After going dark for nearly a year, MultiVersus is gearing up to make its hopefully grand comeback soon, and the game looks a good bit different than the last time we got to play it.
During their weird crossover taking over an NHL game today, MultiVersus reveals what appears to be a brand new mechanic with parries coming to the platform fighter.
The first new gameplay clip shows Batman performing a combo on Finn before launching him into the air.
Finn attempts to counter attack, but Batman enters a new defensive stance with a “Parried” indicator appearing on screen.

The MVS social media account also featured a second short video featuring Superman on the ground holding his hand out and parrying Shaggy’s incoming attack.
It looks like this parry freezes Shaggy for a brief moment and allows Superman to get a full combo punish for a reward.
One of the larger complaints against the beta version of MultiVersus was its lack of defensive options for most characters since the game lacked a traditional block or shield button and pretty much just relied on dodges to avoid attacks.

Now, it seems like the developers are trying to rectify that with a parry that can be performed on the ground and in the air.
We don’t really know how the parry will be performed yet, but our best guess at the moment is it could take the spot of neutral dodges in the full game.
If that’s the case, MVS still probably isn’t getting a shield button like Super Smash Bros. though we’ll have to wait and see what’s all changing / being added.
Plus, we also have to see how parry interacts with multi-hit moves and projectiles or what happens when it fails to counter.
On top of the new mechanic, they’ve shown more gameplay of Wonder Woman with some new combo potential too that looks interesting.
Seriously, AGAIN?! This game is getting OUT OF HAND. Where’s the ref?! Oh, it’s Taz. That makes sense. #MultiVersus @NHL_On_TNT @BR_OpenIce pic.twitter.com/zDW9uh2svi

This also comes after the MultiVersus team released a developer blog post detailing how they’ve rebuilt the game’s rollback netcode from the ground up to hopefully provide a smoother playing and looking experience online.
MultiVersus is also promising new characters, stages, modes and more when it reaches its full release on May 28, and they’ll likely be showing much more of that in the coming days and weeks leading up to launch.
