kicks.

We already saw most of what his Gear Supers are going to have to offer in the game where he dances on the opponent some more and hilariously beats them to the beat.

You can check out the full movelist for Salvatore Ganacci below.

  • Multiple SNK, Capcom, and other fighting games listed among those with start up or compatibility issues on the Nintendo Switch 2

    These problems are being ‘investigated’

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be here in just a few months, and it’ll be mostly backwards compatible with the original system’s games.

The keyword here is mostly because there’s multiple dozens of games that won’t run or have issues on the Switch 2 — including a number of fighting games.

Nintendo recently shared two reports with lists of titles that have start up issues and those that have compatibility issues on the new hardware.

Big titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mortal Kombat 1, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Samurai Shodown, and Guilty Gear Strive have all managed to avoid the list, but there’s still a handful of other fighters that may need updated from SNK and Capcom.

For SNK, four of their ACA NeoGeo classic titles won’t start on the Switch 2 with Art of Fighting 2, Samurai Shodown 2, The King of Fighters ’95, and The King of Fighters ’96.

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] is also on the list of games that have start up issues too.

The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection will apparently start, but has some in game issues.

As to what these problems are, we don’t know, as all they say for each of them is “this issue is being investigated.”

In the grand scheme of things, that’s pretty good that this is all there’s problems with, however, it’ll still be a bit annoying for those who own the titles if they are not fixed to run properly.

We also have Street Fighter 6 to look forward to on the Switch 2 when it launches on June 5, 2025.

  • Ed Boon may be teasing new Mortal Kombat 1 content with some original Mortal Kombat 3 actors but he could just be joking

Mortal Kombat 1 has now run through all of its announced characters after the recent release of the T-1000, but that doesn’t mean the game is done getting new stuff.

We already knew about the Mortal Kombat 2 movie skins pack coming to MK1 Khaos Reigns, and there may be even more interesting additions on the horizon.

Series co-creator Ed Boon recently shared a potentially exciting photo of some original Mortal Kombat 3 actors inside the motion capture studio at NetherRealm Studios.

Those are Kerri Ann Hoskins and Sal DiVita, who portrayed Sonya Blade and Nightwolf respectively.

He flat out states they’ll be MK3 skins inside Mortal Kombat 1, however, there may be some snags there.

Boon posted this on April 1, so it’s not clear if this was meant to be serious or just some sort of April Fool’s joke.

Moreover, Nightwolf isn’t even in Mortal Kombat 1 at all, meaning there would have to be more characters on the way for the game that haven’t been revealed yet (and it’d be kinda weird for Boon to just blurt it out to everyone like that).

But either way, the actors were present in the studio, and it’d also be a bit weird for them to just hang out and not do anything for the game.

Previously, it was rumored that Kombat Pack 3 for Mortal Kombat 1 had been canceled and the T-1000 was going to be the final new character for the game.

That was sorta contradicted with the release of Madam Bo as a new Kameo fighter, but we still don’t know what the future holds for MK1.

Ed Boon has hinted at future DLC earlier this year, so perhaps the game’s premature demise was a bit exaggerated.

And if Hoskins and DiVita are just now doing motion capture, it could still be quite some time before we see them in the game.

That’s if this wasn’t just all a joke too.

So what do you think? Was Boon being serious about new MK1 content, or was this his April Fool’s post for this year?

  • From fake ports to removed characters, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has a long history of rumors and myths

Marvel vs. Capcom is one of the most storied (and kinda infamous) series in the fighting game community with over three decades of history to explore.

So it should come as little surprise that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has its own legacy of myths and legends.

Khanage recently released a cool new video digging into more than a decade of MvC3 rumors, supposed leaks, and myths.

Some of them aren’t even all that old with the first rumor he looks at being the supposed Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 port to the Nintendo Switch from 2018.

The alleged footage looked real enough at first glance, but Khanage details how it was proven to just be a fake.

But then going back further in time, there was the rumors circulating around a potential Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Uncanny Edition with new characters and changes, which obviously never came to fruition.

Much of the time is dedicated to the supposed and real leaks surrounding the game’s vanilla release including seemingly random people online sharing details that would be surprisingly accurate like Akuma and Taskmaster not only being in the game but also as unlockable characters.

Khanage goes over the infamous official website leaks that suggested characters like Elektra were planned for the roster and why Frank West was initially cut from vanilla.

And the most recent discoveries of Doctor Octopus and other cut content from the beta build of MvC3 uncovered in 2023 are featured too.

Outside of MvC3, we’ve also been covering the re-discovery of a secret Marvel vs. Capcom website from the ’90s that held plenty of development secrets and interesting stories that’s provided a wealth of new information.

You should give Khanage’s new video a watch below.

  • Salvatore Ganacci announced for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves

Update: This story has been updated with a gameplay trailer for Salvatore Ganacci.

