The Open Beta for MultiVersus was made available last year. Shortly after the release of Marvin the Martian as a playable character, it would then be announced that the servers for the MultiVersus Open Beta were being shut down in June 2023.
As it turns out, the Open Beta provided the developers at Player1stGames with some insights on what needed changing and fixing for the game’s full launch. It’s been a good while since the MultiVersus Open Beta was shut down, but fans were promised that the game would be returning here in early 2024.
In preparation for the return of MultiVersus, there’s been plenty of teasing about the game. During this past weekend, the developers hinted at a special announcement for today at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET.
During the trailer that spanned for three minutes, it was revealed that MultiVersus would be officially launching on May 28, 2024. More announcements about the game will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
It was also stated that the developers have switched to working in Unreal Engine 5, which has applied improvements to the game’s visuals and character lighting. This is demonstrated well in the gameplay clips that are shown.
Though the roster was already looking impressive during the Open Beta period, Tony Huynh, Game Director for MultiVersus, has promised that there will be some new personalities introduced for the full game. Of course, MultiVersus is still stated to be a free-to-play game.
To further improve upon the online experience, Huynh declares that the team has been particularly busy with optimize the game’s netcode. This is likely to address the strange consistency issues that often occurred while playing online during the Open Beta.
“We’ve rebuilt the game from the ground up to support our new netcode to provide consistent world-class online play,” said Huynh. “So every hit, dodge, and Batarang will be delivered with pinpoint accuracy.”
“There will be consistent game performance, no matter what platform you’re playing on,” continued Huynh. “There will be new attacks and combat mechanics for each character, putting more skill expression in your hands.”
It was also revealed that the developers have created a new PVE (player versus enemy) mode for MultiVersus. Not too much was revealed about this new mode, so we’ll have to wait for more information regarding it.
Finally, a stage of “Townsville” and concept art for Dexter’s Laboratory were also shown in the trailer. This indicates that we’ll probably see character representation from The Powerpuff Girls and the Dexter’s Laboratory series from Cartoon Network at some point.
