Miami Open: World Number One Sabalenka Wins Second Trophy Of The Year

World number one Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula 7-5 6-2 to win the 2025 Miami Open final, her second title of the year.

The Belarusian showed her quality to recover from a 3-2 deficit in the first set to lead her on course for the victory.

Pegula also leveled from a 5-2 deficit after Sabalenka faltered in her serve to ensure a tough finish in the encounter.

The World number one won four games in a row with a final backhand to win the trophy. She did not drop a set throughout the entire tournament

It was her second trophy of the year after winning the Brisbane International in January.

She suffered defeats in her last two finals at the Australian Open, and at Indian Wells two weeks ago.

Sabalenka admitted that the match was tough, while expressing her delight to finally end her losing runs.

She said: “I’m speechless. The last couple of finals were really tough and tight and close ones for me, so going into this one I was so focused on myself.

“I was super focused and playing point by point. It feels super special and really happy with the title – the first in Miami.

“It was back and forth the whole match. I was fighting no matter what and, even after each game she broke, I was fighting back and breaking her back.

“We are working a lot on the variety of my game and against her, it is important to mix the heights of the ball. I’m happy it worked and I’m happy with the title.”

The victory earned Sabalenka a prize money of $1,124,380 to take her earnings up to ninth in the all-time list of prize money winners in women’s tennis, leaping above Angelique Kerber.

Sabalenka is now behind Iga Swiatek in the all-time prize money chart with $33,643,560.