If you thought last week was crazy when we saw the announcement of Cristiano Ronaldo joining Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, well, this week isn’t going to be any more regular.

Today, SNK have announced that another real-life person will be joining the fighting game roster. and this time it’s world-renowned DJ and record producer Salvatore Ganacci.

The trailer is not actually much of a trailer, but more of a direct advertisement for Salvatore’s Ganacci’s inclusion featuring real-life actors with a very brief showcase of gameplay towards the end of the video.

It was similar during last week’s reveal for Cristiano Ronaldo with a full gameplay trailer debuting not long after, so we’ll likely see something similar here.

This is undoubtedly our old friend Duck King was talking about yesterday, though it does feel strange that Fatal Fury’s own resident DJ isn’t there to duke it out with Salvatore Ganacci in the game.

You can see a gallery of the brief gameplay introduction we see in the announcement trailer below.

  • Should the Street Fighter series bring in more Rival Schools characters after Akira? Here are a few that might be cool to see

It’s been established by Capcom for a very, very long time that Rival Schools and Street Fighter take place in the same universe. In fact, it was established in the very first game in the Rival Schools franchise way back in 1997 when Street Fighter’s Sakura Kasugano appeared in that title as a hidden character.

Now, you could always make the argument that maybe she was just a bonus character for fun, but she actually interacted with the characters storyline-wise and was established to be long-time friends with Rival Schools alumni Hinata Wakaba and Natsu Ayuhara. Despite this, it took a long time for Rival Schools to actually have any kind of impact on Street Fighter.

It wasn’t until Street Fighter 5 that we’d see the favor be reciprocated, originally just with Rival Schools characters appearing in the background of the Kanzuki Beach, where Hinata Wakaba and Tiffany Lords are featured in the background playing on the beach.

Given that Sakura is friends with the Rival Schools girls, it wasn’t too much of a stretch to think that Karin had also befriended them, so it was a nice little nod.

Of course, a few years later we would see a much more substantial crossover between Rival Schools and Street Fighter and indeed the first actual Rival Schools content for over 20 years.

This was when Akira Kazama was revealed for Street Fighter 5’s final season. The reveal of her inclusion was in August of 2020 and she’d eventually join the roster a year later in August of 2021.

Along with Akira, many other Rival Schools easter eggs followed. The biggest one, of course, was the inclusion of her older brother Daigo Kazama as her V-Trigger ability, where he’d come in to protect his little sister.

She also launched with a stage Rival Riverside which, similarly to the classic Street Fighter 4 stage Overpass, had you battling under a bridge close to the riverbed in Japan.

Rival Riverside also featured cameos from Akira’s teammates, who were Daigo’s closest friends in the Rival Schools game, Gan and Edge. So with Akira’s inclusion, we saw a big move towards Rival Schools being legitimatized as a part of Street Fighter’s universe.

Last week, I already talked about Akira’s own chances in a story about returning Street Fighter 5 characters and given her extremely warm reception, I think she’s very likely to join Street Fighter 6’s roster eventually.

To make it even more topical, we just recently got a Rival Schools Battle Pass announced for Street Fighter 6. But what about other cast members from Rival Schools? Well, let’s have a look at some of them I think would be nice additions.

The easiest choice by far is Hinata Wakaba since she already has a pre-established connection, being the childhood friend of Sakura and all. Though… well, you’d probably need to have Sakura in first before adding her, but still.

Hinata is actually pretty similar to Sakura herself, though not entirely identical. She does similar moves to Sakura’s Shououken and Shunpukyaku, but she only has funny moves such as kicking her shoe off of her foot.

The funny part of this is that she doesn’t pick her shoe up but can still do the move, so she essentially has infinite shoes at her disposal… pretty nifty.

While she may not be the most exciting pick available, she is a Rival Schools staple and already is connected to Street Fighter so she just kind of makes sense.

Generally viewed as the main protagonist of the franchise, Batsu Ichimonji is a character who may initially come off as a bad guy due to his rudeness and rough vocabulary, but he’s actually a very motivated guy with a strong sense of justice — fitting for a protagonist.

Basically the archetypal Japanese shonen manga protagonist, which is a perfect fit for a school-based setting in a fighting game, Batsu fights for what he believes in and then fights some more.

As you’d expect from a fighting game main character, he’s essentially an all-rounder character who’s decent at everything but doesn’t necessarily excel at anything in particular.

He has a standard projectile, actually comes equipped with a dive kick — though it’s extremely unsafe on block, contrary to what you’d normally see in Street Fighter — so it’s normally used as a combo ender if anything, since Rival Schools has a very high emphasis on launching opponents into air combos, which Akira also brought with her to Street Fighter 5.

Much like Hinata, he may not be the most exciting choice but he is a character who sticks out as recognizable simply because he’s one of the faces of the franchise.

