One-year Anniversary: Wikimedia enrolls over 50 Okopoly lecturers, students on free open knowledge

    By Ovat Abeng

Wikipedia, one of the world’s largest free online encyclopedia, has enrolled over fifty lecturers and students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State, into it free open internet knowledge.

Mr. Timothy Ezenwanne, the Communication and Project Officer, Wikimedia Anambra State Network, announced this during the one-year anniversary celebration of the Wikimedia Anambra Network, held at the Ekwueme Centre for Multi-Disciplinary Research, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Wednesday.

He said the enrollment, opening of free Wikipedia page for Chukwumemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Greg Chukwudi Nwakoby and other executed projects in Anambra State by the organization were part of the achievement recorded so far within one year.

Mr. Ezenwanne while calling for more people to enrolled in the Wikimedia free internet services in the state also revealed that about eighty percent of Nigerian States, Communities, leaders, Institutions of learning, Traditional institutes and their Monarchs, and some other organizations in the country can not be found in it website.

According to him, Wikimedia, been one the online company working with most of the online searching engines in the World, has evolved from a seemingly impossible idea into a sprawling testament to humanity, a place where we can collaborate, share, and learn about anything and everything.

“It is a global effort of volunteers who elevate knowledge and cooperation over conflict and self-interest. We are committed to preserving the integrity and value of information at a time when the world needs it most.

“Today, Wikipedia’s more than 55 million articles can be accessed in over 300 languages, for free, and without advertisements, all created by volunteers,” he added.

Declaring the ceremony open, Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, MD/CEO of the Anambra State ICT Agency, called for a shift towards positive narratives about Anambra State.

Agbata emphasized that Anambra, under the administration of the Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, is flourishing and deserves to be portrayed in a more positive light. He urged citizens to take up the challenge of crafting positive narratives, particularly through digital platforms like Wikipedia.

He extended congratulations to Wikimedia Anambra Network for its one-year milestone, underscoring its pivotal role in Governor Soludo’s vision of transforming Anambra into a thriving and prosperous smart mega city.

Agbata stressed the importance of supporting the Network and highlighted the governor’s endorsement of initiatives that promote Anambra’s unique story.

“When I first encountered the Wikimedia group in Lagos, I was impressed by their work. If you don’t share your story, no one else will. No one understands your culture and experiences better than you, which makes it imperative for networks like this to proliferate across the nation,” Agbata stated.

He further noted that editors outside Anambra may not fully grasp the rich culture and captivating stories of Anambra communities, emphasizing the need for local residents to rise up to the challenge of telling their own narratives authentically leveraging the Wikimedia platforms.

Dr. Ngozi Osuchukwu, President of Wikimedia User Group, Anambra Network, on her welcome speech, explained that Wikimedia focuses on digital literacy, skills, and digital information management, empowering individuals to contribute to open knowledge in a progressive manner.

“Over the past year, the Anambra Network has executed over 22 projects in Anambra State and beyond, with six of them being community-based initiatives covering health, governance, politics, community information, and open knowledge

“Recently, the Network formed a partnership with the Anambra State ICT Agency in recognition of its pivotal role as the Agency mandated to drive the “Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere” vision of Governor Soludo.

“We are celebrating our successes today, and it’s worth mentioning that the Anambra Network won the award for the highest participation in July’s ‘Naija Office Hour.

“Our members have also been selected to attend Wikimedia international conferences, with one member sponsored to Singapore last month for a Wikimedia activity. In the upcoming month, another member will travel to Morocco for a Wiki activity, and yet another will visit India,” she said.

Dr. Osuchukwu urged people to embrace digital literacy and volunteer in Wikimedia spaces to share their stories.

She commended the brands and organizations that partnered with and sponsored the Network over the past year, particularly acknowledging the Anambra State ICT Agency’s support and expressing hope for continued collaboration to promote digital literacy in the state.

