  • UNICAL VC warns students against antisocial activities in the institution

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu has warned that his administration would have zero–tolerance for involvement in anti-Social activities such as examination malpractice, secret cult activities and use of dangerous weapons in the Institution.

The Vice Chancellor gave the warning while delivering his address at the 38th Matriculation ceremony of the Institution which was held at the Abraham Ordia Stadium.

Prof. Akpagu informed the Matriculants that they were the privileged few out of a total of 21,247 candidates that applied for admission, because only 8,259 students were admitted into the various disciplines of the University for2015/2016 academic session.

According to the Vice Chancellor, of the total number of8,259 candidates admitted, the breakdown shows that3,949 students were admitted into Sciences courses,4,410 for Arts Courses while 3,060 were admitted for non NUC programmes of the Centre for Educational Services (CES).

He admonished the students to ensure that they complete their registration at all levels electronically, stressing that all admitted students should take the pains of doing their registration by themselves without a third party, adding that, this was to ensure that their records are properly captured in the University´s Data Base and kept safe for future reference.

Advising all the matriculating students who have duly paid their University charges to formally sign the Matriculation Register and obtain their Matriculation Numbers automatically in the Registry, Prof. Akpagu said as the ‘first Malabite’ to become Vice Chancellor of the University, his administration´s priority is the welfare of all Malabites and Malabresses.

The University don further said that he believes students form the core of the University hence the reason he would continue to create a conductive environment as exemplified by provision of mattresses, double bunk beds, refurbishing hostels and building new ones, rehabilitating and building more classroom desks and laboratory equipment, creation of recreation facilities, street light and beautification of the institution’s ambience.

The 10th Vice Chancellor expressed the hope that these welfare efforts would infuse in the students a new enthusiasm and zeal in the pursuit of academic excellence.

Prof. Akpagu while wishing the Matriculants the best of luck and Gods guidance´s as they embark on their academic journey, congratulated all the Matriculants on assuming full membership of the University of Calabar and urged them to take active part in sports activities so as to keep healthy and alert so as to not only pass through the University but have the University pass through them.

  • UNIZIK students make mini bus from local materials (See photos)

Wow, I think this is the most lucrative thing I’d ever seen by Nigerians students. It’s been working and we’re heading they; technology will soon be in our backyards. But, will the Nigerian administration support and promote this one or will it be snubbed as others?

Seven final-year engineering students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, designed and constructed a mini bus from scratch with locally sourced materials made specially to suit Nigeria’s topography and climatic condition.

“The bus was constructed from start to finish at the University’s workshop, using all necessary design software and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools. We constructed the chassis, down to every single part of the mini bus,” said Callistus Ezeigwe, one of the seven.

The group, known as the Autozik Group, was made up of six males and a female including  Callistus Ezeigwe, Victor Obinani, Ifeanyi Ezeanolue, Ogbu Ikenna, Fidelis Ominigbo, Nnamdi Nwobodo and Chinaza Okoro, was supervised by the then Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Dr. C.H. Achebe.

“We made the mini bus using mere hand tools. This means we did all of the constructions and folding, with our hands, since the university could not provide us with ground equipment, as used in most automobile companies,” said Ezeugwu.

The mini bus which took about five months to complete, has a beautiful finishing so that people find it difficult to believe it was made in Nigeria.

  • Students arrested during sexual violence protest at Rhodes in SA

Five students were arrested this morning at Rhodes University in relation to protests against sexual violence that started on Monday.

The students had closed off the Grahamstown campus at various entry points using furniture, brooms, sticks and stones. This prompted police intervention after they received reports of an “illegal gathering” taking place.

Police spokesperson Mali Govender said warning shots were fired to disperse the crowd but students failed to adhere to instructions.

University staff also tried to help the police to unblock the road, but were met with resistance. One student, Phiwokuhle Tom, said university registrar Dr Stephen Fourie, was one of the staff members who demanded that the barricades be removed.

“Police started shooting us with rubber bullets and used pepper spray. We dispersed but more vans arrived. They man-handled students and put them in the police van,” she said.

Two females, among the five who were arrested, faced charges relating to the Regulation of Gatherings Act. Govender said they were due to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates’ Court shortly.

University Vice-Chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela was seen earlier pleading with police to release the students after their capture. One suffered a panic attack while in the back of a police van.

Protests on campus had been rife since Sunday night, when a list of alleged rapists was circulated on social media. This sparked a call for a students council representative to step down because he was on the list.

The students demonstrated topless yesterday to emphasise that a women’s naked body was not an invitation or reason to sexually assault her. They have vowed to protest and disrupt university operations until action is taken against those accused of sexual assault at the institution.
