It’s a bit wild to think that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is just a few months away from celebrating its sixth birthday, and despite not getting any more balance updates in almost three years, the competitive scene has continued to evolve and change.
Luminosity Gaming recently brought together some of the best to ever play the game with MkLeo, Maister, Sonix, Tweek and Marss to craft a combined tier list for Smash Ultimate with a bit of a twist.
Instead of bringing everyone into a room or call and making them debate about individual picks for all 80+ characters, the seasoned pros with more major wins between them than we can count first each had to make their own tiers.
After ranking each fighter on a scale of 1–10 with some defined parameters as to what those numbers mean, their placements are combined together to produce an average score for a full list.
We get to see some clips of the initial process where there’s notable differences in opinion out the gate with MkLeo rating Captain Falcon as a 6 while Tweek goes with 5, Maister at 3, Marss at 5 and Sonix at 7.
The top competitors must then select their top 5 overall to factor into the final results.
At the peak of S+ tier, you probably won’t be surprised to see Steve at number one although now Sonic is right up there now too in the pros’ fused vision of the current state of the game.
Overall, there’s 18 characters placed somewhere within that S category like Kazuya, Snake and R.O.B., but also Palutena and Lucina.
As for some of other the mains / secondaries the group has used over the years, there’s Sephiroth in B-, Joker as well as Mr. Game & Watch in S, Byleth in C+, and Zero Suit Samus in B+.
The D and E categories at the bottom have 15 characters bringing up the rear, and you can probably guess most of them though maybe not all.
Once the list was completed, each player has a segment breaking down what they think of the overall rankings, so we can see more on what they agree with and why the others are wrong.
You can check out the completed combined tier list for MkLeo, Marss, Maister, Tweek and Sonix below along with the video going much further into the process and their own thoughts.
