“My final decision”: Arsenal striker commits his international future

On loan with RKC Waalwijk this season, Arsenal’s Mika Biereth is currently with the Denmark u21s over the international break.

Biereth made a cameo appearance for the u21 side off the bench in a friendly against Ukraine on Friday, and he’ll likely get another chance against Switzerland on Tuesday.

Yet Biereth had plenty of other options. Born in London, he could have represented England. With a half-German, half-Danish father, he could have chosen Germany. With a Bosnian mother, Bosnia and Herzegovina were also on the table.

The young centre-forward explained his decision in an interview with this week.

“I then decided to play for Denmark last summer, where I had a few sessions with the U19 national team, and now I am here in Turkey with the U21 national team,” Biereth said.

“I think it has something to do with my relationship with my father. He was the one who got me started in football in the first place.

“So it’s probably about making him and that side of the family proud.

“But for me it wasn’t like I wanted to play for Bosnia, Germany or England. I wasn’t drawn to them. So I feel I have made the right decision now.

“There is no chance of me changing it. This is my final decision.”

As mentioned, Biereth has been playing his club football with RKC Waalwijk this season in the Eredivisie.

But what looked like an exciting opportunity has been heavily disrupted by injuries so far. Biereth has only been fit to play 10 times so far, with each appearance lasting an average of 33 minutes.

The striker has a couple of goals and seems to be well-regarded with his loan side, but he needs to stay fit now.

The international break should help him get back sharp after his most recent setback earlier this month.
