Newcastle United close to signing Burnley striker Chris Wood

Newcastle United are on the verge of signing their second player in the January transfer window, with Burnley striker Chris Wood set for a medical at the club after they agreed to pay his release clause of 20 million pounds.

Eddie Howe has been clear that he wanted a forward with proven Premier League experience to cover for Newcastle talisman Callum Wilson, who is ruled out for the coming weeks with a calf injury.

Whilst at Burnley, Wood has found himself in relegation scraps more often than not, and Howe will be hoping that his knowledge in this situation will be enough to keep the richest club in football afloat.

Wood looks set to join Kieran Trippier at the club, who moved to Newcastle earlier this month after opting to leave reigning LaLiga Santander champions Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle find their Botman alternative

Since the start of the current 2021/22 Premier League season, Newcastle have conceded 42 goals and sit 19th in the table.

One of the key areas of weakness has been in defence, and they have shown their desire to strengthen the area with the signing of Trippier.

Now the deal for Wood is nearing completion, they have already set their sights on Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile.

Badiashile is their new target at centre-back, as they have seemingly given up on securing the services of Lille star Sven Botman this winter.

Aged just 20, Badiashile has already played over 100 times for Monaco since making his debut in 2018, and Newcastle will be hoping that he is ready to make an instant impact if makes the move.

A new partner for Wood up front?

Signing Wood gives Howe what he is after, there is no denying it. However, the Newcastle manager looks to be in the market for another forward to give himself a number of options to choose from in the second half of the season.

The Magpies are reportedly interested in another Ligue 1 youth prospect in Reims striker Hugo Ekitike. The 6-foot-2 forward is 19 years old and could show the profile that Howe is looking for in a forward, as he is similar height to Wood.

Whilst it has been a relatively busy month so far at St James’ Park, there looks to be no sign of it slowing up any time soon before the deadline on January 31.