The celebration included the cutting of an anniversary cake, cultural performances, and poetic renditions in both English and Igbo languages, as highlights of the event.

  • New horizons of the 1950s explored in book

New horizons of the 1950s explored in book

The possibilities of the 1950s are explored in a new book written by an academic from the University of Chester.

Dr Stephen F. Kelly, Visiting Professor in Journalism at the University, is the author of the recently published Recollections of the 1950s: Home, Family and New Horizons (The History Press) which is available to buy
    here.

    Dr Stephen F. Kelly

The 1950s saw a major shift in the lifestyles of many people living in Britain. Levels of employment rose to new heights and the shops featured white consumer goods for the first time. Homes welcomed their first televisions and rock ‘n’ roll was born.

Other significant developments during the post-war decade included the National Health Service providing free healthcare to the nation, families enjoying going on holidays and Queen Elizabeth II being crowned.

The book includes interviews with former Labour leader Lord Neil Kinnock and footballers Bobby Charlton, Wilf McGuiness and Terry Venables. The book includes chapters on schooldays, TV and radio, trips to the seaside and the music and fashion from this exciting decade of change as the world emerged from the shadow of the Second World War.

Lord Kinnock also provides a foreword for the book.

Stephen, from Birkenhead, is the author of more than 20 books written mainly about sport and sporting personalities. He has an extensive career in both television and newspapers.

He said: “I grew up in Birkenhead in the 1950s. It was a defining era, the beginning of a new Elizabethan age. For the first time ever there was full employment, economic growth and optimism. Young people were beginning to make their voices heard and Britain stood on the brink of change.

“I hope my book captures some of this although it’s important to add that not everything was wonderful. Women often didn’t have careers, getting a divorce was difficult and equal rights for gay people were non-existent.

“It’s important that we hear the voices of ordinary people. What the era was really like for them in their daily lives. And that is what I’ve set out to do.”

  • Your Anambra free education policy, a jamboree – APC youth mock Soludo

Your Anambra free education policy, a jamboree – APC youth mock Soludo

    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra State Chapter of the South East APC Young Progressives Forum has criticized Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s free education policy.

Convener of the group, Mr Pascal Candle in a press release said: “We have watched with dismay as the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo flagged off what he described as ‘free and qualitative education across all government owned nursery, primary and junior secondary school classes in Anambra State”.

“According to the governor, all fees, dues and levies running into several thousands hitherto being paid by students in these basic education classes have now been scrapped.

“We are therefore perplexed on how Governor Soludo will launch with fanfare a programme that is supposed to be existing since 2004.

“Let’s assume Governor Soludo met a practice on ground where students in primary 1-6 and JSS 1-3 that were not meant to pay any fees were made to pay illegal fees in violation of the UBE Act (as domesticated by Anambra State), why did it take him a year and 5 months to put a stop to it.

“Let us make it clear to Ndi Anambra, The official declaration of the purported free and qualitative education for students in nursery and basic classes (covering Primary 1 to JSS 3) and the attendant joy is not about “tuition fees” as this has long been made free by the previous administrations starting from Dr Chris NGIGE down to Governor Obiano.

“Before today and in spite of the tuition free regimes, a Primary school pupil in a public school in Anambra State pays 1,500 to 3,000 Naira per term depending on the school and location of the School.”

The group said there are items that are paid for in Anambra schools, despite the free education policy.

“This long list of these illegal levies totaling about 10 items covered such dues as; exam fee, portal fee, library fee etc.

“They asked if government would also provide books and pay for the PTA levies of the pupil.

“This is crucial because education is not just about going to school but having instructional materials to learn with. We are aware that most primary schools and many secondary schools in Anambra lack decent school libraries without adequate textbooks for the students to use.

“We therefore ask Governor Soludo to give specific answers to the SCOPE of the free basic education he reintroduced. This is for the sake of accountability and transparency.”