He also already got adapted to 2D mechanics, though not quite Street Fighter itself, when he appeared in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars, so there’s some inspiration to be taken from there if he were to be included.

Okay, I’ll admit it — there might be some slight bias here. From the time I spent with Rival Schools, Tiffany Lords is easily my personal favorite character (unlikely to be surprising to anyone who’s followed my fighting game mains since the vast majority of them are blonde).

Unlike most characters in Rival Schools who are Japanese (makes sense, it takes place in a Japanese school after all), Tiffany is actually American and is a transfer student… kind of explains the blonde hair, huh.

Similarly to most characters from the franchise, though, she embodies a sport or extracurricular activity in her moveset, in her case cheerleading. This gets mixed with a variety of kickboxing moves to make up her fighting style.

Since she’s based on cheerleading, Tiffany does a lot of spinning and flipping which would be really cool to see with modern animations and I feel like out of the Rival Schools cast, she’d probably be one of the most fun characters for developers to make and modernize the moves of.

As for her personality, she’s a peppy and fairly stereotypical teenage girl, Tiffany transfers together with Roy Bromwell (another American character) who she’s in love with and quickly embraces the fighting-centered mantra among the high schools in the game’s setting.

Tiffany has a slight in due to her already appearing in the Kanzuki Beach stage alongside Hinata Wakaba,. While I wouldn’t say that really increases her chances notably, it at least shows that she was at the forefront of Capcom’s designer’s minds when they decided to work Rival Schools more into Street Fighter itself.

She’s definitely not a character with any particular story relevance, but I find it hard to imagine that any of Rival Schools’ story beats would carry over into the Street Fighter mainline series anyway… so since she has a good design and is a fun character to play, I’d love to see Tiffany get some more mainstream screen time.

One of relatively few adult characters who appear in the franchise, Hayato Nekketsu is a hot-blooded teacher (his last name literally means hot-blooded, so it’s pretty on the nose) who is the Physical Education teacher at Taiyo Academy, the school which Hinata and Batsu are enrolled in.

Generally seen walking around with a bamboo sword, Hayato believes in corporal punishment to discipline his students which… would be a big no-no in real life, but given it’s a franchise based around everyone beating the crap out of each other on school grounds, we can probably let this one slide.

Interestingly, Hayato has some issues with any potential implementation that other characters don’t have where he was designed by an outside source, a manga author named Kazuhiko Shimamoto, which led to him not being included in certain art books for the franchise citing legal issues with the rights to the character.

Since then, however, he has appeared in art for Street Fighter 5 around the time of Akira’s inclusion, so it’s likely that any rights issues are somewhat manageable if Capcom wanted to include him.

Zaki is one of the few characters who actually did not appear in the original Rival Schools game but was introduced in the sequel.

Originally the leader of a massive girls-only delinquent gang, her parents enrolled her in Seijyun Girls’ High School to set her straight… that’s right, one of the several schools where everyone beats the crap out of each other. Good plan.

Based on a stereotypical female delinquent type design, she is a fairly antisocial person who doesn’t like other people, though she gradually warms up to others after spending time with Akira and their third teammate, Yurika, in the second game.

While she has normal up-close moves as well, she uses a chain in her moveset to fight opponents from a distance and many of her moves are chargeable but leave her open to attack during the charge, making her a tricky character who can bait her opponents into moving incorrectly and punish them for it.

Given that Street Fighter 6 is currently fairly low on zoning characters, if Capcom decided to dig more into the Rival Schools roster Zaki could be a very interesting choice from a gameplay perspective. It also doesn’t hurt if they add Akira to the game since Zaki is one of her closest friends.

If you were to adapt her to a Street Fighter scenario, she could basically be a stance character where she either wields her chain or fights up-close which would be an interesting dynamic.

I think she’s not a bad choice if implemented, but she’s also a bit more obscure than most of Rival Schools’ cast, so potentially not being as recognizable as some others might be to her detriment… though, to be honest, Rival Schools has been on ice for so long that most of them are probably around the same level of unknown in today’s day and age.

Daigo Kazama is the older brother of Akira Kazama and definitely has the biggest in for a Street Fighter inclusion since we already saw him as a major part in Street Fighter 5.

While he wasn’t playable, he was actually part of Akira’s moveset as her V-Trigger where he comes in to help his sister beat her foes.

In the Rival Schools universe, he enrolled in Gedo High School which was a chaotic school but Daigo, through his power, managed to get all the students under his command and became known as their overall leader.

Generally nothing more than a pawn in the Rival Schools game, Daigo appears as one of the strongest characters but gets brainwashed by the main villains in both games, meaning that Daigo himself doesn’t have much agency in the story.

Nevertheless, he is established as one of the most powerful students in the game’s setting and is the catalyst for Akira to fight at all since she wants to find her brother and figure out what happened to him.

