It’s an exciting day for Mortal Kombat 1 fans as NetherRealm Studios has released all new gameplay and Khaos Reigns story mode footage via the official Sektor gameplay trailer.
While fans have plenty to be hype about from story snippets to interesting new character and stage appearances, but the lion’s share of social media talk is honed in around Sektor’s Fatality. The kill sequence has some obvious references to Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man on top of being one of the coolest finishers in the game to date.
Try not to feel the weight of existential dread, but the first Iron Man film kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe some 16 years ago now in 2008. Though the character had been around for decades prior, Robert Downey Jr.’s incredibly charismatic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man rocketed the character to new levels of popularity with the general public.
Many shots in the film became instantly iconic, perhaps most so in the example of the “inside the suit” shot as we see Tony’s face as he interfaces with the suit while flying about. This surely wasn’t the first time such a shot was used in major cinema, but it’s by far the most memorable for audiences today.
Sektor is already an obvious choice for an Iron Man parallel as she’s a human in a red cybernetic suit who can fly and shoot projectiles. Indeed the comparison was obvious back when Mortal Kombat 1 was first emerging in 2023 as Kameo Sektor already moved and posed in ways that brought the Marvel character to mind:
Despite their ties to DC Comics through their parent company, Warner Bros. Games, and their ventures through two DC-themed Injustice fighting games, NetherRealm Studios clearly gives a notable nod to one of Marvel’s most prominent figures in this spectacular Fatality sequence:
congrats to sektor for having one of the best fatalities in the game
