Super Smash Bros. Ultimate completed its post-launch development with 86 fighters to choose from on the character select screen. Of course, fans all over the world still have plenty of ideas and hopes for future roster additions. Needless to say, we’ve already seen mods for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that make characters like Kamek and Funky Kong playable.
It would seem that Krystal from the Star Fox series is also a character that some people want to see playable. Though she’s not quite as relevant these days, she seemed like the obvious choice for a new Star Fox rep in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, the development team ended up going with Wolf instead, much to everyone’s surprise at the time.
Beefy Smash Doods recently released a video that has them testing out Krystal’s moveset. As expected, she has a unique playstyle due to her status as a two-handed staff user, which is something we haven’t seen in Super Smash Bros. thus far.
Of course, Krystal bears a number of similarities to Fox and Falco, but the Beefy Smash Doods describe her as being floatier than your typical “space animal.” Despite coming from a sci-fi series, Krystal functions more like a spellcaster.
Thanks to her staff, she boasts an incredible amount of reach with a number of her attacks. Not only that, but she has a run speed that’s pretty comparable to Fox’s, so she clearly has a lot going for her.
Krystal’s down special seems like a particularly potent attack since it’s capable of freezing opponents. By hitting someone near the ledge, they’ll effectively be put in an untechable situation, which will often lead to a stock’s loss.
Her neutral special is even slower than Wolf’s, but it packs a lot more power. Opponents will have to be careful when Krystal is setting up a shot since it is actually capable of scoring a knock out.
With all that said, Krystal’s recover seems particularly linear, even by space animal standards. This appears to be her biggest weakness.
