New Mexico man gets 13 years for killing his brother

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (TCD) — A 33-year-old man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 13 years for the 2020 shooting death of his brother.

The Doña Ana County District Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing against Jaime Talamantes on Wednesday, March 29, after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to an initial press release from the Las Cruces Police Department, on Friday, May 22, 2020, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting on Mulberry Avenue. Police said they found the victim, Juni Talamantes, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, and he was transported to the Mountainview Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Upon further investigation, officials reportedly learned the victim and his brother, Jaime Talamantes, had gotten into an argument, and he shot his brother before fleeing the area.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by the Las Cruces Sun-News, at some point, investigators believe the argument escalated into a physical fight, and Jaime Talamantes got on top of his brother.

Before the shooting, the victim’s girlfriend reportedly split up the fight, and then Jaime Talamantes pulled out a gun and shot his brother.

Talamantes was arrested approximately three weeks later.
