Dark Phoenix is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe, and when it came time to implement her into Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it caused one former Capcom staff member to say she “made my mind melt.”

The regular version of Phoenix was a strong character in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but building up 5 bars of super meter and getting knocked out would cause Dark Phoenix to rise up in her place.

Doing insane damage, spawning multiple projectiles with the single touch of a button and so much more, this was a common character to find in tournaments and online during the initial release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 back in February of 2011. With the updated version in Ultimate, some 9 months later, Phoenix would see numerous nerfs, but still retain a number of things that made her a nightmare to handle.

In a universe with characters like Thanos and Galactus, Dark Phoenix is also known as one of the most powerful entities around. Jean Grey, who’s already a strong telepathic and telekinetic mutant, is hit by radiation from a solar flare.

After that, she starts sporting a new costume and calling herself “Phoenix” and becomes tremendously more powerful. A rough event transpires leading to her unlocking more of the power and start referring to herself as Dark Phoenix.

This is the concept Capcom was working with when they decided to implement the character. If she would have been a cookie cutter archetype we’d seen before, she probably wouldn’t have taken off as a popular character in the Marvel series. Instead, the developers went to lengths we’d never seen before in a Capcom fighting game and created one of the most insane fighters we’ve ever seen.

Dark Phoenix could unleash two projectiles which tracked the opponent when they moved about the screen, and before she landed, she could send off a second set of these fireballs for a total of four on screen at once. Think Shin Akuma’s double air fireball, but way more powerful. Nearly every button Dark Phoenix hit would spawn more projectiles.

Throw in the ability to fly, teleport, massive damage, great speed, a healing field and a full-screen invincible projectile super and you start to get an idea of what this character was capable of. However, to offset these massive advantages, there were many ways opponents could remove some of the 5 bars required to attain Dark Phoenix, and both versions of Phoenix — Dark and Regular — had hands down the lowest health in the game meaning just a single combo could wipe them out in seconds.

Dark Phoenix’s health would also…