  • NAPTAN appeals for Ayade’s approval to set-up 267 Computer Labs for Schools in Cross River

    By Frank Ulom

The National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN has called on Governor Ben Ayade to grant the association the go-ahead to establish Computer Labs in all the 267 public secondary schools in Cross River State.

This was disclosed by Prof. Boniface Odey, State Chairman of NAPTAN on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, during a courtesy visit by Mr Castro Ezama, Special Adviser to Governor on Education in his office in Calabar.

Prof Odey said that if Governor Ayade gives the approval, which documents have already been sent to the Governor’s office, NAPTAN will build at least a 50-set Computer Lab in each of the 267 secondary schools across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

“We have all agreed that in each school in the 18 local government areas, parents will build one computer lab with at least 50 computers with generator, solar panel (to provide electricity), security and teachers. We are not using government teachers, we are going to use our own teachers that are computer literates – and in my record, we have 267 public secondary schools in Cross River State.

“We are not proposing for government to buy, we proposed that the government should approve it for us to establish one computer laboratory in each school. We have seen the challenges government is facing, from JSS 2 – SS 3, no computer in any school. With the Government carrying so much burden on its shoulders, it is not easy to provide it, so we now made a proposal to His Excellency to allow us to do it because it’s not our schools.

“Everybody is government, that is why we took up the project of fencing-round all schools in Cross River State – if you go to some schools now, the perimeter fencing is done by the PTA. Some schools you have been visiting, you have seen the many things we have done in the schools – and we are building additional classroom blocks in some schools too.

“The only problem we are having now is these computer training centres in our schools. We don’t have computers in any school and at the end of the day, SS 3 students will be coming out to write JAMB with computers – any moment from now, WAEC and NECO will start; and other examination bodies will start too but how do they write these exams? You can see what happened in this year’s JAMB. The low marks are because these children don’t have knowledge of how to operate a computer. How can they pass when they have not seen something they are being presented with in the examination hall before. This is why we came up with one proposal which we believe any moment from now the governor will approve. I believe His Excellency who knows the value of what we are saying will approve it so that we can go ahead with the project”, Odey said.

Earlier speaking, SA Ezama said the Cross River State Government is committed to delivering quality education to its citizens. He assured the NAPTAN Chairman that he will take the message to the Governor and promised that the approval for the Association to build Computer Labs across schools in the state will be granted in a short time.

“I want to thank you for the intervention in complementing the role of government, especially in the area of infrastructure in our respective schools – you have shown great leadership. In Cross River State, it is quality education and nothing less than that. His Excellency the digital Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade is committed to quality education and will leave no stone unturned until that is achieved. Incidentally, this is the only state in the country where we have a Professor as a governor, a Professor as a deputy governor”, Ezama stated.

He said that “recently, the world was agog with the beautiful edifice, the Teachers’ Continuous Training College located in Biase Local Government Area. That College when commissioned will take care of training and retraining our teachers to meet with the 21st century teaching where a lot of things will be x-rayed and our teachers will be better equipped to deliver”.

Ezama said his office will work with NAPTAN to organise a capacity workshop across the three senatorial districts of the state to address several issues including moral decadence among school children.

“We will work with you to ensure that we organise a capacity workshop with the theme, ‘The Role of Parents in Education of their Children.’ We will do this across the three senatorial districts, where parents will all be invited and we will drum it and come up with a bigger resolution to see how we can help our children”.

In his other response, the NAPTAN State Chairman, Prof. Odey commended Governor Ayade for addressing security issues, carrying out various projects and turning the state into an industrial hub. He said: “On our scoreboard, we have been interacting with other states. Cross River is not lagging behind. On our scoreboard, we can give Cross River State 75-80 per cent in the education sector. That’s a good mark for His Excellency and we pray that he will continue with that and improve on that till when he lives office and we all know what he has to leave behind as a Professor”, he said.

Odey further appealed that: “We need a CCTV camera – at least two in each school so that as you are coming in, you are seen immediately. We pray that the government would help us in this regard”.
