Mozambique records highest new COVID-19 Infections since February

On Tuesday, the Mozambican health authorities announced yet another 45 new cases of Covid-19 respiratory illness. Since February, when 46 COVID-19 infections were reported, the current figure is the second largest number of new infections in single day.

The new cases comprise 27 women and 18 males, according to a Tuesday news release from the Ministry of Health. Further details show 44 of them were Mozambicans while one was a foreigner (the nationality of which was not specified). They ranged in age from six to sixty-six years old.

All of the new infections come from Mozambique’s southern region (1 in Inhambane, 21 in Maputo city, and 23 in Maputo province).

Since the pandemic began, 1,327,391 people have undergone Covid-19 testing in Mozambique with 623 of the tests happening in the last 24 hours. A total of 578 of these tests returned negative for Covid-19 while the 45 positive samples push the total confirmed Covid-19 cases count in Mozambique to 225,754.

On Tuesday, the coronavirus positivity rate (the proportion of individuals tested that were found to be infected) rose from 2.33 percent it was the previous day to 7.22 percent.

On Tuesday, the country’s Ministry of Health reported no fatalities, thus the overall Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique is steady at 2,203.

On Tuesday, a Maputo hospital discharged one Covid-19 patient, and three additional fresh infections were hospitalized (two in Gaza and one in Maputo). 

Also on Tuesday, the number of people in Covid-19 hospitals under medical treatment grew from four it was on Monday to six, with two in Matola, Gaza, and Maputo. Two of these patients were in critical care and were being given auxiliary oxygen.

The same Tuesday, there were 21 total recoveries from Covid-19 (one in Manica, four in Cabo Delgado, seven in Maputo city, and nine in Maputo province). The current total recoveries is 223,397. This accounts for 98.96 percent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.

Ongoing Covid-19 infections increased to 150 on Tuesday from 126 on Monday. The geographical dispersal of the active infections include: Sofala, one; Niassa, two; Nampula, three; Cabo Delgado, five; Inhambane, 5; Gaza. 19; Maputo city, 53; and Maputo province, 62. There were no active cases in Manica, Tete, and Zambezia currently have no active infections.

The Ministry of Health also announced that, during the previous 24 hours period, a total of 13,283 individuals received Covid-19 vaccines. A total of 14,230,189 Mozambicans have now received full vaccination (that is 93.6 percent of all citizens aged 18 and above).
