Rivers United claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory over Akwa United in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday five clash on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when Ndifreke Effiong, making his debut for Rivers United, scored the winning goal to secure all three points.
Effiong, a former Akwa United player, was one of three ex-Akwa United stars who played crucial roles in Rivers United’s win. Alongside Aniekeme Okon and Ubong Friday, Effiong, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, delivered a standout performance under the guidance of Rivers United head coach Finidi George.
Rivers United took the lead in the 31st minute when defender Stephen Manyo scored from a corner kick expertly delivered by Okon. Akwa United, determined to fight back, equalized early in the second half through substitute Friday Apollos, giving the visitors hope of taking a point.
