Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Tuesday, visited the buffer zone inside Syria, following the Israeli army’s move into the area after the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Netanyahu, who has faced legal battles in recent days, was earlier rumoured to be heading to Cairo, Egypt, for Gaza ceasefire talks which will see Hamas release hostages captured during the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel.
He visited Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights to see the situation of things in the area, his office revealed in a statement.
“The prime minister has assessed the deployment of troops on the ground and set out rules for how to proceed,” they added.
The Israeli army had advanced into the buffer zone which is between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Syria after the overthrow of al-Assad’s government.
Though there have been huge criticisms of the move, Netanyahu described it as a temporary measure pending “a suitable arrangement.”
The PM was earlier rumoured to be travelling to Cairo for negotiations over a ceasefire deal but his spokesperson debunked the rumours, revealing his planned trip to Syria.
“Contrary to the wave of rumors, Prime Minister Netanyahu is not in Cairo,” the spokesperson said in a statement shared with The Hill by Israel’s Embassy in Washington.
US President, Joe Biden has in recent weeks, intensified efforts towards bringing to an end, the regional conflicts which Israel is involved in.
Last month, Biden alongside French President, Emmanuel Macron, brokered a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah forces.