Because of his status power-wise he feels like a fairly natural fit for being a character who can actually go toe-to-toe with the martial arts masters of Street Fighter, so it would be interesting to see how Capcom handled Daigo if they brought him to Street Fighter, transferring him from his “big fish in a small pond” status to a full-fledged world warrior.

Of course, there are many more characters in the Rival Schools franchise and while I tried to avoid some of the more goofy ones or too sport-oriented ones (such as Nagare Namikawa, a swimmer who… swims mid-air to make his moveset work), Rival Schools truly does shine due to its bizarre cast members.

I feel like any of these characters would be apt inclusions to join the Street Fighter universe, but what about you? Any characters from Rival Schools that you’d rather see? Let us know in the comments.

  • Gill and The Illuminati are still active in Street Fighter 6, according to director

Also a quick update on the people looking for Q

Gill, the leader of the Secret Society, better known as The Illuminati, are still active in Street Fighter 6, according to the game’s director, Takayuki Nakayama.

The Illuminati and Gill were first introduced in the 1997 release of Street Fighter 3: New Generation, and the main bad guys earned a spot in many gamers’ hearts and minds since that time.

Nakayama was asked if Gill and The Illuminati are still present and active in Street Fighter 6. “There’s a bit about them in the Rashid story (It’s an old story),” he wrote on X.

During Street Fighter 6’s World Tour, Rashid mentions his ancestors founded a kingdom, but it was a long time ago, before any of the people currently around were alive — at least, so he thinks.

Rashid notes that his ancestor’s kingdom got destroyed, as they were ambushed and driven off the land. The legend states the invaders had fair skin and golden hair, and flew banners split evenly in red and blue.

At that point, an image pops up which shows Gill riding on horseback with his horse having red and blue coverings around him, followed by an army with red and blue flags, which is obviously a reference to The Illuminati, pictured above.

Nakayama also states that The Illuminati have a sign in Beat Square in Metro City, so they must be active. The billboard is in blue and red text and talks about paradise and a balance between powers.

So while we do not know the specifics of what Gill and The Illuminati are up to at this time, it’s very clear they’re still at work, even if Necro and Effie managed to escape from their clutches.

Going further, Street Fighter 6’s director was asked about Lily and her ability to tap into the Satsui No Hado and what the future may hold for her and her tribe.

“If they go for strength, they will eventually meet Gill and the Illuminati. However, that is not now. That’s a little different from their beliefs,” Nakayama said.

It’s very clear there are numerous ties to multiple major characters in Street Fighter 6 that lead directly back to Gill and The Illuminati, so it should only be a matter of time before we hear from him and his organization again.

Lastly, Nakayama touched on the three people seen in Q’s ending for Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, as they had CFN profiles created for them a ways back. These three are trying to track down Q in the stills shown after you beat the game’s arcade mode with him.

“They are still searching for the mystery of ‘Q’. They are being watched closely by upper management for the use of their huge budget,” wrote Nakayama.

  • Bandai Namco responds to Tekken 8 Season 2 community feedback, promises emergency patch in April for Paul and JACK-8 specifically

Just a few days ago, Tekken 8 released its major Season 2 balance patch which also included the release of Anna Williams, the second season’s first additional character.

It didn’t take long for players to voice their dissatisfaction with the changes leading to overwhelmingly negative reviews on Tekken 8’s steam page and this morning, the Tekken team have released a statement on their official X account.

While there were many points of contention regarding Tekken 8’s second season, one of the biggest issues came specifically from changes to Paul and JACK-8 and these issues seem to have been unintended.

This is the first point brought up in the X post, specifying that Paul’s Hammer of the Gods was not intended to lead to a guaranteed follow-up on block and that JACK-8’s Jab Elbow > Make Some Noise having its third hit be uninterruptible will also be adressed.

The patch addressing these emergency issues is stated to be released at some point in mid-to-late April, so within the month but likely not within the next two weeks.

These are labeled “high priority issues” by the team and will thus be addressed as promptly as possible.

Further, they state that they will “continue to carefully review and respond to feedback from the community” and will provide detailed information on any changes as soon as they are confirmed.

Although getting these unintended issues solved quickly is definitely a good thing, the overall reception to Tekken 8’s balance direction as a whole has not been particularly well-received, with many players feeling that the team have doubled down on many of the aggressive aspects fans already were not fond of in the game’s first season.

It remains to be seen what the team’s direction for Season 2 will be after this wave of feedback and whether this backlash truly does represent the community at large.

Given that many of the game’s pro players such as five-time Evo champion TM|Arslan Ash have been quick to express their unfavorable opinions about the patch, there are definitely a lot of eyes on Bandai Namco and their Tekken 8 development team at the moment.

How do you feel about Tekken 8’s Season 2 patch a few days in, notwithstanding these unintended problems relating to Paul and JACK-8? Let us know in the comments.
