Interest in Mason Greenwood keeps building so far this summer, with top European clubs interested in signing the 22-year-old.
The winger has already reportedly had interest from Getafe, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus, and now new reports are suggesting another top team is looking at the Englishman’s signature.
After his successful loan spell at Getafe, it looked like Greenwood would most likely be returning to the Spanish club, with Getafe wanting to retain their Player of the Season. However, it now appears that Getafe is turning from Greenwood and looking to his successor, with Real Madrid’s Arda Guler being their new target.
Borussia Dortmund have also claimed their interest, although admitted he would be a backup option if plans fell through. Dortmund are primarily looking at bringing their ex-star man, Jadon Sancho, back to the club, however, his excessive salary is providing an issue for the club. His €20 million gross annual wage is €6 million more per year than their current highest earner, Matt Hummels. Dortmund have expressed that if they can’t agree on a reduced salary with Sancho, then their attention would turn to his United teammate, Greenwood.
Next came interest from Italy, with Juventus beginning preliminary talks with United after Greenwood expressed to his agents that he’d be open to a move to Serie A.
Now, reports from The Sun are expressing that Turkish outfit Fenerbahce are looking to enter the race for Greenwood’s signature, with new manager Jose Mourinho at the helm hoping to help lure Greenwood to the club.
Mourinho managed Greenwood previously at United and was the manager who gave him his break, selecting the winger for the Red Devil’s pre-season tour of the United States in 2018 when Greenwood was just 16.
Former United player Nicky Butt expressed that the Portuguese manager saw potential in Greenwood when he was only 15, expecting him to become a future star.
The ex-United midfielder was working under Mourinho at the Red Devils’ academy between 2016 and 2018 and has recounted how Mourinho asked about the 15-year-old Greenwood, wanting him to train with the first team, however due to his age, he was still in school.
With Mounrinho’s previous admiration of Greenwood, it’s no surprise that a source has come out to say: “Fenerbahce are interested in Mason, They know he is a quality player and believe that having Mourinho as manager could be an attractive proposition for him.”
Despite this interest from Mourinho, it’s being reported that Greenwood does not reciprocate these feelings and isn’t keen on working under the Portuguese manager again.
Greenwood was featured on United’s retained list at the end of this season after his return from his loan at Getafe, however, he only has one year left on his contract which is due to expire in 2025. With only a year left, it’s expected that United want to cash in on the 22-year-old this summer rather than let him leave for free to a club at the end of his contract, with the Red Devils currently considering bids in around the £50 million mark for the English winger.
