Super Smash Bros. Ultimate concluded its development of DLC with a whopping 86 fighters. Despite this, there’s no doubt that the community would be in favor of including even more characters.
It can be argued that the Donkey Kong Country series is painfully underrepresented since we only have Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and King K. Rool playable. While Dixie Kong may seem like the obvious choice, there are those that advocate for the inclusion of Funky Kong.
As it turns out, mRama, the modder behind that really cool playable Kamek mod for SSBU, created a mod that turns Funky Kong into a character. Though he does bear similarities to Donkey Kong, much of what he does is completely unique to him.
First off, it should be mentioned that only Donkey Kong gets the Cargo Throw. Funky Kong loses out on one of the Donkey Kong’s best tools, but gets some new stuff to compensate.
Funky Kong’s down aerial is especially cool looking as it allows him to bounce off the opponent while dealing them damage and knockback. This can be done up to three times while airborne. After that, the surfboard will no longer provide that bounce effect.
His back aerial boasts an amazing amount of reach and kill power as Funky Kong actually swings a surfboard with this attack. If this were a real character, there’s no doubt that this would be an oppressive tool in Funky Kong’s kit due to how quickly it controls space.
Compared to Donkey Kong, Funky’s recovery options are astoundingly good. Using just Funky Kong’s side special (which apparently doesn’t even put him in freefall afterwards), he’s able to fly under the second part of the training stage and grab the other ledge.
Funky Kong even gets a projectile attack, which effectively has him shooting Donkey Kong’s Coconut Shooter from Donkey Kong 64, though it fires out a boot instead. With this, Funky Kong can hit opponents from extremely far distances, depending on how long it’s charged for.
little showcase of my progress on Funky Kong’s moveset!
I’m planning on having a beta release of his moveset on my kofi next weekend, so be sure to support me to get in on the testing! pic.twitter.com/oOr8Rvqe9o
