It’s been a weird few weeks for Mortal Kombat 1 players, who now feel the future of the fighting game remains murky at best after the Khaos Reigns expansion.
A prominent leaker previously made a big claim that Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios had canceled MK1’s Kombat Pack 3 plans as well as a second story expansion, and it seems more may be backing them up, however, there still may be some room for hope.
Late last month, “verified insider” FateUnknown on Reddit posted that future content plans for Mortal Kombat beyond the Terminator’s T-1000 had been scrapped in part due to the low sales of Khaos Reigns.
Moreover, they came back for one last post claiming Kombat Pack 3 would have featured six characters including Jade, Cassie, Kung Jin, Sonya, Kano and one last guest before deleting their account due to these leaks garnering more attention than normal outside the MK community.
NetherRealm and WB have not officially responded or made any comments publicly around the leaks or rumors, but some others apparently are talking.
Respected Mortal Kombat data-miner and leaker Thethiny claims to have spoken to a couple more insiders, who made the whole ordeal a bit more interesting.
The fact that 2 verified insiders with 100% track record have different info makes me hopeful for KP3

Thethiny was seemingly left a bit hopeful that KP3 wasn’t canned after all since it appeared a second insider he has faith in had differing information.
It sounds like the info, however, wasn’t about the DLC still being on, but that their lineups for the characters didn’t match.
This raised some suspicion that WB/NRS gave differing messages or info to their workers or partners to try and track down where their leaks are coming from.
And then a few days ago, Thethiny was apparently in contact with a third supposed insider, who also had a different DLC list from the other two.
All of them, however, say that KP3 isn’t happening though there may be some more Kameo fighters coming who were already in the pipeline.
It’s Joever
The final insider has reached put and said that she also heard that there’s no more content after Terminator with a possibility of finishing what they originally had lined up since last year. Her KP3 list was also different.

If this was all some sort of wider ruse from the companies to root out who is leaking out their info early and from where, then it could mean that NRS could be continuing on with their original plan of supporting MK1 for more years to come after all.
That could potentially end up being the case, but it’s also pretty farfetched they’d go so far to put out negative rumors about themselves.
Even if the companies planted false info for leakers to share, it seems more likely they would have done so after actually canceling KP3 since a development that massive would be more likely to get out anyways (and then shore up their information for the future).
This could be partly why FateUnknown decided to erase their account and disappear, but that’ll probably remain… well, unknown for the time being.
And even though NRS hasn’t said anything about the future of MK1, things aren’t exactly looking good from what little we’ve been able to gleam either.
Series Co-creator Ed Boon shared some interesting social media posts last week where he seemed solemn and not writing like his usually cheery self online before going mostly quiet again.
Our sentiment is Kombat Pack 3 is more than likely done for unless NRS comes out and says otherwise at this point, which would be very unfortunate all around since that was definitely not the original plan for MK1.
But we’ll still have to wait to hear something from the developers themselves.
In the meantime, we recently discussed where we think the Mortal Kombat franchise should go after MK1 since Warner Bros. has been consistent in stating it remains one of their core franchises to focus on.
