Manchester United have made a shocking move for the signature of a Newcastle United midfielder.
As the summer transfer window looms, the competition over one experienced Magpies midfielder ramps up.
With their historically poor performance in last year’s Premier League still hanging over Old Trafford, the Red Devils are itching to make any improvements they can before next season.
For Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, this has meant going on the hunt for talented players with youth on their side to secure a future of silverware.
During his quest for success, Amorim has also registered interest in the likes of Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and Olympiacos’ Charalampos Kostoulas.
But now, in a shocking move by United to further build on their future, Amorim has staked an interest in one Newcastle United midfielder.
According to Chronicle Live, Amorim’s United have turned their focus to Sean Longstaff, who has only a year left of his contract with the Magpies.
The 27 year-old midfielder has been at St. James’ Park since 2018, after scoring his first goal for the Magpies in their 2-0 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic in August 2018 and earning himself a 4-year contract with the club.
Nowadays, though, the Academy product has been bumped down the roster at Newcastle, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali taking his spot as top pick midfielders.
The first team at United may be where Longstaff will wish to see out the rest of his playing career, but other Premier League sides have also staked their interest in the accomplished Englishman.
It is also rumoured that Everton boss David Moyes has named Longstaff as one of their main targets for the summer.
With Carabao Cup victory now in Newcastle’s recent memory, after they overcame Liverpool in last Sunday’s final, Longstaff becomes a hot pick for any big European team.
Amorim will have to move quickly, then, if he is to secure Longstaff a place at Old Trafford.
