Natural Resources Key To Nigeria’s Industrial Future, Experts Say

Experts in the energy sector have emphasized the need for the Nigerian government and Africa to utilize their natural resources to effectively transition to clean energy.

The call was made at the 8th Energy Summit of Solewant Group, held in Alode Eleme, Rivers State.

Prof. Remigius Uche, Dean, School of Engineering Technology, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), presented a paper titled “Exploring Oil Sector Innovations for Energy Transition in Africa.”

He stated that Africa’s experience has shown that relying on fossil fuels has failed to address energy challenges, particularly in Nigeria.

He noted that despite having 125 billion barrels of oil reserves and 17.89 trillion standard cubic meters of gas, Africa’s per capita energy consumption is lower than the global average.

Prof. Uche emphasized the need for a robust sustainable development plan and the utilization of emerging and clean energy sources such as Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Carbon capture.

His Excellency Wendell De Landro, High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago to Nigeria, presented a paper titled “Unlocking Gas Potential as Catalyst for Energy Transition in Africa.” He criticized Nigeria’s continued gas flaring, citing his country’s success in utilizing gas for clean energy.

De Landro emphasized the need for Nigeria to build gas stations to reserve abundant gases and adopt clean energy. He also stated that the global north has exploited Africa’s resources, and Nigeria must stop gas flaring and exploration of fossil fuel.

The Group Managing Director of Solewant Group, Mr. Solomon Ewanehi, emphasized the summit’s focus on driving innovation, collaboration, and sustainability in Africa’s energy sector.

He highlighted the need for adaptable solutions that meet Africa’s unique energy demands while supporting global sustainability goals.
