A new Mortal Kombat game has been announced in celebration of the franchise’s 30-year anniversary, however, it might not be quite what fans were expecting.
Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios have revealed Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a new mobile collection role-playing game that is set to include a vast roster of familiar faces. This title is also set to feature the first mobile-exclusive cinematic story experience the Mortal Kombat series has ever seen.
In Onslaught, players will build a team of fighters and lead them into large real-time group battles to prevent a “dark and dangerous threat from wreaking havoc across the realms,” according to the game’s press release.
The upcoming mobile title was developed and co-published by NetherRealm Studios, and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught marks the franchise’s first mobile release since 2015’s Mortal Kombat Mobile — which has netted more than 150 million installs and remains one of the top five most downloaded games on mobile devices.
“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” said Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon. “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”
No set release date for the game has been revealed just yet, but Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is expected sometime in 2023. If you’d like to receive new information about this upcoming Mortal Kombat title, you can sign up over on the game’s official website for updates.
