  • UNICAL To Sack Professor, Senior Lecturer Due To Plagiarism

    The Vice-Chancellor of University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu has disclosed that the University of Calabar is to offer automatic employment to the 12 first class graduates who did their convocation last Saturday so as to encourage hard work and inspire other students.

    The VC also informed that two lecturers of the University have been recommended for immediate sack for plagiarism.

    Akpagu was speaking at a pre-Convocation news conference where he said the dismissal was in line with the school’s zero tolerance for indiscipline, forgery and examination malpractice.

    According to Akpagu, his administration will not tolerate any form of indiscipline from both the academic staff, non-academic staff and students of the institution.

    “We want to make a difference so, we are not ready to tolerate indiscipline, be it forgery, plagiarism, exam malpractice, stealing, rape and other vices.

    “This week the Disciplinary Committee of our Governing Council concluded cases of two lecturers, accused of plagiarism. They were given a fair hearing and found guilty of plagiarism and one of them is a professor and the other a senior lecturer and the council approved that they be retired immediately.”

  • UNICAL Graduates 12 First Class At The 29th Convocational Ceremony

    The University of Calabar, Calabar has held its 29th convocation ceremony for graduating students of the various faculties of the institutions.

    The convocation ceremony which held at the Abram Ordia Stadium within the institution was host to dignitaries; from the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu, former Governor of Cross River state Mr. Donald Duke who was awarded with a Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law, Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa also a recipient of a honorary Doctorate degree in Political science, the Speaker of both the Cross River state House of Assembly and the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. John Gaul and Hon. Aloysius Luke, traditional rulers, parents and staffs of the institution.

    Declaring the occasion open, the Pro-chancellor of the institution, Dr. Emmanuel Iwuyanwu said the management of the institution is doing all within its powers to raise the standard of research and teaching in the institution.

    He added that the management fully backs President Muhammad Buhari in his fight against corruption which he states has been militating against the growth of the nation.

    “We in the University of Calabar are strongly behind the President in his fight against corruption. It was based on our zero-tolerance for corruption that we were the first school in Nigeria to offer a compulsory credit units course on anti-corruption with syllables developed by the ICPC.”

    Also speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu said that he hopes to lift the institution which is currently ranked 9th in Nigeria to become one of the best in Africa.

    “As a former student of this school, all my actions will be based on the fact that I have a responsibility to which I cannot afford to disappoint”.

    He further stated that the graduates have been certified worthy in character and learning and are now deemed ready to contribute their quota to the world knowing that they are ambassadors of the school.

    The institution graduated 7,222 students with 4,868 graduating with first degrees, 1,402 with Diplomas and 952 with higher degrees.

  • NUC – Medical Students To Spend 11 Years In The University

    The National Universities Commission has declared that any student who wants to study medicine will henceforth spend a minimum of 10 years in the university.

    The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie made the declaration in a lecture delivered at the maiden matriculation and inauguration of the University of Medical Science, Ondo, Ondo State.

    In a lecture titled : Development of Medical Education : Prospects and Challenges‘, Okojie, who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Chiedu Mafiana, said the development was imperative in order to enable the students mature psychologically for the profession.

    He said the 2015 document for the training of medical students made provision for students to spend the first four years in studying basic sciences in university after which they would proceed to the medical school to spend another seven years.

    Stressing the need for adequate funding of medical training and practice, the NUC Executive Secretary admonished the management of the institution to ensure that the money earmarked for the development of the institution was used for the purpose it was meant.

    The Visitor of the school and Ondo a State governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, in his speech said the university was expected to leverage on the benefits of the medical complex around the institution to advance efforts in medical research and training.

    He expressed optimism that the institution would be a leading internationally-recognised platform for raising crops of professionally-competent individuals in the various disciplines of the health care industry.

    “It is our hope and belief that it will provide sound scientific, technological and professional training to address identified health needs and problems, solve them within the context of community and national needs and sustainable development,” Mimiko said.

    In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Friday Okonofua, said the that the university would achieve the objectives for which it was established, appealing to all well-meaning Nigerians to render assistance to the varsity by contributing to the ‘Friends of UNIMED Funds’ initiatives which was targeted at raising N1billion for the school .

    He lauded the initiative of the Ondo State government for the establishment of the university describing it as the most creative and innovative idea that has taken place in the development of tertiary education in the country.

    Professor Esu made the remarks in Calabar at a  Photography exhibition/book and  documentary presentations on  Cross River State in honour of the Governor Professor Ben Ayade and his Deputy, Professor Ivara Esu by Miss Charity Ubia, a Corps Member serving in the Press Unit of the  Deputy Governor’s Office Calabar. The event held at the National Museum and  Monuments, Calabar.

    He said her commitment and sincerity in the performance of her duty has given the hope that the future of the country is bright. Professor Esu who described the presentation of her works as “ Amazing”, also called on other corp members serving in other parts of the state and beyond to emulate Miss Ubia in their various fields of endeavours.
