  • AAUA Students Protests Over Management’s Obnoxious ‘Reparation Fee’

Aggrieved students from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State condemned the institution’s management for instructing students to pay a total sum of N25,000 as a “reparation fee” before the school would be reopened and allowed to continue academic activities.

Newsmen reported that AAUA management had announced on Wednesday night that all students of the institution should proceed to the institution’s accredited banks and pay for the “reparation fee” of N25,000.

A release issued from the office of the institution’s registrar read that the students should print out their reparation acknowledgement slips as proof of payment, stressing that the deadline for the payment would be next week.
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko during the clash.

“Students are expected to print their reparation acknowledgement slips upon the successful payment. Note that this slip, along with the sworn affidavit, will be needed for clearance at the student’s faculty.

“Students are to note that payment for reparation fees commences immediately while student’s clearance begins on Monday, the 16th of May, 2016,” it read.

The students described the fee as obnoxious and as a heavy tax on their parents who are still battling with unpaid salaries and wages.

One of the students, Abiola Afolabi, who spoke with a SaharaReporters correspondent, criticized the management of the institution, noting that the levy slammed on them is unfavorable, anti-student, and could cause a crisis to break out at the school.

“This is an act of selfishness by levying the sum of N25,000 on us as a reparation fee. Again, it is nothing but heartlessness and extortion. How much is our tuition fee? [Vice Chancellor] Professor Ajibefun and his gang of management in AAUA better wake up and stop this unfavorable decision that could give his tenure a bad name.

“I can’t just imagine why the Vice Chancellor would allow the governor and his cohorts to use him against the students of AAUA. I think this present administration hates us. We shall continue to fight for our rights no matter their plans against us are,” the student said.

She added that the student populace would continue to reject all forms of injustice and actions of the management, especially as the institution prepares for examinations.
It would be recalled that AAUA students staged a violent protest last month over the killing of their colleague identified as Afolabi Daniel Ojo, a second-year economics student who was crushed to death by a hit-and-run commercial motorcyclist in the sleepy town.

The protest led to a heavy clash between the angered students and the indigenes of the town, who were accused of harboring wanted criminals perpetrating evil against non-indigenous students of the institution, while the management also accused the students of damaging property during the unrest.

  • Video: UNICAL DVC Urge Students To Protest Victimization, Says Buying Textbooks Not Compulsory

The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi has called on students of the institution to go as far as protesting openly to expose lecturers who victimize them assuring that the University will support them.

She made her position known recently in an exclusive interview with CrossRiverWatch where she said for every genuine claim of victimization and other illegitimate treatments, the University management will back up the students.

“They can go out and do aluta on the streets over frivolous reasons, the one that affects their academics they are afraid to speak out.… but these are lecturers keeping them down and they cannot go on the streets to say this lecturer is holding me back, that is where we ask students to go out and demonstrate and expose the lecturer and the administration will back up such student. It will be very difficult for a lecturer to fail a good student.” She asserted.

Furthermore, Prof. Florence went on to reveal that the school management has not authorized any lecturer to make text books mandatory.

“A student cannot do without a text book, if you are a serious student you must buy text books, even in the secondary school, our children in the primary school, we buy books for them, what we are against is making them mandatory. The situation where they make students register compulsorily by buying text books is what we are against.”

She went on to say that though they as management have been making efforts to curb issues of compulsory text book purchase, the students are not making efforts in opening up because of fear of victimization.

She encouraged them to brace up in reporting such cases and any other form of illegitimate treatment from lecturers assuring that they will investigate all accusations with or without the students’ identity but cautioned that reported cases must be genuine.

The DVC Academics ended by saying that the institution’s current administration led by Prof. Zana Akpagu is poised to move the University forward in all areas.

  • Bags & Phones Snatching Increases In Calabar As Robbers Invade CRUTECH Quarters

The level of snatching of valuables by touts, gangsters, street urchins and the dreaded skolombo boys in some areas of Calabar south axis of Cross River’s capital city continues to rise with students of the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH, fast becoming easy targets.

Also, the number of break-ins while people are away have also doubled with a staff of CRUTECH suffering this fate while residents in the CRUTECH environs say properties have been disappearing.

The elements gathered now lie in wait of unsuspecting students who go out for night reading classes at the ETF and PREFAB buildings and attack when they see a window of opportunity.

This has reportedly continued for over a fortnight with the operations peaking early a few days to the matriculation ceremony when several robbers invaded the night reading classes and collected phones and other valuables or as commonly called; ‘obtained’ the students.

Also, people residing around the CRUTECH environs have been suffering the same fate especially after 10PM when the school electricity generating plant is switched off.

The residence of one Mrs Effiom at the staff quarters was invaded last week during school hours with several valuables and properties worth hundreds of thousands carted away.

Narrating her ordeal in church to her friends, Mrs Effiom, a staff of CRUTECH said:

“We all left for work and my children for school and upon our return discovered that they broke into our house and carted away our clothes, wrappers, shoes and so many things including the cash we had left at home to take care of ourselves. They left the house in a mess.”
