| Phone thief beaten to death in Calabar |

CALABAR – An alleged notorious handset snatcher, identified as Offiong, has been hacked to death by an angry mob on Saturday night at Ekpo Abasi community in Calabar – South Local Government of Cross River State.
Our Correspondents who visited the scene of the incident gathered that the handset snatcher, who was identified as a member of a notorious gang specialised in pickpocketing and dispossessing victims of valuables, was caught in the very act at the popular Ekpo Abasi Junction, University Of Cross River State, UNICROSS roundabout in the locality while attacking a victim .
It was learnt that Offiong had forcefully tried to attack his pose victim with a knife while with the aim of dispossessing him of his mobile phone. As the struggle persisted, the victim raised an alarm calling for help and some male residents from the area rushed to the rescue.
In the process Offiong was overpowered, beaten and stabbed severally. However Offiong reportedly managed to escape from the scene with multiple injuries and raced towards the nearby UNICROSS roundabout where he fell down, he was tied, with a thick rope, beaten with tyres around his neck. Offiong later gave up the ghost due to loss of blood.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Cross River State Command, DSP Irene Ugbor said she was not aware of the incident.
According to her ” I am not aware, nobody has reported anything like that to us “.
