  • Bags & Phones Snatching Increases In Calabar As Robbers Invade CRUTECH Quarters

The level of snatching of valuables by touts, gangsters, street urchins and the dreaded skolombo boys in some areas of Calabar south axis of Cross River’s capital city continues to rise with students of the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH, fast becoming easy targets.

Also, the number of break-ins while people are away have also doubled with a staff of CRUTECH suffering this fate while residents in the CRUTECH environs say properties have been disappearing.

The elements gathered now lie in wait of unsuspecting students who go out for night reading classes at the ETF and PREFAB buildings and attack when they see a window of opportunity.

This has reportedly continued for over a fortnight with the operations peaking early a few days to the matriculation ceremony when several robbers invaded the night reading classes and collected phones and other valuables or as commonly called; ‘obtained’ the students.

Also, people residing around the CRUTECH environs have been suffering the same fate especially after 10PM when the school electricity generating plant is switched off.

The residence of one Mrs Effiom at the staff quarters was invaded last week during school hours with several valuables and properties worth hundreds of thousands carted away.

Narrating her ordeal in church to her friends, Mrs Effiom, a staff of CRUTECH said:

“We all left for work and my children for school and upon our return discovered that they broke into our house and carted away our clothes, wrappers, shoes and so many things including the cash we had left at home to take care of ourselves. They left the house in a mess.”

  • Ghastly car accident as School Bus crashes with School Children in Calabar (Photos + Videos)

There was a ghastly car accident today at about 7:00am this morning at Target Street by Andy System, Calabar. The accident occurred when a school bus was rushing to drop school children in school.

A school bus of Melody International School (MIA), Parliamentary Extension, Calabar carrying more than 10 school children crashes into three vehicles along Target Street. The bus driver was complaining of break failure as he sank with more than 10 school children into 3 running vehicles.

One Mr. Ekpenyong told Calabar Reporters that he saw the driver in total fray as he bask into a crossing Toyota Camry, then fully into a Volks Wagen cab before kissing the rear of a Honda Accord packing by the road side. Although there was no death casualties recorded as few were injured while others were saved and sound. The vehicles were damaged severely especially the school bus and the taxi as the road was blocked due to the accident.

As at the time our corresponded got there, the police were already there. They helped block both sides of the road while diverting vehicles into the nearby streets. The police also helped by clearing the vehicles before the street was let open.

As of last December last year in that same street, Soldiers were caught scooping fuel as Oando truck crashed into a shop. I think the government should do something with that street especially the road side parking as the narrowness of the street can’t bear it busyness no more.

  • UNICAL VC warns students against antisocial activities in the institution

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu has warned that his administration would have zero–tolerance for involvement in anti-Social activities such as examination malpractice, secret cult activities and use of dangerous weapons in the Institution.

The Vice Chancellor gave the warning while delivering his address at the 38th Matriculation ceremony of the Institution which was held at the Abraham Ordia Stadium.

Prof. Akpagu informed the Matriculants that they were the privileged few out of a total of 21,247 candidates that applied for admission, because only 8,259 students were admitted into the various disciplines of the University for2015/2016 academic session.

According to the Vice Chancellor, of the total number of8,259 candidates admitted, the breakdown shows that3,949 students were admitted into Sciences courses,4,410 for Arts Courses while 3,060 were admitted for non NUC programmes of the Centre for Educational Services (CES).

He admonished the students to ensure that they complete their registration at all levels electronically, stressing that all admitted students should take the pains of doing their registration by themselves without a third party, adding that, this was to ensure that their records are properly captured in the University´s Data Base and kept safe for future reference.

Advising all the matriculating students who have duly paid their University charges to formally sign the Matriculation Register and obtain their Matriculation Numbers automatically in the Registry, Prof. Akpagu said as the ‘first Malabite’ to become Vice Chancellor of the University, his administration´s priority is the welfare of all Malabites and Malabresses.

The University don further said that he believes students form the core of the University hence the reason he would continue to create a conductive environment as exemplified by provision of mattresses, double bunk beds, refurbishing hostels and building new ones, rehabilitating and building more classroom desks and laboratory equipment, creation of recreation facilities, street light and beautification of the institution’s ambience.

The 10th Vice Chancellor expressed the hope that these welfare efforts would infuse in the students a new enthusiasm and zeal in the pursuit of academic excellence.

Prof. Akpagu while wishing the Matriculants the best of luck and Gods guidance´s as they embark on their academic journey, congratulated all the Matriculants on assuming full membership of the University of Calabar and urged them to take active part in sports activities so as to keep healthy and alert so as to not only pass through the University but have the University pass through them.
